Hello and welcome to the Canadian work permit video!
Do you wish to work in Canada? Are you having trouble finding information on how to begin this process? This video will help to explain the process for obtaining a temporary Canadian work permit that will enable you to work in Canada.
In this video we will explain:
How to obtain a job offer in Canada
How to obtain a labour market opinion
How to apply for your work permit
Obtaining medical and police clearance
Validity of the work permit
Obtaining a Job Offer
This is the most difficult step. In order to obtain a work permit it is necessary to have a job offer from a Canadian employer.
How can you obtain a job offer?
There are a few different ways to get a job offer:
You can contact employers directly and submit your resume to them.
You can apply through employment agencies or contacts in Canada who can
forward your resume to possible employers.
You can post your resume on websites like canadacv.com where an employer
can see your resume and, if interested, contact you for more information.
This process can take a lot of time and will require perseverance. Finding a job is never easy and you must have a great deal of patience. When you have a job offer confirmed, you can move on to the next step.
Obtaining a Labour Market Opinion
The second step in the process is to obtain a Labour Market Opinion (LMO). To get an LMO approved, it is necessary to fill out some forms and submit supporting documents as well. This process can take from a few weeks to about six months depending on the type of the work and the province where you will work.
Once an LMO is approved is it possible to move on to the next step.
Applying for your Work Permit
The third step is applying for the work permit. This application must be filed at a Canadian Embassy or Consulate in the country where you have lived legally for at least one year. You will also be required to attend an interview at the visa office where you submitted your application. Direct family members are allowed to be a part of the application, and the process to get the work permit and entry visa takes approximately 2 weeks.
Obtaining medical and police clearance
All applicants will have to submit a medical and police clearance. Applicants who have a criminal record will be deemed inadmissible to Canada and refused entry into the country. You must contact your local authorities to obtain your medical clearance. Only specific practitioners can provide a valid medical clearance. For a list of recognizes practitioners in your area, please consult Citizenship and Immigration Canada.
Validity of the Work Permit
Work permits are generally valid for 1-2 years, depending on the length of the contract but can be renewed if the contract is extended. Persons who have been in Canada for a few years under a temporary work permit are eligible to apply for permanent residence under the Skilled Worker class or new Canadian Experience Class.

You are correct, you need to find employers looking for food workers (and there are plenty). But you can also look into a provincial nominee program in the province where your sister lives. That might be a better route.

Hi Phil, In most cases you need a job offer before you can get a work permit - though there are "open work permits". You do not need a work permit to get a job offer, but many employers in Canada do not want to hire foreign workers without a work permit, so it sounds like a catch-22. You need to find a company that needs to hire foreign workers - because they cannot fill their job openings with Canadians and Canadian permanent residents - to get a job offer. Then you can apply for the permit.

Hi Edward, there are three streams to the International Experience Canada program. The working holiday stream does not require a job offer but the Young Professionals and Co-Op streams do require it. We have more information on our site slash international experience Canada. LMOs are not required.

There is also a new Skilled Trades stream that accepts 1000 people per year (at least this year) where the requirements are less stringent if you have the necessary skills and experience.

Hi Hichem, Your work permit is conditional on your meeting the standards of your contract. But the employer must also meet those standards. In short: it depends why you were let go.

Hi Samir, Your processing time depends in part on which country you live in. You should know that three and a half months is a relatively small amount of time for a permanent residence application. The selection interviews are being held for people who submitted their applications in October of 2009, so that means you will be waiting quite some time if you applied for permanent residence. If it is a temporary work permit, your processing time is likely a lot shorter.

Daniel, If you have a relative in Canada, that is a big step towards becoming a permanent resident: a lot of the provincial nomination programs give you points for having family connections in the province. Ideally, you would hope that the PNP for the province your connection lives in is also looking for hospitality workers.

Thanks Edward. There is indeed a "working holiday" visa (otherwise known as an open work permit) and some are available for Koreans. However, there is a very limited number of these available each year. I regret to tell you that there are currently no more spaces open for Koreans in 2013. If your girlfriend wants one, she will have to wait until January 2014. She would be wise to apply the very first work day of January, that is, the 2nd.

Hi Sadak, It sounds like you might be a good candidate for a provincial nominee program, provided your family lives in a province that has a family-support stream. If you just want the work permit, you should see if you can get a job offer through your family connections.

Hi Sazzard, Your best bet, if you don't have connections in Canada and cannot get transferred to Canada by your current employer, is to either apply for jobs with Canadian companies (directly or through Canadian job sites) or by contacting an immigration law firm that also does employment law and offers to match immigrants with jobs.

Hi there, if you can get a job offer as a butcher your future employer may be able to get a labour market opinion - a statement from the government saying there aren't enough butchers - as a butcher, but will likely have trouble as a waiter.

THis video was extremely informative and helpful, thank you so much. My girlfriend is in South Korea right now and is starting to get her work permit for Canada. She says in Korea they have 워킹홀리데이 (working holiday). Is this the same thing as a work permit? The language barrier is a bit difficult when we're talking about specific topics such as this. She also insists that she doesn't need a job offer. I keep telling her she needs one, but she tells me she doesn't. This is a rough process, haha.

Also, the Foreign Service is currently on strike (the strikes are rotating) so your application will likely take longer than the 2 months listed as the average processing time for Sydney.

Hi Erwin, No, some employers do want a valid work permit, but there are other employers who are actively looking to hire people with the right skills even if they are currently living outside of Canada. These employers give job offers to support work permit applications.

You need to have a job offer to get a work visa. You should ask your friend in Canada if they know any employers looking to hire in your field and see if you can get a job offer from one of them.

Hi, First thank you for this informative ,I got a B1 visitor-Business visa that last more than a year and Im intending now to stay and work and I got an offer but the employers are asking me to get a work permit on my own then come to work dont know why they refuse to take charge ! In order to get a work permit you normally need to have a job offer. You need to target employers are looking to hire foreign workers.

Your best bet is to go for a job offer first, before you try for a work permit. There are many sites online that can help match your skills to an employer.

You would need to get a job offer from a Canadian employer. However, it is unlikely would be able to get a positive labour market opinion (LMO) - a statement from the government saying there are not enough security guards available in Canada - for your occupation. Do you have other skills?

I believe you need to submit those with your initial application or it could delay the application, but it may depend on the rules of the visa office. You do not normally submit the application in person at an Embassy.

Hello there, i´ve seen your video and let me tell you, you guys have done a wonderful job by taking a bit of your time and helping people about this topic. Anyways, my cuestion is: is it possible to apply for the skilled worker program if you have deported from antother country before (not for crime or felony, just for living there illegaly) ?. I´ve done some research and i know there is a skilled worker program wich allows you to go to Canada by yourself and find a job while you´re there and of course you need to prove enough economic funds and some other stuff. The thing is that i was deported from the US few years ago and i don´t know if i should be able to go to Canada, so please, if you have some information please let me know, thanl you very much. Happy 2014. Please excuse my english, it´s getting a little bit rusty.

To try to answer your question: This is fairly complicated because Canada and the US share their information about immigration denials. Technically, you are only inadmissible to Canada for immigration violations in Canada, but it is conceivable they could hold your US immigration violations against you. - Am I correct that as an Australian citizen I do not need to apply for a TRV and therefore to supply my passport with my application for a work permit? - Do I need to undergo a medical examination to work as an Osteopath in Nova Scotia? Yes, you need a work permit to work in Canada temporarily, but so does anyone else who isn't a Canadian citizen or permanent resident. And yes, many people need visas just to visit. You would need one.

Hi Sara, You do not need a visa to come to Canada so you do not have to submit your passport, only a copy of it which shows your biographical information and photo. If you are required to undergo a medical examination, they will notify you in writing. This is up to the visa officer reviewing your application. You will have to provide proof of your credentials and bank statements in order to show you are qualified and can support yourself. The permit is a piece of paper with security features.

You need to have legal status in the country you are living in when you apply. If you do not currently have legal status in the country you are living in, you will need to move to a country where you have legal status and then apply for the work permit.

Hello! When you apply for a job they inform you that you must have valid visa/work permit, in order to get work permit you need a job offer, but in order to get a job offer you need to have work permit?!

Hi, You should know that the Canadian Foreign Service is on rotating strikes at the moment, and that is one reason why your application is taking forever. That is in addition the 7 month processing time. That processing time is a result of volume of applications. Hope this information helps.

Hi Bijoy, The major requirement for a temporary work permit is a job offer; the language requirements for temporary work would be related to the job you are going to perform. Most likely, you will also need a Labour Market Opinion, which is a statement issued by the government of Canada confirming that your future employer needs to hire a temporary worker. And yes, you can bring your spouse.

No, those are not necessarily required for an LMIA, just for applying for Express Entry for permanent residence. But, you need to qualify for the job offer that the employer is getting the LMIA for.

I am not sure exactly what you mean by authorization clearance. To get a work permit you need a job offer from a Canadian employer supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment.

Hi British Biggie We only deal with Canada, but Canada does indeed make distinctions between nationals of different countries, only semi-officially. The UK has somewhat stricter immigration regulations than Canada, in most ways, so I would think it is safe to at least assume that they have different standards for different nationals.

Hi Nithin, It depends how you are coming to work in Canada. If you are just getting a work permit, what you need will depend on the requirements of the job. However, if you are coming to work in Canada permanently, through a permanent resident stream such as the Federal Skilled Worker, you will need language test results, such as IELTS. TOEFL is usually for schools.
