One way to make sure that you’re sanding the entire surface, is to spray it with a light coat of water based spot trace. That’s from my yacht painting days. It forces you to sand everything, whether you want to or not. A rigid sponge sanding block is good too. BTW, you do excellent work!

Thanks Tom. In auto painting they use something similar called a guide coat. It’s usually used for leveling off primer etc before painting.

The sand and polish is my favourite part 👀. I's nice to hear someone who knows what they're talking about. There's so much bad advice around painting and finishing in general. Watch that mic lol. I always use water. No need to make things wet enough that water is running into holes, and I hate dust everywhere (I guess I prefer mud everywhere 😂). Right edges. Paint pools on flats, so it creeps away from edges. On top of that, edges are naturally going to get a lot more pressure from sanding than distributed pressure over flat areas.
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 3 года назад
Ya, I hear way too many people saying they have sanded through their finishes and it’s almost always on edges unfortunately.

Brad...It looks like Mr. Toast has called you out. I’m sure you have seen his response to your trash talk video. I may have misunderstood what he was trying to say in his response, but it sounded like he was asking you to come down and teach him how to use his Iwata as good as you are able to use a rattle can...and fix his hair? I can’t be sure. No one has built anything yet and I’m already loving this. Can’t wait to see what’s next.

Hi Brad, I know you read your messages and you don't have to respond but I wanted to say to you THANK YOU ! 2k is the best clear ever for amateur painters, The results on my bass were awesome and didn't even polished it, I left it as is and it perfect(near perfect but Budget wise it wise perfect). I follow every steps of your video and I did my way for one step and it was a pain in the ass, I filled ash wood with Varathane floor varnish and it took me like 20 coats and in some place it wasn't filled enough. But the last step is the best, and that product is a kick ass product(you should have some cash reward) from spray max. All in all, I did a pro job for around 175 $ canadian. If any viewers have questions you can ask me too lol, I've watch all videos and I still have my sheets that I handwrote for number of coats and drying times for each steps(sealing-priming-painting-Clearing). This video has put me off the idea of spraying my own guitar, and I now have a better appreciation for why finished bodies cost what they do. I could handle the spraying well enough I think, but the sanding and polishing looks hard, and seems to require way more equipment that I am prepared to buy. Impressive finish though and I love that colour!

Brad, quick question.... I’m following this procedure exactly (grey sandable primer>duplicolor>spray maxx 2k) Do I have to use a sanding sealer on the bare wood body if I’m going to use sandable primer ? I have a kit guitar with bare wood and I did a test piece yesterday and it came out pretty nice but I’m worried about putting the primer straight to bare 🪵 wood over time as people on forums say it could soak into the wood eventually and ruin my finish. Your advice would be greatly appreciated!

You don’t need to use duplicolor. That’s just what I chose for the color.

Hi Brad, are there any issues with polishing with a random orbital sander as opposed to a dedicated polisher?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove Год назад
It depends on how hard the clear coat is. I’ve certainly done it; it can just take longer with hard clear coats.

You don’t sand or polish where the pick guard is?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 2 года назад
You do if you’re doing an actual guitar finish and not just a test/tutorial

Hi! Great video. Today i made 3 layer of 2K spray max, and i would like to ask you how days should i wait until i set up the guitar body? Thank you!
@BradAngove
@BradAngove Год назад
If you’re going to sand and polish, do it within 1-2 days. I would wait a week to set it up, but technically you should be able to after about 1-2 days as well.

Question Brad? Can you paint the body and pickguard with the same paint? Would love to see a tutorial on that.

Have a look at my tutorial on how to paint plastic parts properly. Aside from the steps outlined in that video, yes you can paint a guard with the same stuff

Brad, do you use the wax and grease remover on the body after buffing with 1200, 2500, and 4000 before moving on to polishing?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove Год назад
I do. Just to make sure there are no contaminants to mess with the polishing.

Hey Brad-Question about the 2k. After 24 hours i followed this cutting schedule:800, 1000, 1500, 2000, 2500, compound and buffed. Guitar was glassy smooth and glossy like a factory finish. However up close i could still see all the scrstches from the sanding. Did i cut/buff too soon? Didnt keep paper clean enough? What do you think I did wrong? Or what would you recommend?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 7 месяцев назад
I can only guess, but I would think you either didn’t remove all the 800 grit scratches or you had some contamination on your sandpaper that left scratches.

Hey Brad I know this is an old video but I noticed on your other painting with duplicolor videos you sanded the final coat of primer with 400 grit. Did you sand this one’s primer and paint? Love your videos, thanks!
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 8 месяцев назад
I sanded the primer on this one I believe, but not the paint because it’s metallic. You could add an acrylic lacquer mid-coat clear and then sand that before the 2K.

Hello Brad. The polisher that you are actually using in this video is air powered. Could you share the model. I find my air powder sander doesn't turn enough as it's random orbit and hangs up. I ended up using my Milwaukee drill with the polishing head on and it worked fine but I'd like to invest in something for the compressor.
@BradAngove

I think it’s a proto, but I sometimes use my dynabrade sander turned all the way up. If you’ve got a setup where you can use both hands porter and cable makes a nice electric one too. I have a few options in the amazon link in the description.

I would offer a warning that if you're going to wet sand, DO NOT use a wooden sanding block .. its shape can distort if the wood gets wet and create big problems. Don't ask how I know this .. :)
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 3 года назад
That’s the same reason I generally don’t wet sand guitars.

Hi Brad. Im building a bass from scratch my son. Used nitrocellulose lacquer. Do you think I could put 2k clear coat over it? Or would there be a chemical reaction?

It isn’t recommended, but I have done it successfully more than once.

Has anyone used the spraymax 2k to cover a waterslide decal? Any advice on this? I was thinking of using this to clear coat the front of a headstock.

I actually used the 2K clear coat to cover two different Ibanez decals on my headstocks. It works really well. I did 3 coats.

Hello Brad, i've put 3 coats of spraymax 2k on my guitar and waiting for it to dry 24+ hours. Due to vinyl stickers under the clear coat, plus some orange peel it's obvious that i'll need a thicker clear coat. My question is up to what grip do i need to sand the first 3 coats before i apply another 3 on top of that? AND if i sand the first 3 coats won't those sanding scratches be visible through the future upper layers ?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 2 года назад
I’d go 800 grit. Those scratches won’t be visible. See my video on how to build a thick coat of clear.

@@BradAngove Thanx for the reply, i forgot to ask, this sanding between clear coats we're talking about is for leveling? OR it's for better grip for the next clear coat? *i've seen this video you suggested 20 times :)

For adhesion mostly.

Is it hard to clean a paint gun after duplicolor? Just mineral spirits is ok for that? I usually use my paint sprayer with nitro, and that's easy to clean with lacquer thinner.

Hey Brad! I have a few questions. I'm using Rustoleum 2X for color. How long should I wait to spray the 2K clear? And what temperature/humidity would be best to spray in?
@BradAngove
@BradAngove 3 года назад
I give it a week or two before spraying the clear. Standard room temperature is fine. Warmer is better. And the lower the humidity the better.
