I'm a luthier trained in the nitrocellulose lacquer school, but since I'm making a lot of classical guitars now, I think that it's more than time to try to french polish these guitars, and maybe (why not?) the other steel string guitars I also made. I'll definitely give them a try. Thanks again, you're such a good teacher.

Hello Pablo, first I want to say that your work is amassing, and so inspiring. I got from you the "courage" to take a shot and try to build my first guitar. I have order based on some words you say in one of you video, a classical guitar kit from Maderas Barber... now I wait for the order to come. I'm not completely stranger to wood working, is been one of my main hobby, I build small boxes for my friends, cigars boxes or jewellery. Always use only natural materials and I build them completely manually, no power tools involved except for drilling holes when needed.

@redkitekk
@redkitekk 5 лет назад

Thankyou for the videos, I am definetly getting better at polishing now :) For taping off for the bridge, I tape 1mm less from bridge edges then remove the built up shellac carefully. Is this how you do it? Or do you have a better way?
@redkitekk
@redkitekk 5 лет назад
Lewis D. Lancaster what I do is to put tape on the area where the bridge will go and then work out the position of the bridge on top of the tape and remove the excess tape cutting with a very sharp scalpel around the bridge so that the tape left behind covers just the exact area of the bridge, once the guitar is polished I remove the tape and glue on the bridge in place.
@LewisDLancaster
@LewisDLancaster 5 лет назад
PabloRequena 👍🏻 ok, so the tape is exactly the same size as the bridge and you don‘t remove any shellac that has built up at the edge of the tape. I think I may have been using too many layers of tape, so the build up on the edge of the tape was too high. I will try exact tape size and only one layer next time. Thankyou very much!

I don’t think shellac is the best finish to achieve a Matt finish as you will always get a bit of shine. You can have a semy gloss finish which you can get by not going too far with the last glossing part of the process.

It could be a number of things, you could be loading the rubber too much too often, you could work the polish for longer without reloading and do less sessions. It could also be that you are nor using enough oil. Wait 24 hours in between sessions.

Hi! I have a question. I have followed your very instructive video series about French polishing. Everything has worked just fine until the last two steps: spiriting of and using a silicon free polish compound. The top and back looks very fine but the sides were left with milky white spots in different sizes. They appeared “magically” during this last step and seems to be inside the shellac rather than on the surface. I have tried to sand down a bit and the spots seams too go quite deep in the shellac. Before I try to build up new layers of shellac I wonder if you have any suggestions too what I have done wrong so that I can do it right this time around. I would much appreciate your advice and thank you for your fantastic videos om RU-vid. When the time is right I hope to join one of your classes one day. /Mathias
@redkitekk
@redkitekk 4 года назад
Mathias de Mare it is difficult to know the reason why but it sounds like if the polishing compound has reacted with the shellac on the sides, perhaps the polish was thinner there.... difficult to know but I think you would probably have to cut back all the way down to the wood and polish the sides again. Sorry not to be able to be more helpful.

Mohamed Aba Yazeed 1500 is a good starting point. You can afterwards use a few different grits up to 3000

Hello Pablo, as you can see in my previous message, I will soon start build my own first guitar. I have a short question to you and it will be very kind of you to give some opinion. I see other luthiers applying shellac inside guitar also... some other, including you, left the wood bare and not protected what so ever. Please give us some insights on the subject, from your point of view. Is this affecting the sound... is good or not advisable to doit...etc. thanks allot for all you wonderful videos.

Razvan Butiac this is just a personal choice. My guess is that when people polish inside they are trying to minimize the absorption of humidity from the air to keep the wood more stable but I personally feel that this isn’t necessary. Also, if for any reason you have to fix a crack in the future, having polish inside will interfere with gluing internal reinforcements.

Hi Pablo, my respect, I didn't notice how you finished the fingerboard, do you use something for it too?
@redkitekk

Some polishes contain silicon compounds. I've read that if silicon gets into a guitar's timber, then future refinishing can be compromised by "fisheye" blemishes. Should this be considered in using car polish on guitars?
@redkitekk
@redkitekk 5 лет назад
Richard Christie, sure, try to find one free of silicon, but also, before you re polish it is always a good idea to cut back the surfaces to remove anything that is not shellac.

Hi Pablo I finished my guitar a year ago maybe a little longer. I was transporting it with my other guitars I had them in my case. I don't know if it got too hot or what but on the back of the Rosewood finish the case left several marks. How do I remove these marks? Slightly send and go back to shellac and oil, I cut back on my shellac to the finishing stage? They're not really deep but it's enough to bother me after working so much on this guitar. And it came out so nice.

Harry Odum when you polished your guitar, did you by the shellac already mixed with alcohol or did you mixed it yourself?
@harryodum5598
@harryodum5598 3 года назад
@@redkitekk I made it myself. Mycase had a soft like felt on the bottom . Everything else looks fantastic I don't know what happened but it put a few marks on it. I've had so many comments about how nice it looks. I was in Florida and it's been really hot. It's not really bad but you can feel the marks on it.

@@redkitekk I don't know if I should send it with an 18 hundred paper or a 2000 and then go back to a 2-pound cut with oil and start from the beginning. What you said in your videos the back was really easy to do. It shouldn't take a whole lot to bring the shine back I wouldn't think. What do you think? But the guitar looks like it has a coat of glass on it. The guitar has been in this case since I finished polishing it, just can't figure out what happened unless it was the Heat I had it in the back of my van put the other equipment and it didn't hurt anything else but that special guitar it came out so beautiful.
@redkitekk
@redkitekk 3 года назад
Harry Odum yes, you can cut the damaged areas with 1500 o 2000 sandpaper and then polish it again. It would be a good idea not to put it in the case too soon after the polish is done as it can take a few weeks to dry fully and perhaps that was part of the problem.
@harryodum5598

@@redkitekk well thank you Pablo it won't take much to finish the back. I'll send it back go back to a 2-pound cut whatever it takes back to square one and not use that case anymore. I'm glad it's just the back the soundboard would be a bad situation with the bridge already attached but it looks great so no problems there thank you again Pablo for responding to my question so quickly..
