So in a nutshell, you are basically telling people to practice like you are working for a company. By collaborating with someone, using version control and so on, all while still learning to code. Not bad advice tbh, that’ll make someone more prepared than most new grads

@@icodestuff6241 Please learn to read because that's also necessary to be good in software engineering, I said " ... even without using Google or using it less...". I'm one of those that write answers that you find in Google, google is a tool and a good one, but if you can't solve anything without using Google or you can't write a line of code without Google, you are not a software engineer, you are just a human being that happens to be able to write some code or just copy paste it and check if it works. BTW, your are assuming 💩 because I'm 39 and I have 20+ years of software development experience, and I worked for in big companies in America, Europe and Asia, since the time when all the answers weren't in google.

Just got an offer after 1 year of self taught developing while finishing an unrelated degree. I had one intro to computer science class under my belt and learned Javascript, Node, and other relevant frameworks. I coded an average of approx. 2 hours a day. Been working on leetcode problems the past month+ but thank god my employer didn't require any coding problems because they understands they're more to test college grads and not actually testing practical skills/experience lol. Also made my own full-stack SaaS which was already generating revenue which is what got them interested in me despite not having a CS degree.

The advice to build something for someone and then work with them to keep refining the product weekly is excellent advice and a practical skill to start developing for new programmers! It'll also start highlighting poor design work and poor architecture (or good design work and good architecture) which in turn will start teaching the importance of writing maintainable, scalable code and set people on the path to becoming software engineers and not just coders!

@@neryskkiran1820 everyone thinks the layoffs are about ChatGPT except they're not. The layoffs have more to do with economics and the end of "cheap money" because interest rates have gone from ~0% to ~5% which makes money more expensive to borrow plus current debts incur higher rates of interest. Also, stock values of tech companies have plunged which unnerved investors on VCs o Wall Street, and layoffs unfortunately increase profitability and appease investors. Furthermore, most tech companies set-on far too many employees in 2020-2021 while riding the pandemic tech boom, which ultimately didn't last as they anticipated it would. Essentially, there's way more to it than ChatGTP. That's just a common assumption. The A.I. is also likely to be now reaching a plateau phase, so improvements after GPT-4 will be small.

Being good helps in convincing interviewer that you are fit for a job. But one step that is also hard to overcome is to even get an interview. To do that try to cash in on your projects. What I mean is, don't just put them in the drawer. Make blogs, youtube videos, open source your project, host it somewhere, etc. In short, make things that could be shown to recruiter, then mention them in your CV. It's especially important if you don't have relevant experience and education. Your CV should be filled up with things like courses and projects.

It's important to focus on improving your CS skills, programming skills, rather than comparing yourself against top 1% software engineers. Also there is literally no way to determine how good they are. While mastering the fundamentals of computer science is important, it's not enough to outperform the majority of software engineers (probably not even the top 50% ), let alone be ahead of 99% There are SWE who skip promotions to just stay as SWE, they live and breath code. You can't compete with top 1% devs just because you learnt a few basics of CS unfortunately it's not that easy. Kudos to you for reading a CS book, but there's a lot more :)
