In this video, I talk with @DataScienceJay about how to get a data science job at a FANG Company (Facebook, Amazon, Netflix, Google) and bay area startups. Jay has worked as a data scientist at multiple data science startups in the bay area and has started interviewquery.com. He has a tremendous amount of experience with the FANG interview process and on his youtube channel he has multiple mock interviews with real technical questions from these companies.

Ken great content as always! Could you list all the skills that fang would expect from a person to have ?
@KenJee_ds
@KenJee_ds 4 года назад
Unfortunately, that list really depends on the role. One thing we didn't mention is that each data science role in a Fang company can be very different. For example, in facebook, some of the data scientists do work that is very focused on data analytics. Some of their other ones do completely ml engineering work. My best advice is to be very focused on becoming great at SQL and python, but get some familiarity with the tools used at each company. Go through 20 or so job descriptions that you are interested in and see what skills are common across them. If you don't have some of those skills, try to learn them! I hope this helps!

Really awesome ken! Every video of yours is exceptionally informative,however there's one question that,how much of data structures and algorithms i should know as compared to a software engineer when interviewing at bigwigs. I know about various things to know as a data scientist/ml but how does it differentiate you from a software engineer,a little more insight on what these "coding" requirements are is needed. Thanks in advance!
@KenJee_ds
@KenJee_ds 4 года назад
I think that you should have familiarity with algorithms, but I haven't seen anyone asked to code them during an interview. You should know how linked lists, queues, etc. work, but not much more than that. For every job, I recommend looking on glassdoor to see what types of questions they may ask. If you see they may have some questions related to these, you can brush up! I hope this helps!

I've had several recruiters reach out from the FANG companies recently. I'm stunned that they keep telling me that I need to relocate to the Bay Area even after announcing that their workers will stay at home through 2020 at the least. Where is the disconnect?
@KenJee_ds
@KenJee_ds 4 года назад
That is pretty surprising to me as well. I think this comes with a disconnect between recruiting practices and the actual nature of the work. Hopefully in another few months they will realize that there is absolutely no reason most data scientists really need to be on the compound!

Hi Ken, thank you for your contribution in data science field. I have a very general question: I have recently chosen the carrier shift into data science and learned excel, tableau, sql and currently learning python, so how should i cope up with the practice to make sure that I donot forget the usage of previous tools. Is there any way that i stay in touch with all the tools that i learned everyday.
@KenJee_ds
@KenJee_ds 4 года назад
I think this is a very good question. Honestly, what is most important is that you can pick up (or relearn) these tools relatively quickly when you need to apply them. I think the greatest skill of a data scientist is the ability to quickly familiarize yourself with new tools or older tools that you have used previously. I recommend staying sharp through projects, but it is ok if you lose touch with these things sometimes. I hope this helps!

Hi Mr Ken. Been a self taught programmer and a background in agriculture. I'm looking at the requirements for being a Data Scientist/ML engineer and it's almost overwhelming. How important is learning the maths behind machine learning algorithms and what would you recommend for me given my background?
@KenJee_ds
@KenJee_ds 4 года назад
I think you are in a good spot if you already have a good understanding of programming. I think the math is very important, but for the most part, it can be learned as you go. I usually recommend learning programming first because this allows you to apply the algorithms. This gives you a functional understanding of the math. Afterwards, you go back through and develop an understanding for the theory. I would go on kaggle.com and start doing projects where you apply the algorithms. For each algorithm you apply, I would go to the wikipedia and try to understand the math. The more you do this, the better understanding you will get of how it all works. I hope this helps!

Hey Ken. Thank you really for everything you share with us. I've started my journey in data science a couple months ago. I completed a bachelor's degree in statistics and I would like to convert into Data scientist. I have some questions for you and I thank you in advance for your answers. - with my statistician background, do you think I can be good enough to have a job in datascience? - I have completed datascience 365 bootcamp and I want to know ways to apply all the knowledge I got there. - how can I find a distance job in any company or enterprise, because in my home country it is quiet difficult since we don't have enterprises really needing it. Thanks a lot and I don't know if I can get your mail for further discussions. Thanks
@KenJee_ds
@KenJee_ds 4 года назад
Thanks for watching the video! I think you can break into data science with your background. However, it is very hard to get a data science job for anyone straight out of college. It may make more sense to start as a data analyst, data engineer, or software engineer for a few years before moving into a data science role. I recommend doing projects on kaggle.com to leverage what you learned in the 365 data science coursework. I think you should do your best to network as much as possible for positions. Also write a blog, publish work etc. It is difficult to get a remote job, but the best way to do it is by putting your work out there.

I would start with kaggle.com. I think that is the best place to start doing projects. If you want to go into BI, I would also recommend downloading Tableau and experimenting with creating visuals from data. You can go on tableau public and see what others have posted and you can also post your work there. Tableau should be free or pretty cheap for students. I hope this helps!

My best advice is to experiment with different things. Join clubs, get internships, and try to figure out what you like. You won't learn from sitting and thinking about it, you have to test different things out. I went through 6 different majors in school, I wouldn't have found one I enjoyed unless I took classes in them all. Same goes for my career, I tried many different things and ended up in data science. I hope this helps!

@@KenJee_ds Yes it does help, but shouldn't I have a sort of direction before applying willy nilly? I understand about the internships, and I've actively been thinking about it, but don't you need some sort of experience in the field before applying for an internship?. Also thank you for the reply.
@KenJee_ds
@KenJee_ds 4 года назад
So I recommend doing some prototyping with small projects in different areas. These can help you understand if you may be interested in a job or area. It can also serve as some experience that could help you land one of these internships. Designing your life (amzn.to/3850gX7) is a great book that I think would help you understand how life prototyping works better. I highly recommend if you are struggling to find what you want to do.
