You don't have to depart IFR when you file an instrument flight. If the weather is nice, you can depart VFR, have a bit more freedom in navigation, and then activate or pick up your IFR clearance while enroute.
This video shows you how it's done, including the IFR communication to use when doing so. It also shows how to get what's known as a "Pop Up" IFR, for when you don't have a flight plan on file and weather turn south.

The sequel, thanks for posting. An addition would be mentioning that your IFR flight plan is ONLY accepted after you received your clearance and read back, NOT for instance when you receive a squawk code.

Great Video. I flew into Tampa Executive not too long ago and had to ask for a Pop Up IFR. The first thing the controller asked me was "Is your aircraft IFR equipped and is the Pilot In Command IFR certified?"

no but that's a good idea. A lot of places have their own requirements for asking for practice approaches, and sometimes you may need B or C airspace clearance to make the minimum altitudes required. Thanks for the idea!

To get a pop-up ifr in weather conditions shown here, should you have climbed vfr to 4000 before entering the clouds and then requested the pop up ifr? Or can you climb while flying in circles to get to the altitude before going ifr?

If ATC denies you a pop up clearance, can you switch to flight service, ask for a clearance or flight plan, and then go back to ATC? And will they HAVE to accept you?

Look for the name of the chart at the top right corner of the chart supplement for your airport. For example, airport M25 lists low altitude enroute chart L-16.

I really appreciate these videos you make! I fly around NW Florida and have attempted to request a "pop-up" clearance by first filing with flight service. I was too unfamiliar with the ICAO codes they requested and ended up fumbling a bit.... Hoping to give it another shot soon because this is a great tool to have.

Why contact Roswell Approach for the clearance when you are departing that area? Why not contact Roswell Departure. I'm just starting IFR ground school so lots to learn, find your videos fantastic!

So you stated that when requesting a pop-up IFR the controller will ask if you “pilot” and the plane are IFR rated and current.. is this always the case? I watched a Air safety video where a non IFR pilot accepted an IFR flight plan and controller said nothing? I'm a controller and we usually don't ask if a pilot is requesting an ifr clearance, we assume that you know what you're qualified for. The times we are definitely going to ask is if you're VFR and start encountering IMC that way we can just give you an ifr clearance and don't have to declare an emergency.
