After having taught at Robert College in Istanbul and Tarsus American College for a combined total of a decade, I've gained valuable insights into the world of teaching in Turkey.
If you've ever thought about working here as a teacher, this video will give you an overview of how to get a job at a school here. I'll also go over what to look for and what to look out for.
Then, head over to my website and check out my FREE worksheet, 10 Things You Need to Know Before Moving to Turkey: cecilepopp.com/...
Maybe this'll be your year!

I was actually just given a chance to teach at a university in Istanbul. It's a big change (I'm in Japan) but it is an exciting opportunity I think. I spent a week there many years ago, and loved the vibe. I won't be going for the money though - while the benefits are good, they pay in Lira : /

Hi Cecile. Hope you and your family are keeping healthy during this pandemic. I am a Btech graduate with 5 yrs of work experience in IT. I am on a career break since the birth of my first born. During this time, I did MSc psychology out of interest. In Sha Allah, we plan to relocate to Turkey owing to my husband's job. I have good command over English language and hope to make a career out of it. I have been pondering about TEFL. With my qualifications, is it possible for me to land a teaching job in Turkey? Be it for children or adults. Is it worth to invest on a TEFL course provided my education?

Hi Sabeena, what an exciting prospect! You will most likely easily find a job teaching English; the more important question is whether it will be a legal one (i.e. one that gets you a work permit, pays social security (SGK), and pays you a fair salary). My advice is to find out specifically what the MEB (Ministry of Education) requirements are for working in a k-12 school; and what the YÖK requirements are for working in a university. These change, so I cannot give you guaranteed information. Alternatively, contact potential employers and perhaps their HR dept. can help you. Typically, you need 3 things: proof of English competence (eg TOEFL), teaching qualifications, and a university education. But again, depending on the type of teaching job you want, those teaching qualifications will vary. Hope this helps!

How do you rank Istanbul vs Ankara? What is a better place to live with a higher quality of life?
@FromCanadatoAdana
@FromCanadatoAdana 3 года назад
Great question, McWhiffles! Since I've only ever visited Ankara and haven't lived there, I can't really say. But my impression is that Ankara is similar to other capital cities -- lots of government employees, generally orderly, has good cultural and educational offerings ... But lacking the "grit" of the truly exciting big cities of the world. I know this is how many people feel about Ottawa, Bonn (formerly, when it was Germany's capital) ... So whether those are positives or negatives, really depends on the individual.

Hi Cecile. Thanks for the great content. I have a question that you may be able to answer since you are a teacher in Turkey. My wife and I are both Australian citizens, but English is our second language. we are considering moving to Turkey permanently, and we'd like to enrol our kids in an English school. My questions are: Are all teachers in English schools native speakers? Is the whole school environment English-speaking or partly Turkish partly English? I'd like my kids to get fully immersed in English so they learn it like natives. How much roughly do these schools charge per year? Cheers,
@FromCanadatoAdana
@FromCanadatoAdana 3 года назад
Hi Maz, great questions. I assume you are teachers? Non-native English speakers can certainly work in Turkish schools, but the work visa requirements may vary in terms of qualifications ... So I'd recommend you contact prospective employers first. Requirements can also change depending on what you teach -- elementary, middle or high school (or university); math, science, IB ... or English. The only fully English schools are international schools; Turkish schools that have an intensive English program will still be Turkish environments with no English spoken on the playground or in the hallways. School fees change from school to school, but here are the links to two fully English schools' fees: The British School in Istanbul www.bis.k12.tr/2021-2022-academic-year or IICS (Istanbul International Community School) awww.iics.k12.tr/tuition-fees/ Good luck!

If you're looking for a job you'll probably find one; the question would be whether the package is one you'd be happy with as salaries won't be comparable to Canadian ones. Perhaps contact some universities directly or look for postings on LinkedIn to get a better idea? Hope this helps.

I have a question, I have been teaching in Japan for 8 years now and I'll be getting my CELTA this summer. Currently, I'm an instructor of English at a private school and focus on teaching conversation, writing, reading comprehension, and occasionally grammar. However, my bachelor is in Art and Design. Could I still get a decent job teaching English in Turkey? Thank you in advance for the information. :)

I'd suggest you join an international recruiting agency (I used Search Associates and would recommend them). Then, you can see specific schools' job postings with requirements. They will be in accordance with the latest Ministry of Education requirements. Hope this helps.

Hello Mehreen, great questions! It really depends on where you want to work -- at a university in their English language prep year? In a K-12 school or in a language school. Since requirements change all the time, I suggest you contact potential employers and speak to them directly about the requirements of their governing bodies. Best of luck!! :-)
