I looked for an answer online and found the frozen paper towel trick. While waiting for the towels to freeze, I figured I would check out other solutions. Saw Kelly Galloup. I know that name. He knows stuff. So I watched, taped my two stuck rods, and had them apart before my paper towels were even frozen. I could have dealt with the Reddington Path staying stuck, but my T and T Contact II was concerning, as I'm moving 1000 miles next Thursday. Kelly, you're the man. I owe you big. Thanks for your vids and all you give to fly fishing.
Sir, this was as useful of a video as I have ever watched on RU-vid. You have my appreciation. My old 60's Heddon 2-piece can now be properly stowed away again.
Thank you so much, after hurting my finger almost cutting them, trying to get a curtain rod open I finally opened it with what you did....thanks a million Kelly.
I am simply floored and loving this. I just met up with an old buddy for fishing who hadn’t been able to take a rod apart for literally years. I told him that you (Kelly) had a solution. So we watched your video at his cabin after fishing, tried this trick and it worked like a charm. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much, I tried the using my legs method, ice method, took it to 3 fly shops, nobody could get it apart. So glad I found this video. Within 30 seconds my very stuck together rod came apart.
I am so impressed - this simple trick is at the same time so advanced because it only takes seconds to solve the problem. I have spent hours on my fly rod, but luckily I found this video. Thanks
This dude is lowkey a 5 head genius. Tried ice, behind the knee, 2man pull and 1 man wiggle with no luck. 1 piece of tape around my hand and sorted. What a legend.
I paused the video and went out to the garage and tried this trick on my soft bait rod that would not come apart. Wow that was so easy thanks for that, worked a treat
Just rescued a costly salmon rod which had languished in the shed for 4 years having given up hope of ever separating the top two sections.....still needed some effort but sorted in 30 seconds. Brilliant!
Crazy how incredibly effective this was. I had a rod that sat in the sun for multiple 85°+ days in the summer. I tried everything, and this was the only thing that worked. Absolutely incredible.
In boys scouts they taught us 2 things like 40 years ago...back when there were still metal ferrules being phased out...1) There is body oil (yuk?) on the sides of your nose...pre-lube the ferrule before install , lol. 2) IF stuck, put the rod (or "pole" if south of the mason dixon line) horizontally behind you knees. PLace your knees together . Grab the rod with your hands (also apply galloup double sticky tape ) press your hands apart using the power of your knees. If that doesn't work roll down the windows in your car, put one end of the rod in your car ......and go fishing with your new one piece rod! ;-)
Tonight, after 65 years of fly fishing, I learned the two most basic steps. How to put the rod together, and how to take it apart when stuck. Of course, I'm going to pretend I knew this all along. Even though i won't be giving you the credit in the future, for now, Thanks.
Tried this tip this morning for a last-minute trip to the Adirondacks. I used painter’s masking tape (the blue stuff). Plenty of grip, took the rod apart in seconds (after trying all morning) and the masking tape just comes off the rod without leaving a hint of adhesive. Thanks for the great tip!
Omg. I tried the 'cooling down' method, the 'knees' method, the '2 person' method and the 'rubber gloves' method for 6 HOURS this afternoon. Tape trick? 20 seconds - done. Game changer indeed!
I carry the drawer liner material cut into hand-sized squares (also used to line tool drawers) in my waders bag for grip when needed. But should that ever fail, I'll use TAPE! For getting off the residue, my wife taught me that a little baby oil does the trick for most adhesives; done it for years and works like a charm. I imagine that would be super safe on the rod finishes too! As a somewhat "newer" fly fisherman, I'd rather learn from a seasoned pro like you than just anyone so I truly appreciate information like this Kelly - thanks so much!
"I carry the drawer liner material cut into hand-sized squares" Yes, I have some squares of that stuff that is a little thinner and was sold to give you a better grip on jar lids. I bought a sheet of the stuff you are talking about to use when I wear out the stuff I'm using now. I'll be putting a couple squares in my vest as well .... thanks for reminding me. Take care.
I have had a 7 piece travel rod that has been unusable for the past couple of years because I couldn't separate two sections for travel. I have tried everything and nothing worked until this. Great hack. thanks for sharing.
OMG the top section of my fly rod has been stuck for days I have tried everything,, hot water,, cold water,, those gardening gloves with rubber dots on them, but then watched your video but like doubting Thomas I went to give it a try, using double sided carpet tape I applied it and without hardly any effort it came apart, I wish you could have seen the smile on my face…. Thanks 🙏
had an old Far & Fine that has been in my roof top rod carrier for about 2 years - maybe more. Stuck - HARD. Getting ready to head to a shop for help and turned to Kelly G. on the off chance there was a helpful video. BAM - rod unstuck though it was still a bit of a bitch getting it loose, wrapped with some painter's tape and BAM - Bob's your Uncle. Thanks Kelly -- will definitely stop in your shop next time up that way. Last time I was around there was a couple of decades ago - and I'm too old to wait that long. Thank You !
Why is it the most brilliant ideas are always the most simplist? Tried this on a rod that's been stuck for months and it popped right out! Thanks for sharing!
BRILLIANT TIP!! thought my week old scott radian was gonna be stuck forever, till i watched this! thank u so much for the advice….i’m forever in your debt sir!! 👌🏽
Kelly, I recently had one of my fly rods stuck. I used the freeze method and it worked. I put ice into 2 plastic sandwich bags and placed the ferral section between the 2 ice bags. After about 45 minutes I was able to pull the sections apart.
I tried this and it worked so easily it was like someone had freed it before I tried. Took ages to get the duct tape off though, but thanks for a great tip.
Thanks for this tip Kelly!! I have been flyfishing for close To 45 years and have NEVER got a Rod as stuck as I got my Redington CPX this weekend. Tried ice, heat, two person cross hand, and even the behind the knees, this finally did the trick, had to twist like a madman, but I got it, thanks a TON!!
Wow, how simple is THAT? Best thing I've learned this YEAR! I did ice packs in baggies once and got one apart but it might have only been a placebo effect. Thanks for the great info.
This is the only method that actually worked for us.The two person grab is a waste of time and so is the leg method. None of the other ones help fix the slippery grip you have on the rod. Kelly Gallup always knows what he is talking about!
Thanks for the knowledge I just got my 8wt apart for the first time in 5 years of inshore fishing. Worked exactly like in the video. Now back to my regularly scheduled beverage.
Thank you Kelly. Tons of comments here on other ways that work but this one works for sure. I have neoprene wraps for securing my 4 piece rods when they're broken down in 2 pieces. The rods, like what you said some of your guides do, stay as 2 piece rods all season long. The top 2 sections of one of my rods were stuck together and even using the neoprene wraps as grippers I couldn't get the sections to come apart and it felt like I had a good grip on the sections and was putting a lot of force to the ferruled joint. I felt like I could ruin the rod if I tried even harder so I stopped and searched on-line for techniques, saw that you had a video so I fired it up and watched it. One thing that is consistent with your videos is there's a bit of yada yada yada (just like this comment :o) but I enjoy that part of your videos as I know the entrée is well worth it while munching on the hors d'oeuvres. I grabbed my duct tape and tried your method. I had to twist both ways and it was really tight but it came free and I didn't have to have a death grip on the rod sections. Thank you for the video Kelly. I used some high quality duct tape and ended up with quite a bit of tape residue but some WD40 on a rag worked great to safely clean the rod sections quickly.
Thanks Kelly, had a nice sage 4wt that was stuck for a couple years, used this method and it was still a bit of a struggle but it came a part and did not ruin my Sage. Nice tip.😊
Thanks so much for the tip...already had put my wet paper towel in the freezer from other how to’s on RU-vid. Using your method mine came apart with no effort.
This is AWESOME! I have been trying that stupid ice gimmick and putting the rod behind your legs and every other so called method to get your rod apart. This brought a tear to my eye when the rod came apart so easily. I have broke 2 rods in the past trying to get them apart. I am so glad I found this. Thank you thank you thank you.
Thank you soooooo much💖💖💖 My favorite Okuma telescopic rod was stuck. Tried it all; warm, cold, rubber strap, oil.....etc. Finally got it open with your trick. Fantastic, I'm so happy now🥰🥰🥰😀😀😁😁
I was in near panic mode when my classic sage 3-piece spey rod butt section was stuck, but I remembered seeing a video on your channel while watching your fly-tying tutorials. It took a bit of patience as it was really stuck, but it worked like a charm. Thanks man. and for all your hard work, thank you Kelly. I really enjoy your channel and have learned a lot of really good fly-tying techniques
Great tip! I’ve always found that using a frozen bag of peas, or similar, wrapped round the stuck ferrule for a few minutes, and then using a strip of neoprene wrapped round on each side of the ferrule to get a grip, then twist in opposing directions and it comes apart! I worked as a Ghillie for some time and this always worked. A frozen bag of peas is not always available on the river bank, so your tip looks invaluable.
