How to fully check your tv power supply on a dead television set

I will show you how to check your televisions power supply board on a dead tv set. This is a sony lcd tv KDL-40BX421. We have no standby light led on front of the TV, no picture or sound, and no Back Lite. The very first thing to do is check for our standby voltage (DC volts) using your multi-meter. If you do not have any standby voltage on any of the pins on the plug going to the mainboard from the Power supply; then most likely you have a bad mainboard. If you do have 3-5 volts standby then there are a few more check you need to make before you rule out the power supply completely. You have to jump the POWER ON or PS ON pin to the active standby voltage and see if the power supply board attempts to come on by simultaniously checking voltage on another line. For example, the 12v or 24v line. If those voltage(s) still do not come up then you definitely have a bad power supply board. If any of them do then we can assume that the main board is bad.
NOTE: THIS PARTICULAR TV HAS AN "AC OFF DET" LINE. IF YOU HAVE A DIFFERENT TV WITH NO "AC DET" LINE. JUST MAKE SURE THAT YOU HAVE STANDBY VOLTAGE!

Thanks so much for this video. I had no idea you needed to provide 3.5v to the power on to turn on the other power pins. Did this on my 46ld550 LG TV power supply and got 20v and 12v pins to turn on. Thought I had a bad power supply before. Now looking in the right place.

I'm working on a Vizio with 3D, no standby voltage and the 12 volt supply is reading 19. Found one for 15 bucks, so I spent the day going over the board, curiosity got me, I made up a 40w light bulb to discharge the main caps, I prefer to remain alive. Does anyone go down to component level? I think I know what the components are but not sure on some. I tried to go backwards on the 3.3 volt supply, caps are dead, no power coming out of what looks like the 3.3 volt transformer. Nothing going in the other side. Controlled by an IC, I stopped there. I tried goggling the number on the IC nothing. For 15 bucks you may ask why, I just want to know what makes it tick.

Hi thanks for your great job you do. About AC off detect what voltage should be there? And why AC bcz board needs dc? What that signal does as a result of that signal or what happens when there is no signal like symptoms and .. Thanks.

Very useful video.But I need more theoretical information about the main board voltage to activate the power supply. I have a TV that was out of service by a lightning. I checked the power supply and there is not an stand by voltage. I bought another one which has the stand by voltage, but it does not make the tv go on. What can you recomend me. I did not have enogh time to work on it but now with the coronavirus I do have it and want to solve the issue. Please help me if you can. Tell me where can I go for more theory on modern TV repair. Great video, thanks man! Question for ya...if there is a capacitor on the cold side supplying the LED circuit, that is showing obvious signs of damage (ie...domed or convexed top, with carbon like dust all over it, and everything else in the immediate vicinity), is it possible for this capacitor to have only “semi failed.” In other words, be damaged, but still functional enough to make the TV operate normally for say, 15-20 mins, then cause the screen to go dark? Maybe due to it heating up, then losing its ability to function? And when this happens, cause the hot side circuit to “back feed” power directly back out the cord to the AC receptacle the TV is plugged into, causing a radical voltage fluctuation (ie 120VAC to 90 to 110 to 116 to 98, etc etc), at the receptacle outlet. Have you ever seen this happen before with any TV? I’m asking because it’s exactly what is happening with my 70” JVC TV. Apparently, this power board (7001-ZCO2-01), in this TV (model: LT70-MAW795), is well known for being a fairly unreliable POS on a regular basis. Luckily mine has lasted 3 plus years till the condition described above manifested itself. Unluckily, because of that, the “good” boards still available are $60 to $90 online. “ChengX” is the brand of the capacitors on this board. Thoughts, opinion, and any reply in general will be much appreciated! Thanks for your time and attention to this post! Liked and subbed. 👍

Thanks for this great information. Ok, I have a 60in Sharp TV. Totally dead. I removed the power supply & am getting 5V instead of 3.3v Standby on the connector to the main board. Is this correct??? Can Standby can be 5V too. Kindly if you know, inform me pls.

When i do this check, do I disconnect all other wires going to and from the power supply board? Other than the power cord. My UN65F9000 has standby. And powers up with One connect disconnected to show I need to connect one connect. But soon as i plug in the one connect it shows the SMART TV screen than shuts off and repeats that every 3 minutes.

If you don't have standby, then your definitely not going to have the Power ON voltage coming from the Mainboard. Check the FET's/Transistors on the Power supply's primary side for Shorts. Thats usually the main cause of Zero standby voltage on the secondary.

I have a sony kdl-40cx523. I have no standby light on and no power. On the psu I have 3.3 for stby. 3.12v on ac off det. 3.14v on power on. 12v on audio 12v. And 12v on reg 12v. I have also got all 5 unreg 24v also on opposite side of pcb. And still no standby when I power up tv. Can you advise. Thank you.

Do most LCD tvs use 3.3 volts to turn on the power supply. I'm working on a plasma, the PS-on signal grounds to turn on. Between you and Coppell TV I'm learning a lot. Working on a Samsung 50" plasma, power supply had blown main 12 A fuse. Shorted mosfets probably, all they sell is a repair kit for 25 bucks.

I always wondered if we could wire a TV power board wired in such way that it could directly run on a DC/battery/solar power ? With solar systems when the battery is charged then using an inverter seems stupid if most electronics run on low DC voltage...

When you have the "STBY" 3.3 vdc, then you turn the TV on, does the STBY voltage drop out? And return after the set is turned off? If the power supply is working as advertised, and the unit is plugged in (not on) the STBY voltage is always present? Thanks & I subbed! 🤓 Nice Sony!

Thank you for the video. That was very informative! I have the exact same model TV as the one you've tested in the video. I've confirmed that I have 3.3V standby voltage; I have 3.3V ACOFFDET voltage, but no power-on voltage (when the main board is disconnected). When I jump the power-on with the standby power, I get 12V AU12V voltage and hear the solenoid clicking as it tries to power on the tv. When the main board is connected, however, I don't see consistent standby/ ACOFFDET voltage, and zero AU12V voltage and don't hear the solenoid clicking. Would this indicate a faulty main board? Where should I go next to diagnose the problem? Thank you very much for your help.

Can the power supply board still be defective if the standby voltage is good? I have 3.556v standby voltage but when I tested the LED+ pins on the power supply board it showed the leds were good & the board was bad so now Im not sure if I have a defective PS board? I had to test the legs on the backside of the connector btw because the connector is too tiny even to fit the tiny probe master accessories I bought. Its on a 55" LG tv

Mr. Big Dog! I have a tcl 55us5800.. it won't turn on but the status light comes on and stay on. I tested the first 3 wires and I got about 10.8 volt dc. nothing else from the other wires. Any insight??? By the way I can hear like a hissing noise from the psu when turned on

I have a sony xbr 49x830c, doesnt turn on. No standby led light. I checked my standby voltage and it was only 2.29 volts and is suppose to be 3.3 volts. Is this a bad power supply board?

do you figure the issue would have been a bad regulator or more likely a bad cap? I realize it can be anything from resistors to bad IC output/switching but I was curious on your thoughts. I assume those lines are driven by voltage regulators and cleaned by caps.

Bad lcd screen. Actually the driver boards on the bottom of the screen are probably bad. U can disconnect the ribbon connectors at the bottom of the T-Con, one at a time and see if you get half a picture. If so then your screen is bad.

Hi there i got a sony tv The tv goes on and off by itself , it eill only turn on for no longer than 1 second. It will stay off for a long time and suddenly goes on by itself and so on. Toshiba 55L621U black screen. HaveTV for about 36 months now when I first bought it I noticed that the TV was sometimes turn itself off thought it was a energy saver feature or timer. Pay this no attention just would turn it back on ,tv would work perfect. So last night TV shuts off ,turn back on like many times before but this time ,this happen TV logo comes on screen goes off as normal but power lit flashing, tv screen goes black so i know something else wrong ,called the repair shop and they thinks that is the backlighting a very expensive repair so since I'm a do-it-yourself person, i taking the back panel off plug power back up and noticed all the backlight panel lights are on then i checked the main board for blown capacitors or fuse ,couldn't visually see any what is your advice

My power supply board doesn’t have STNBY or PWR ON. It only says stuff like GND_al_bo, Val_bo and DIM1, DIM2, DIM3 etc. Is this something you have knowledge of? I would really like some help fixing my philips 46pfl8007T/12. The led is blinking twice red. Tv not turning on nor any audio. Remote also not working

Hi there from Czech Republic (Europe) ! I have there older LG TV 32LW570S with unknown mainboard error (blacklight ok, boot screen sometimes ok, then flickering screen, and after few second it is getting worse). Unfortunately I can´t find any seller of spare parts for it arround in Europe/Asia - I wonder if you maybe know some good source of such parts .. thanks !

The board I have on a Sony XBR-55X900C doesn't have the pins labeled that well, but it does mention 3.3v for standby. One of the pins is only measuring 2.38v which I think its standby. Does this indicate an issue with the power supply or some other board? When I disconnect any of the other boards, I don't get any voltages.

I have the same problem but as soon as I plug in, the power board blows the fuse. I disconnected all boards leading back to power supply board and plugged in and still blows power supply board fuse. I have a short somewhere on power supply board that is blowing the fuse. Any ideas? I've already tested my bridge rectifier and it's good. I don't see any caps that are blown.

For sure you have a short. You must check the main line circuit of your power board (bridge rectifier, diode and transistor or the filters, also the main capacitor) send me a picture of your board in my e mail. I will help you. Gjergj.kastro@gmail.com

(PS/ON, Pwr On, and so on) YES. However, I have only seen AC Detect on Sony brand audio/video equipment, ie no one else. Please always read the description first.

I have a Samsung 55 inch led tv. When I check the standby voltage I have 13 volts when I should have 8. Would this cause other issues. The standby light illuminates and when I turn the tv on it says smart tv on the screen then goes to a black screen. No sound and I see the toggle makes the standby light blink but won't do anything else. I can only turn the tv off by unplugging it. Any one have any idea what it could be? Thank you

Hi, I hope you have the time to answer a couple of questions. I have apart my Hitachi 55" LED LE5569 tv and the backlights did not work. I replaced the bad ones but, the backlights will still not come on. I have changed the power supply and the main board and have taken the panel outside and looked through it to see it damage using the sun and I cannot find any damage. Anyway the power supply board is MP1-1450 the two connectors that hook up to the 12 led strips, one of them reads 336 vdc but the other one is not steady it seems to go up and down. I checked all of the led strips indivually and this repair is driving me nuts. I have the voltages to the main board. I have the standby blue light on. I have never seen the picture or heard a sound out out of this tv. Can you help please?

If you were to disconnect the wire with the unsteady voltage reading from, or very close to, the connector which feeds the backlights and take another voltage reading on the backlights side of the open circuit you made by disconnecting the wire, and the reading: A.) Remained unsteady, then there exists an open circuit in that wire, somewhere between the connector which feeds the backlights, along the wire that had the 336 vdc (supply) wire through the led's up to the point of open circuit you made, or defective led(s). This open circuit, or defective led(s), must be located and repaired: B.)Obtained the same voltage reading as the other led (supply) wire, then there exists no problem with the led(s) or these 2 wires from the connector which feeds the backlights along the supply wire (the wire with the 336 vdc reading) up to the point of intentional open circuit. Now is the time the intentional open circuit should be restored to its pre-intentionally-open-circuited state. If there exists continuity from the point of intentional open circuit restoration through the connector which feeds the backlights, then the problem exists elsewhere, probably on the board. I hope I have been concise and thorough in my attempt to help you diagnose the problem with the backlights, and I hope they are understandable. However, I just noticed your comment is 10 months old and you have probably already repaired it by now, but I will still submit my reply in case you haven't repaired it yet, and haven't returned it to the owner, junked it, etc. (lol) Anyway, I hope it helps.

@@JerryBrogdonmrfixxitt I believe that I ended up having another backlight strip that was bad and it prevented the other ones from working and once I replaced it, they all came on. However, even when I hooked TV up to antenna to check it, I was never able to get any kind of a signal or any other kind of input to work.

@@dallaspilotcar9293 Did that tv only have the one button requiring a remote control to operate the tv? If so, did you have the remote control? If so, was the remote control programmed to that tv? If so, did the remote control have good, strong batteries? If so, did the tv scan for tv stations? No, it didn't, you said that the tv never had a signal. The problem there could have been with the remote control or its batteries, causing a a no communication state to exist, which would explain the tv to have no signal. But I'm sure you know this, so it must have been something else.

They have to match example LC420DUE (FG) (CD) you have to make sure all references are the same so a LC420EGE (CM) (DH) will not work nor will a different make as all makes and models have a different voltage some are 5v some are 12v, a Samsung screen will not work in place of a AUO and visa versa........ be careful a LG TV may not use a LG screen some TVs can have the same model number look the same but have different screens, also you can’t put a Samsung screen on an LG tcon etc hope this helps 😊

If all you were going to do was replace boards - you could have saved yourself the pain of testing via boar swapping - if it works with the new psu then job done - Are we going to see you repair the board down to component level? Was looking forward to that bit

So all you did was change the PSU. Cost to Customer $100 or more. And that TV may last or not? WHY ? Because You did not find the fault, Why was the PSU open circuit? and what caused it to happen. Was there a Fault on the High V board, Did you even test the DC out to the High V Board. How long did you Run TV after changing the PSU before returning it to the owner. That is not TV Repair. The fault could just be dry joins or be a $0.20 diode. Now do real TV repair at component fault finding NOT BOARD CHANGING or do you not understand how SM PSU works?
