It’s time to get more wall space. I’ve been talking about it for a while now and finally solved the problem. This wall cabinet gives me 4x the storage space on the wall. Lots of tools will be moving into this cabinet. FREE PLANS ARE AVAILABLE ON PATREON. I JUST LAUNCHED THE PATREON PAGE AND OFFERING THE PLANS FREE WHEN YOU JOIN THE PATREON FAMILY. Very nice and I also just watched Part 2. One comment and a question for anyone's input. When building the box one needs to be mindful of placing the fasteners in relation to the upcoming saw cuts. With my luck I'd be shooting at least one piece of metal smack dab in the line to be cut! As for using staples, I only have a finishing nailer. Would glue and 16 ga straight nails be adequate or a big fail? Thanks in advance & peace.
Nice. I will be doing this type of cabinet over my workbench, perhaps a pair of them in a square configuration (24x24"), to hold all my hand tools. I too have limited space in my basement shop (L-shaped, 24x12').
I subscribed to your channel a few weeks ago. Really like this project and the 8x storage space cabinet you made afterwards. I noticed in this video "How to Get 4x Storage in a Wall Cabinet (Part 1)" that you started out by cutting your plywood with a panel saw. I was wondering if you built your own panel saw and if so, I would be interested in seeing a video on how you built the panel saw. If not, do you have a source for the plans to build one? I am planning to build my own panel saw soon.
I actually built this many years ago. I'm planning on removing it from the shop in the near future because I need the space and I do not use it enough to justify the space it occupies.
Great idea! I have a small 12'x24' workshop that I am trying to get organized right now. Obviously, I have very limited wall space to work with as well. This idea just solved a bunch of problems for me. Thanks for taking the time to film, edit and share your ideas. One video in and I am subscribed already. I will go through your playlist and look for other neat ideas. Thanks :-)
Great project, have a tool storage cabinet on my “to do” list , love the idea of making a full box then cutting 🪚 to size so it all aligns easily 💪🏻, THANKS !👍🏻
Excellent idea & execution. Mine will be somewhat similar, but due to limited space and location restraints the doors will only open on one side and the cabinet box itself will be deeper in order to allow me to have a properly angled plane till. I may have a saw or two (or three - "or more") hanging on the unhinged side for easy access for the unhinged woodworker. We'll see.
I made a similar cabinet with additional peg board on the outer surface of the cabinet which gave me a fifth area for tools. I love your easy and exact details you described. Thank you very much for your ideas.
Red Dog Workshop asked about your panel saw which takes up wall space. After injuring my back I could no longer cut plywood on the table saw so I made a wooden cutting guide for my circular saw and cut off the excess beyond the blade so it is zero clearance. I cut the panel to rough dimensions and it works fine. I have compared it to a Festool tracksaw in several tests and my cuts are dimensionally comparable. The advantages of the Festool areq a more stable track to guide the saw, nice vinyl strips on the underside to provide slip resistance for the track, built in track to attach a clamp anywhere along the track and a system in a box approach. The homemade guide is dirt cheap, you likely already have a circular saw that cost you less than Festool. I do my rough cuts outside on plywood with 1 or 2 inch foam board on top then final cuts on the table saw. You might consider that approach for now, then when you get rich, but the Festool.
Thank you very much for your comments. I will be making one when I do the video on the circular saw. I have the ideas already in my mind on how i want to make it.
Your video was awesome! Would you have a set of plains on this build I would love to have a set. I was injured when using my table saw and it is still set up the way I had it set the day of my injury and that was three years ago. You have sparked my interest in woodworking with this cabinet, this might be the thing that gets me back out in the shop and I have a great need for something like your cabinet. Again thank you for all the hard work you do making the videos I know it is not any easy job. GW Ps I have subscribed and hit the bell
Love this design & your doing a great job of letting viewers know how & why in your builds.. Can't tell you how annoying it is when people share cool projects & designs... BUT DON'T ACTUALLY SHARE THEM? I'm actually drawing a blank on a project I'm working on at home to create a small shop of sorts but using the 8ft space between my 2 10' x 10' metal sheds as my side walls & then framed the back wall about a foot off the block wall to help deflect shop sounds away from neighbors... I've actually been able to put it together (about 70% finished) almost entirely by picking up material freebies off the various classified ad sites & retasking other freebies & tearouts from other jobs I've done. I decided to expandit just a little & I had installed (stuffed it in the corner is probaqbly more accurate) what was a lower cabinet up high in the back right corner bcuz it worked well enough at the time & it still works there if I can figure a clever way to now add locking double doors as an extension from the bottom of the cabinet to the paver floor bcuz that space is perfect for locking up my pressure washer, airless sprayer, & a few other tools that will swtill allow quick access... This extension has got me stuck which is fairly unusal ... but after seeing your video I thought I'd put this out there & see if you or your viewers have a few ideas to throw my way ? The footprint of the cabinet at the floor will be 65" wide x 22" to 24" deep x 50" high & my problem is making it fairly secure without an ugly 2x4 frame for speed bumps to roll over? I'm looking at possibly cutting a channel in the pavers to sink the lower frame in unless some interesting ideas come up? Thanks for any help & keep the great videos coming!
Thanks for the video. A slight variation I’ve found helpful when cutting the box is to raise the blade to slightly less than the thickness of the sides ( 1/16 or less ), that way the box is still “ intact “ after the last cut, then I just complete the separation with a razor knife, that way there is no wobbling of the part not supported by the back piece.
Nice, concise and clear video. Just what I need for my overly crowded space. I subscribed but never saw the bell. For Mr. Schemmel there is no need to apologize for your English. It is far better than most of us German.
Excellent video and process. Thank you for sharing. In response to your request for questions, I'm interested in building a benchtop router table for a small shop around 24in in length, 14in deep, and 12 to 14in tall. The height is contingent on the trim router I'll be using. Thank you for any suggestions.
The outside and the inside of the outer cabinet door. (2x) Then the inter panel again the outside and the inner side of that area. (2x) Plus the back wall that normally would exist on a cabinet. My other cabinet video offers 8x the storage space. Check that video out.
I like your work and would love to see move space saving projects. I believe if you are able to make and sell plans of your projects the money will help you keep making videos just like this one
Could you give the dimensions of the various parts: front and back, sides, top and bottom. I want to duplicate what you have done this next week. It would be very helpful. I never heard the size even though I have gone through the video a number of times. Thanks for this information in advance.
I just finished a cabinet made using your techniques however mine didn't have the center section, maybe the next one will. One suggestion when cutting the front in half like you show around 9:00 minutes, I would change my blade to the thinness blade you own, I really don't like the gap ( slightly more than 1/8") my standard blade left in the between the doors. I'm trying to come up with something that doesn't look like an after thought.
To like the Swiss Army Cabinet ! I like the design concept quite a bit as everyone is tight on wall space in our shops Looks like you use some pretty good plywood for shop cabinets too i am located in he North East. And. Finding decent plywood for a fair price is quite a challenge i have a older cousin i the same area. And he and i always talk about that issue as he and i both have a history in Commercial Woodworking and like to work with better materials these days most of our supplies come from the ig box stores so we are imited to whatever they. Stock that are often more about t their profit margins then the quality our general conclusion has been that the imported Baltic Birch Py they carry is one of the better deals or else we are stuck wit MDF and he ad i both dont like the dust of MDF although it does have some Good characteristics for retain applications I personally try to avoid it whe i can I recently saw a Woodworkers tool storage cabinet that has a similar design to your cabinet yet is on wheels and stands around 6 foot tall he also incorporated a French Cleat system on the interior to. Make custom Tool holders that can be moved around in the compartments i thought it was pretty sharp plus another advantage was it all folded up and was lockable Which is a nice feature. When you work in a large commercial shop Nd leave your personal tools in the building over night Like any security it helps keep the honest people more honest IMO as i have had co workers “ borrow” things like router bits and forget to return them Ironically ive always engraved my router bits in a not so obvious. Way and i have gone to retrieve what. Is mine ! As a rule i can reckonize its missing immediately as i am very OCD about my tool organization myself my Co workers used to make fun of me because i like my things clean and organized It never bothered me as i feel that it helps me do a good job. At whatever I’m working on
This looks like a good, solid design worthy of incorporation into my new shop. I like the ordinary guy channels like yours. They're more like the rest of us.
It would be inspiring if you could put pictures or video to show it full of tools. Are you planing to put peg boards every where or only hangers and nails?
Doing a similar concept now by reccessing an 8 " cabinet into a 2 X 6 wall . Minimizing the projection into the bathroom space . Great use of unused space . Great video sir !
Thanks for a video loaded with good ideas. I'm already thinking of ideas to improve and adapt it. Have you thought about using 1/4" pegboard for the central divider? It would need support along the cut edge to be strong enough, but would be great for hanging tools on. Pegboard could also be used for the back, set forward by 3/4" to allow for wall mounting blocks behind it. I was a little surprised when I saw you cut the hinges so short. You are losing a lot of rigidity by not having them run the full height of the cabinet. You could still get the same economy of materials without sacrificing strength by cutting them into two pieces and having the gap in the middle. It's the extreme top and bottom areas that do the most work.
Yes, this cabinet can be adapted very easy to a french cleat system, pegboard and more. I have already changed my mind several times as to how and what I'm putting into it. That's a good idea about the splitting of the hinges. Thank you very much.
@@PawPawsWorkShop Piano hinges are not easy to find here in Taiwan. Can regular door hinges be used and how many should I use? Can you make a video on how to mount it on the wall?
I love watching your videos. I've done so much with my workshop since I've been looking at your work my work shop is coming and looking so professional. Thanks again Herbie South Wales UK
Paw Paw. I have much Love. Loyalty and Respect for you for many Reasons. I can tell your a Family Man and a Godley Man. God Bless you and your family..
What types of projects do you mainly do? You start small and add tools as you need them to complete your projects. I started with a jig saw and a drill, then added a circular saw.
I’m starting to try my hand at built ins and cabinets around the house. Recently purchased a nice table saw and track saw. So many projects that need to be done around my house.
Paw Paw, I always go back to this one. I’d love if you built more storage cabinets and drawers like for laundry etc. but with the concept of storing storage like wood workers do… if that makes sense?! I always look at my kitchen cabinets and think, why didn’t I build them myself because the use of space is terrible. They look nice but lack that customizable quality and design that I’ve seen implemented in the best wood shops like yours. Anyways, I’m shocked this isn’t more “on trend” than it is beyond a wood shop.
Great job, looks great. Once again you have encouraged me just to get on with the build. I've been going to build one if these for quite some time now, but time always seems to get away from me, go figure eh. Anyways that was a nice easy way to cut through the box to separate into individual compartments...ya gotta love it. I think my working area is even less which begs the question...what am I waiting for? Thanks a bunch, now to apply a nice finish....ahhhhh. Have an awesome week! Andrew ps, I have now resubscribed after my cell phone crooked and lost it all.
Just remember, I cannot chose what commercials are played. I can tell you this, they do help support my channel and the money I receive goes back into the channel. Thank you for your support.
Very nicely done sir 👍 I definitely want to do this project, first I think I should build a workshop 😆😁 Thanks for sharing your thoughts and videos, Rodney
Genius to build the whole box first then slice it up. Perfect symmetry and no need to fiddle around with squaring it up on each section. Very clever! Also liked that you cut the long piano hinge. I did not know you could chop them up. I would never use the Dremel, it takes way too long. Angle grinder for me! It deburrs faster too. There is a nice in between tool - Dremel Saw Max which is a small grinder tool but much bigger than the Dremel rotary. I would finish them off before adding the hinges. I would also have liked to see how you tackled the outer doors for closing. Latch would have to be top and bottom with cabinet magnet latches, most likely. Thank you for a great demo and very useful project! I need to make some tool cabinets like this and also some spice cabinets like this. My spice range is huge.
I love the simplicity of the way it was built. I can surely follow it. The way you speak is very clear to understand. Thanks for sharing. Please make more multi-purpose cabinets.
OOh Nice! Yes, that depth would be perfect for jars and cans. And like another viewer suggested, recess the whole cabinet into the wall, between studs and it projects less into the room. Thank you Paw Paw, and thank you Patricia Boies. I am getting ready remodel my very small kitchen! People like Paw Paw are just the gems of life!
Brilliant idea. I'm always out of space and don't have much wall space. Going to build it with one add on.I'm going to put it on a cart so that I can pull it to wherever I need it in the shop.It will cut down on time spent walking around.
I started watching your channel because of your CNC projects. But I enjoy builds like this as well. Keep doing what you are doing. Your channel is great.
Thank you very much. Yes, we have spoken before on the forum and I have seen you here before as well. Thank you for your support. Would love to see some of your projects.
Less than one sheet of plywood. The dimensions are discussed in more detail in part 2. FREE plans are available if you choose to join my Patreon Family, however, after viewing both part 1 and part 2 you will have the information needed to build your own.
Love i. Really want to build this as it will solve some of my space issues as I am just now setting up my new shop. Will you be putting out the dimensions with your next video? Great job and so simple too.
Great idea. Simply explained what and how. I also need to do such a thing, I have little space in the garage :). Although I would personally hide the hinge inside.
@@PawPawsWorkShop you welcome. I know it's an option. I would just do it personally. I am also looking for places in a small garage and your idea is great
This is a really nice design, I have a french cleat system in my shop, that I love, but I'm going to add this to the project list to free us some space. Can't wait to see how it looks filled up!
@@PawPawsWorkShop Are there any plans or was it another one of your creations of the mind and build as you go? I would like to have one but just don't have the capital at this time.
I like your design but I'm sure it is very heavy. If I were to build one I think I would opt for 1/2" case work and install 1/4" peg board instead of plywood panels to optimize hanging options.
