Thanks so much for this and your other recent video on printing. The quest for acceptable quality and coloured prints is the reason I got myself a quality monitor (270C in my case). I've been a subscriber since the day I received my 270C and your videos have been hugely informative, educational and helpful. Thank you Art!

Art, thank you. Your video has reinforced what I am already doing. A quick question, do you select your paper profile under the view/drop-down and proof setup (I use Epson Legacy Platine on Stylus Pro 4800) before you start working on the image in PS? That way, you can see what the image is going to print like as you work on it (realizing that the monitor and paper will never be exactly the same). Appreciate you time.

Thank you! So for me I work with my file normally until the end. The editing philosophy here is not to pigeon hole yourself edit of any given image to one specific type of paper. Paper specific adjustment can be made at the very end before printing. Hope this helps

Hi Art, I'm very thankful for these videos. Your work is appreciated. I'm looking for your preferred workflow for black and white? I've always done Advanced b&w through "printer manages colors" and I'm wondering if this is what you would recommend. If so, I notice the printer profile also defaults to sRGB when you do this and if this is something I should be concerned with. Thanks!
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight Год назад
I would do B&W through PS and print with profile. With printer manage you can't guarantee result.

Thank you for the lesson. Can you do one on photo lab printing? I use Costco and Bayphoto labs using traditional darkroom paper. I understand that Bayphoto lab can print using Adobe 1998 color space.

I use both as well. Let me see what I can do. This will be a great collaboration with Bay.

I might have to start with Costco first since Bay is in the mist of NorCal Fires.

I have a mac book pro I have used photoshop as the color management in the print settings but as you explain when you go to print settings( print mode and color mode ) are not highlighted, ii have a macbook any suggestions to know in fact that color is managed by photoshop? thanks Adam
@ArtIsRight

It is printer dependent, so more pro models would give you more control where as more consumer line will give you less.

Art have you used the Epson Print Layout Software in your printing workflow? I’m curious to see if there are any benefits it would seem to force you to save the proof file but another than that maybe makes the settings a little easier to navigate. Also, do you use Capture One? Interested to see a workflow from Capture One. I also noticed you didn’t proof the file using the paper icc profile for to make any contrast or sharpening adjustments what are your thoughts on that? Thanks for all your videos.

Using epson software is a personal preference, I find that Epson like the camera companies make great hardware, decent to mediocre firmware and just plain terrible software for computer. Which is why I stick with PS and LR printing directly for my entire career. Plus PS or LR rarely change the print component so learn once and use it for life. OEM software GUI tends to change frequently and I don't have time to relearn that every time. I do use Capture one but for very specific uses only, to say, I don't print with Capture one because majority of my workflow does not revolves arounds it. I didn't proof paper profile because this an overview of how to do it. Proofing is for refinement and thought many find it useful personally for me accounting for the differences in the medium, paper vs back light, I am able to get really close to the result that I want without soft proofing. If one is more particular about the way how one's images print than soft proofing is something that can be done. Contrast adjustment wise, it will come close but never quite on and for me I don't print for exhibit or sell my images for 5 or 6 digits so I don't worry about that too much. This is one of those things that can drive a person mad trying to match, for me I am happy with the result that I got. About sharpening, now a days I rarely sharpen, but again it can be done. As far as proofing sharpening, it can only do so much because it is still based on the smooth LCD pixel and not paper texture, translation is never 1:1 on this. Proofing have more to do with color than sharpening. Hope this help and clarify things up. Thanks for the questions!

Hello. I really strugle with Printing. I calibrated my SW270C as you showed in other videos. Now I have a Profile of a monitor SW270C and CYMK profile of the printer. How do I save the image png. or jpeg. that will have this profile of a monitor and CYMK and print as I see it
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight Год назад
There's a lot of disconnect in your question. First, your printer that you think is CMYK because of the ink set that you used is technically a RGB printer, at least if you have the Epson, Canon, HP, inkjet. If you do prepress then that is CMYK but you won't necessary be profiling for that yourself unless you work in a lab. Secondly, your images can be tagged with any color gamut, it is best practice to tag it with a reference standard, sRGB, Adobe RGB, or ProPhoto RGB. So the only thing that you have to do to print is go to print and in the dialog, set it as I have shown here, so that Photoshop manages color and you just choose the paper profile. WIth out knowing the printer / paper combo that you have I can only advise in the general sense. Also how are you profiling the paper, what device are you using, or are you using the downloadable ICC from the paper manufacturer. This can lead to more questions on your end and I would suggest a DM on fb page or insta.

Hello sir, thanks a lot for this lesson, my printer Epson L805 when I print the three-color C and M and Y , the result is the black color was printed with them, please please help me, what is the way to prevent the black color by printing with the tricolor
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 3 года назад
I'm not aware of any, unless you have a custom driver that will tell the printer to print without black.

I love your videos! I have a question though. I when I print it makes a transparent blue cast over the entire photo. It’s an Epson 2850, right driver installed, calibrated, monitor is color corrected, been through all the settings, using Epson Premium Gloss, Converted to CMYK to be sure. Called Epson got generic advice which didn’t work. I realize realize it’s not a photo printer, but should be able to print a nice armature picture print. I’ve searched everywhere online, all advice didn’t work. I’m grasping at straws. Do you know about anything about it?
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 2 года назад
Usually even thought the printer is CMYK for photo you would still send the color over in RGB and have the printer driver translate it to RGB on it own using paper profile. Are you using a paper profile, generic or custom made? And is color management turned off on the printer?

@@ArtIsRight What is a "Printer Profile"? I am confused as to whether it is the "Paper Type" or an ICC profile? I've set the correct paper type using EPSON paper, as for the ICC profile, I can't find it on the "Printer Profile" in "Photoshop Print Settings". I was told from EPSON support it's "Imbedded in the driver, only the bigger models have these profiles". In the Windows printer "Properties" under "More Options" -> "Advanced" -> "Color Correction" I've tried all the "Color Management" options.
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 2 года назад
If you use Photoshop, the paper profile is usually loaded into the system and you can just choose it. What is the exact Epson model that you have? Is this a workforce or eco tank? Are their letters in front of the numbers? If you have those that I mentioned there's really no paper profile you have to create one with a tool or try to find it online somewhere. These are not pro photo printer which is why icc profiles are not given.
@peterweyland6824

@@ArtIsRight Epson ET-2850. You're right it's not a photo printer, but would it be safe to assume, it can at least print useable pictures?
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 2 года назад
It would be no icc profile or color control. The icc profile is the important part for precision, that is the one where you have to find a custom icc from someone for the specific paper type or make one of your own.

Hi Art I have a question that does not pertain to this video but I hope you don't mind. I just downloaded the latest Palette Master Element which seemed to be 1.3.10 but when I installed it the program comes up as 1.3.11 what is going on. I see no mention of this newer version anywhere

Current distribution is 1.3.11, if you are having issues with it then downgrade to either 1.3.10 or 1.3.8 :)

Art (slightly off topic) Can my SW 321C display (3) different desktop sources - all at 4K - through a software KVM? (I'm looking at Multiplicity)
@ArtIsRight
@ArtIsRight 4 года назад
If that is from 1 input source and your software can handle it, I don't see an issue. What you can do too is pipe in each sources through each of the 4 input on the SW321C.
