I learned how to fry scream when I was practicing villain voices for Zelda breath of the wild because I was bored, so I've randomly learned how to do it.
@@QuelTipoSulTubo well maybe more like gutterals, I've learned how to do lows through Zelda, if you got insta or something I can message you on, I can send you an audio file of some of my more recent vocals, of course they still need a hell ton more conditioning and practice but I think I'm doing pretty well with em if you wanna hear
@@montantafunk2153 I'm glad my parents encourage me to find music instead of pushing some away, but follow your dreams! One part of life you dread to deal with is childhood, keep on.
you know i dont get the whole point in why parents dont want there kids to scream i mean if they want to become in a band then by all means support them dont be a prick about it am i right??
@@ZNX05 First of all, you have to admit that metal has satanic traits to it, and second, no parents would like their son to be in a band as a career because it is very risky
@@xxprogamerxx7770 very true. I'd say doing it as a hobby is the best unless you're thinking 24/7 of music and in that case you'd practice hours and hours every day.
as a mixer and producer i find very funny how silly screams can sound on their own, but add a blast beat and some distorted guitars and it suddenly sounds badass
Yo, the 'inhale then the abrupt hold your breath' step to close your vocal chords and the 'get punched in the stomach by an oompa-loompa man' while holding your breath with you demonstrating, might have actually made it click in my brain. Now to make it louder.
Be careful. This is a method of glottal compression screaming that can put you at a higher risk of grinding your vocal folds together for distortion. If you want this sound with less chance of losing your voice, here is a way to do this scream that takes a while but helps you develop your clean and gritty singing simultaneously. It will also help you with pitched screams, which is basically singing with grit, except the distortion outweighs the voice (think Linkin Park or Architects). I learned this from the overpriced yet informative KTVA course. STEPS 1. Strong clean chest note (remember to use your diaphragm!) 2. Compress (diaphragmatic) 3. Learn how to use glottal compression 4. Use diaphragmatic AND glottal compression at the same time for maximum volume and sustain with minimum effort 5. For your first month, develop a clean tone 6. Slowly "crank the gain" each month by increasing diaphragmatic compression 7. Once you reach the desired amount of distortion without pain, you can learn to make it voiceless (get the distortion without the true vocal folds phonating) And just like that, you have this scream, while adding other techniques to your arsenal along the way! This could take 2-8 months depending on how much distortion you want in your scream, and if you want it pitched or voiceless. Remember to do practice in 2-10 minutes blocks, do vocal checks, and drink room temperature filtered water

@@metaltubersakarimashiba5513 I'm not expert and I'm learning myself but from my research my understanding is it's because you have to condition the muscles like working out when you start you can only do so many reps as you condition you can start to exceed previous limitations
2:07 the moment when I realize I've been doing it correctly before... Thanks this whole time I thought I was just gargling phlegm and not doing an actual fry, this confirmed it for me so now I can finally make better progress! You're awesome riffshop
Hey, could you explain how you do the gargling noise? It still sounds kinda like a vocal fry but more "wet", what is the actual difference in making this particular sound? When I try to do as the video says I end up just doing vocal fry again.
@@MishiaEatingUnicorn honestly I still think the "wetness" of a fry scream is created by phlegm/spit, but it's very different from gargling phlegm or spit. If your issue is that you keep going into regular vocal fry, all I can really say is practice and maybe move a little "higher up" in your vocal chords if that makes sense. I actually started learning to scream from Andy Cizek's video which is a great video to get you started, I mean like my comment implies this video came a bit after I started learning to scream, but anyhow, like Andy Cizek says, to create a fry scream you want to just try and add air to a vocal fry sound. It'll sound really weak at first but the more you practice it (even if it's not with the intent of practicing and youre kinda just screaming for fun) it'll start sounding heavier. It also might not sound that good when you're just screaming to yourself, so I'd highly suggest you record your practice to make note of progress and I guarantee you'll be surprised by how good it actually sounds with some time, also a good practice imo to just record covers of some of your favorite songs/songs you know just for fun and to hear your progress. If you want more details or more specifics I'd be glad to help on discord and I could send you some audio file examples, etc. Keep in mind though we're both beginners here, I started my journey roughly a month ago and I'm pretty proud of the progress I've made, I might even release some covers on yt in a couple months, and I'm sure you'll be able to as well!
@@zenyros I gotta be honest, every single tutorial that said to just add air/power to a vocal fry didn't work for me, no matter how engaged my diaphragm was or how much air i pushed through. If I remember correctly, David says the method requires full vocal fold closure, which vocal fry is close, but not quite there, which is why he said to start off by acting like you're about to get hit, which engages your diaphragm more than vocal fry does. That tip alone is what helped me achieve fry screams. I can only enunciate with mid screams, but with some experimentation I can figure out highs and lows too, all because of that one tip. I've been false chord screaming for 7 years and singing, including the utilization of vocal compression (like M. Shadows from A7X), for two and a half, but fry screams were so close but so far. I won't say vocal fry has no place in music, because even in some of my songs I use it, although very sparingly, but it definitely isn't a great starting point for fry screaming outside of learning how to compress your vocal folds in a certain manner. Sorry if I come across as talking shit to you or Andy, been up waaay too long. Mad respect for taking the time to find your fry scream!
@@MarksmanFromHell Oh yea nah, in fact I think it's a much too common misconception for people to start out with fry screams than false chord, which in my opinion false chord is much more natural to go into and it only took about 2 days of practice to get the hang of it, versus probably like 3 weeks of learning to fry scream. After I practiced false chord it also felt harder doing fry screams because I kept accidentally going into false chord. In any case, I personally prefer the sound of fry screams over false chords just because it feels more "emotional" to me, especially because you can hold fry screams for substantially longer than you can false chords. But yeah don't worry this didn't come off as offensive at all, literally just you stating your point of view/personal experiences which I very much appreciate!
You can do it. I started about 10 months ago, and I'm finally to a point where I'm no longer embarrassed by my frys. The journey is hard, it takes dedication, and you're going to feel like giving up often. Especially in the beginning. But trust me you can get there.
I just got my first legitimate fry scream this evening. The past few months I’ve taken up vocal lessons and finally got myself to engage that nasty, brutal, yet simple voice. Cheers, thanks for the video, I’ve learned more from you in this vidja than I thought I would. Again, thank you.
I learned how to fry scream while arguin eith my mom when i was 14. I was already learning how to fry scream but I just easnt pulling it off. One time my mom got me so mad that a screamed full firce and felt everything that people have been teing me I should and it sounded half decent. Have practiced since and my scream is ok.
In the past I've looked up countless tutorials on how to scream and none of them worked except for this one. This was the video that got my first scream out and now I've been doing it for several months or even up to a year now and it is so much fun. Thank you a lot for this, this was the best explanation I could find on RU-vid!
Thank you for saying vocal fry is not the basis of fry scream!! I knew this somewhat because it simply does not translate into a fry scream, but hearing someone else say it I feel validated
Holy shit, this guy is just officially starting at about a minute and a half in... but that ENTIRE minute and a half was informational. I literally thought that was the lesson because it just seemed like such useful information. This guy definitely knows what he’s talking about.
Bro I have been dabbling in trying to learn fry scream for like 2 years, and I could never get it down. After watching this I realized I was doing it completely wrong, and this vid helped me figure it out. Been practicing everyday for about a week and I'm getting the sound down much better. Thank you so much for making this vid.
I THINK I GOT IT! Thank you so much! I was always trying to ampliy vocal fry. I've been working on all sorts of vocal distortion for 4 years now. I think I finally got the Fry Scream down. THANK YOU! Cheers from Germany \m/
Thank you so much David, with your Free Screaming Crash Course i can now use Fry Scream in just 3 Weeks by practicing atleast 4 hours a day 🔥🔥🤟🏻 😊 i'm a Filipino Citizen 🇵🇭🇵🇭🇵🇭
BRUHHH you are amazing! I’ve been going through RU-vid for YEARS trying to start learning how to fry scream. Yours is the ONLY method that has worked even a little bit for me. THANK YOUUUUUU
Literally just unlocked my fry scream while driving down the road. Went thru all your emails an videos an have been playing around. An I just unlocked. Thank you so much. Now I wanna go deeper into your programs.
With many vocal technique videos on RU-vid, vocalists will tell you "do this" and not explain how to, nor what's physically happening when using a certain technique. This video explained everything perfectly. Thanks! 😊
You were the first one to succeed in making me understand how to produce this technique. I had the biggest revelation about this technique thanks to you! Thank you so much.
So crazy, there are now tutorials for everything. When I was learning how to make music, you just had to wing it and see what happens. I feel happy for kids today to have all this knowledge at the click of a button.
Hey man, i know what i can do physically (tactile), but to have clear distinction between fry and false chord screams with anatomical description, both taught me how i do what i can now, and how limited my range and understanding had been taking me. Thank you and i hope you make more instructive videos!
I signed up for those 4 videos like a month ago? And today I can’t believe I actually nailed the fry scream!!!! Still needs improvement but I actually managed to do it!!! So THANK YOU!!!!
Started learning with my growls, and they came so naturally. Gutturals and growls were easy but the screams are completely different for me. This video is great and explains how to start in an amazing way. Wish more people could see this because it stopped me in my tracks on some key misconceptions that I've had. Thank you for the video and I can't wait for more of your work!
Best tutorial on this. Unlike others you actually contextualise the process. So many other tutors talk about this technique like you can just do it, asif it's like flicking a switch, asif it's totally normal and easy as pie.
Hardly anyone covers the fact that not all techniques work the same across different people. I'm glad you covered it because that fact can lead people down a path of damaging their voice if they don't know this.
first and foremost.. that thumbnail tho.. ME: ( started trying couple of times ) MySis: oi! are you losing your shite again or something? Clock: 4:05 am hahaha
Didn't need the tutorial, but wanted to hear what you had to say. very well put. Keep doing these, I promise more people than you realize will find use of them.
I have a dog and he growls with a very low pitch sometimes and it's scary if you wake up to it. If you try to make that low pitch growl, then I believe you're one step closer. Remember, the sound needs to feel like it's from the top of the mouth and not from the throat. One way I check is to see if I'm doing it right is if I put my lips together (but not closed - similar to whistling) and the lips feel like they vibrate, and that the air I blow out stutters like a tremolo effect (or talking to a fan). The other comments about the gargling flem also work. With this method, it helps give you the feeling and you can start to control the frequency yourself instead of what other people say (you'll be able to increase the force as you progress...). I felt that there was a range (from around the middle of the mouth to back) where the effect could be created. Further forward gave a deeper rumble while further back gave a coarse, more wet sound. Like he said, everyone is different and so this may not work for you. An example is that gargling and growling are really easily for me, but I couldn't get my head around what other people told me from other videos. No matter how many times I tried (I was also scared of damaging my vocals). While all tutorials are consistent with the fundamentals and what not to do, what tutorials lack are the 'uniqueness' should I say - different methods or techniques to practice. This tutorial was important for me as he talked about a wet sound and a kinda gargling sound. From the comments, I can see that many people have already got a feeling, but just haven't realised that they're already half way there...
best explanation man, i've been real half assed with wanting to learn how to fry scream and literally nailed it thanks to your guidance, throat still intact hahahaha cheers dude :)
Can somebody tell me another way to do a correct fry distortion? I've watched and tried this video since like a month ago and haven't configured nor did fry scream / distortion correctly (i stopped whenever my throat felt abnormal). I can do low guttural scream but sucks at fry or high screams. Thanks.
I’m a natural diaphragm breather, I thought that when I was breathing with my stomach it’s wrong. I didn’t see anyone do that, but now I know. Because I’m destined vocalist. 😂
Thank you! Ive been playing with different screams for over a decade now but this anatomical distinction was a lightbulb moment for me. Now i know how it should feel to do it without damaging my chords
I've been struggling for a year or more. The past you mentioned about the tension kinda helps. I can do a really soft fry. It's distorted, but there's no power. Whenever I try to push through with my diaphragm, I choke. I notice I have no voice what so ever in my fry s̶c̶r̶e̶ whispers lol But that starting point you made, where when you get to that point, make that louder. That's where I should've started. You have more voice in yours, I have none. It's the voice I was missing. Thank you.
Got it by 1:40. Not that I started my youtube journey looking at how to scream let alone a subset of screaming. I spent a lot of time as a child making stupid noises haha.
My fry scream sounds more like a voice with heavy ass rasp, even though it's not a "full" scream, I like it, it fells like something different that I have for myself
Should a whisper be introduced while conducting a fry scream, and if so, how is it possible that the vocal folds are completely closed? Im confused because most vocal coaches say they should be 100% closed, but whenever i watch a tutorial on how its done, it sounds like a whisper mixed with fry.
I'm slowly but surely getting better, before I was just gargling spit in my throat, now that's not happening anymore, thank you for this tutorial, very helpful!!!
THANK YOU for doing a tutorial that actually says how it works. I remember when I was trying to learn how to do a fry scream from yt tutorials that "taught" that this "weak vocal fry" is the basis for the actual fry scream, wasting my time and effort to get there. For any other folk that want to figure out fry screams: what I'd suggest is that you go to a gig (after this whole thing ends ofc) of a band that you know has a vocalist who does fry screams. It's a whole different thing when you actually hear this technique being used live. And while you're there, try to mimic what you hear with all those things that you've heard being said in this video in mind. And one small tip from me: fry scream kinda feels as if you were inhaling air, altho you're actually exhaling it. I know it doesn't make much sense now,but it's also a tip that helped me back then when I got some first screams but was still struggling to make them more firm. That's just how the airflow works with this technique
Is exhaling that air supposed to male you feel dry??? 🤨🤨🤨 I feel dry after I attempt the tuturial but I always make sure to well hydrate while I do it 😅😅😅
I can do that since I was 9 years old I'm 13 now i practiced for years even though my parents hated it because I was going through puberty but I can do it easily when I was 9 and even now :)
I struggled for a while to figure it out, but I recently got it while yelling at traffic lol. Yelling cues me into how to use my diaphragm properly and build support. Was trying to get the sound from way too high in my throat. Great guide and the mechanics are fascinating!!🤘🏻🗣
just found this after a few years of teaching myself how to scream, biggest advice I can give to people struggling is to branch out and listen to a lot of different artists! I grew up listening to Linkin Park (rest in peace Chester) and his screams were absolutely impossible for me to emulate until I found some very different screamers, like Keith Buckley of ETID. Trying to make yourself scream like other artists obviously isn't the goal, but it helped me to recognize the positioning and tension in my vocal cords, which gives me steps to practice on.
2:15 It seems to me that it wil hurt if i do it for a long period. It kinda "scratches" my vocal cords. I believe it shouldn't hurt anything, usually when something hurts, we're doing it wrong. What should I do to correct it?
I had the basics at first and my fry scream wasn't bad but it wasn't good, I was missing one thing, and it showed me how to fix that in this video, now I have a decent fry scream. Thank you so much.
Dude I watched this vid two years ago on a dif account and couldn’t find you on my original account, until now, thank youuuu soooooo sooooo much, I learned vocal fry in less than a month thanks to you 🤩🤩🤩🤩
I have unlocked my false chords and have pretty decent versatility in my mids and lows, but high and fry screams have evaded me for the six years I've been doing vocals. I'll try this technique and see how it works! Many thanks!
Ok this was super helpful! As a beatbox inthusiast who can do throat base (or kargyraa throat singing) this feels very similar just with pressure behind it and diffrent air usage. Like denser in a way. Thank you for the great expleneation!
When I practiced screaming and singing with grit my clean vocals also got better especially my high range. I think it has to do with the increased diaphragmatic support that you need to do metal vocals without hurting yourself.
@@anafigueroa-carrillo2721 actually I'm pretty sure she does fry but she practiced and experimented very low and powerful fry screams and that's very hard to do for most women that's why she's so unique
@@nemesyssss No, she definitely does a false cord with slam tendencies. A fry wouldn’t be able to achieve the full sound that a fry scream does. The most I’ve seen of that being done is Alissa White-Gluz. Tatiana is definitely very unique but she is a false cord vocalist.
awesome video! I’m a metal head who’s been distorted vocal curious. I’ve been cautious to not damage my vocal folds. I accidentally discovered false fold vocals but haven’t quite figured out fry. I’ll give these tips a try! Thank you!
I’m like 8-14 days into fry scream training. And I think I’m finally getting it! Now I’m tryna teach myself to say words in gutterals lol (yes for anyone wondering I did watch the gutteral video)
you might benefit from doing some "vocal coach" breakdown style videos. explain what different techniques other metal singers are using, and then react- because entertainment.
