Hey! I'm Alanna - a twenty-something documenting my life as a Canadian living in England.
I share the ups and downs of an expat living abroad and what it's really like living in the UK. It's not always easy, but there's been so many wonderful experiences, too. I post a RU-vid video every Tuesday and an additional video every Saturday on my Patreon account. I also livestream every Wednesday and Sunday at 6:30pm GMT on Twitch.

UK temp agencies are (almost) bottom of the barrel; no sick pay, no guarantee you'll be working from one week to the next. But I agree they can be a good way to get yourself noticed; you're there, you're sober, they need someone to fill a vacancy, your name comes up. BTW, some colleges can be the WORST employers. Big shiny buildings never guarantee a happy or safe environment - never hurts to talk to people who work there.

Since graduating from Uni in 2017 I've been doing some temp work here and there, and completed an internship with my local council. I've been feeling a bit down and overwhelmed by the process of getting my first 'real' job, but for some reason after watching this video something just clicked and I feel a renewed desire to hunt for that job. Thanks a bunch for this boost, it's really amazing world we live in when we can affect each others lives in such a way.

Lucky break ! What a blessing, something came to you, after so much striving, just at the right time and you proved yourself well to earn their respect and being bought out from the agency. No wonder youre so relaxed at work, you're a permanent employee with an office and privacy to do your side job of food tasting vids, loving it ! ;) so blessed

Great job Alanna! Very helpful video. I’m a dual national (Canadian and British citizenship) but yet I am still having a challenging time finding proper customer service work. I will look into a temp agency like office angels! I have been looking for work on and off since February of this year. So far I’ve only had two temp jobs at call centres.

So so different from when I was a School leaver. We simply looked in the Newspaper “Situations Vacant” column and applied, usually in writing for a job we fancied doing. Practically ALL jobs were learning ‘in post’. It was important to know something about the Company and what they did rather than “be qualified” before starting. The only jobs which were “exclusive” were professional jobs which required further education at a higher level; Teacher, Solicitor/Lawyer, Doctor, Dentist, Engineer, Architect etc. I worked for the Police for over 30 years as a Civilian and got a job I didn’t even apply for. I got it on recommendation, and stayed over 30 years.

If your, for example an accountant and want to apply for a role as an accountant in the UK then employers will expect you to have to give 3 months notice from your old employer anyway, so apply early and ask for an interview over Skype. That’s what my employer does for overseas applicants.

A good agency is wonderful, a bad one can be a horrible experience - I had one agency that got me a telephone interview - I then was told I was through to the second stage, and would need to attend a face-to-face interview, but the agency never told me where or when, and I lost out on the job... However, my current role was initially a six month fixed term contract, where I was "sourced" by the agency but employed directly by the employer, and I am now over 2 and a half years there, and permanent.

Yes, agencies are common in Australia, too. I have a journalism background, as well, but most of it was unpaid work. So I went back to university to study Marketing subjects and a Public Relations course. While studying, I had to apply for jobs so I could get social security payments. I applied through an agency Michael Page, for a PR job. They said that I wasn't successful, but they would hold onto my CV if anything suitable would come up in future. When I was trying to finish my final assignments, I got an email from Michael Page recruitment asking me if I would be interested in a marketing supervisor job with the Arts council. I said yes, and I just have to do a follow-up call with them. I'm in Melbourne, Australia, and I'm so surprised as we've been in lockdown since March! 😳

Private companies tend to be more personality (what you call informal) and they are fantastic because it feels much more natural. I've done plenty of these and they are definitely the best experience wise. The majority of jobs with large organisations, public services such as local government, central government etc are competency based. These are the most uncomfortable, off putting interviews but once you understand them they are easier. The interviewer will basically ask a pre agreed question designed to elicit the best of your knowledge, life experience and skills. They are uncomfortable because it is usually with a 3 person panel, taking turns to ask questions whilst the others score your answers. It's hard because you are extremely aware that they are scoring everything you say. Striking a balance between not waffling on but jot answering with the bare minimum is key. The best interviews are behavioural, which are kind of a contrast of the two plus some lateral thinking thrown in. Don't be surprised if you are asked questions such as "List now, in the space of a minute, how many uses of a paperclip you can think of" or "Tell me who you idealise or think of as a hero you would like to emulate and why". There is no right answer, this is their way of finding out who you are as a person or how you think on you feet.

Interviews are a numbers issue. I never take them too seriously which can be my downfall but that is fine. Agencies can be a help or a hindrance. I went to one recently and when I got there the job wasn't anything like they had said and I had taken a day off work for this. What a waste.

Thank you for your video! I was suspecting that Swap was linked with Britbound in London and you just confirmed it😉 Your video was very reassuring for me... even though I still need to go to Ottawa from Quebec city because they don't even take biometrics in my province (can you believe that we have offices in Quebec and Montreal but they can't take the biometrics😞) the other thing I find quite deceiving is that Swap and Britbound are only based in London, so if you want to live elsewhere you can't have their support. I would like to know if you think it's really worth it to be with Swap to help with the visa if you're not going to be able to have help from them once in the UK? I think Britbound have the possibility to just help with the visa...
@AdventuresAndNaps
@AdventuresAndNaps 6 лет назад
Good question! I was really anxious about the Tier 5 visa process so I think SWAP helped a lot with my peace of mind - they doublecheck everything, make sure you've submitted things properly, answer all your questions, etc. I think the money was worth it. I was also given access to their FB group (which I met friends through since not everyone with Swap ends up living in London) and given access to Britbound's FB group where I could post questions to other members. Britbound also helped me get my National Insurance number and answer any questions I have while living here. If you DO go the SWAP-route, just be aware that they are only London-based so all their events, hangouts, job help, parties, etc is about London. I kind of wish I knew that ahead of time. Overall I still think it was useful being with Swap/Britbound. Hope that helps!!

First of all you need to have a national insurance number you get off the government. all brits get them atomically at 16 so you need to apply for one or online or your best going to the job centre plus they will help you with everything you need getting you your ni number, getting a cv, seeing if your entitled to benefits till you get a job and it’s all free. Th trick to acing interviews? 1. Know the company and if possible the interviewer. 2. Don't apply for positions for which you aren't qualified since doing well requires confidence. 3. Honestly expressing sincerity about the position but internally understanding that you just don't care. I can see how you'd present very well. I'm always surprised to hear you say that you lack confidence or suffer high anxiety in any situation. I can't imagine why.

Since here in Germany we have 3 ways to graduate a hauptabschluss a real Abschluss and a Abi. And if we want to better our grades we can go to a "special school" that specializes on certain types like as an example kindergarten teacher or nurse or so on. And almost none of my friends and generell people here (around my area) gone to a college. So it's very different and still confuses me a lot

What usually matters most is your working background, if you already worked abroad or lived in the uk for a while, so they know yiu can actually communicate. Of course anything profession related, a multi national company for instance, or a college/university degree greatly helps if it can be applied to businesses in the uk

I live in the United states and I also have anxiety, but I will actually freeze sometimes if I don't understand the question and it turns into awkward silence. I first came over to England on a temporary Tier 5 working visa, then an unmarried spouse visa with my English boyfriend. I don't have permanent residency here and won't be eligible for awhile.

Adventures and Naps I find it crazy people very dissimilar to British people are granted residency at the drop of a hat. But a young lady like yourself is a "virtual Brit" lol. You have everything to blend in with our culture and contribute. But have to go through stupid hurdles in Britain 🤔 🤨

Not to disparage your qualifications, but if you were anywhere other than the South East of England, you would be lucky to get a job in McDonald's with a diploma in Journalism.

I live in the USA and would like to experience living and working in the UK. What do you need to work in the UK?
@AdventuresAndNaps
@AdventuresAndNaps 6 лет назад
The hardest thing is to get the appropriate working visa. I came over first on a Tier 5 Youth Mobility Scheme working visa but I don't believe it's available to Americans. First place to start is to find a visa that you're eligible for :) Good luck with everything!!
