Rusty, I've been playing guitar for almost 40 years. As a teenager, I wanted to play like Van Halen and Randy Rhoads and that's what I focused on. I learned to fly up and down the fretboard with diatonic minor scales, speed picking, string skipping, tapping, etc. I developed a fast right hand, a nice wide vibrato, and could do covers of some pretty difficult solos. But I always felt like an amateur under all the flashy stuff. And finding your channel just last week has shown me what was missing, explained in the best way possible. In the beginning, I wanted to walk before I could crawl, and blew past essential fundamentals. Watching your videos has opened doors and made my playing sound more melodic and purposeful. You've made guitar playing fun and exciting for me again. This is a great lesson here, and I can't wait for the next one. Thanks so much, man.

Wait....Practice? Noooooo. That was the answer all along? : - ). Kidding aside, another great lesson Rusty. This is exactly what I've been doing the last month or two. I play every chord all over the neck, both major and minor (better with majors right now) then play the notes around those chords to make it flow, including slides, bends and pull offs. I then take a chord progression, starting with the open position then move up neck with each new inversion of the progression. Funny thing, I can see those inversions/triads and my fingers know how to find them more easily. And yep, I practice them for a couple of hours each night. Thanks Rusty, you are a great teacher. I always look forward to your lessons, including your worship channel as well.👍👍👍

Great lesson Rusty.........since I started learning to play lead using chord tones my playing has dramatically improved it really is the way to go...........as a long time noodler( probably 20 years) I thought when I went down this path that it would take a long time........but the reality is it only took me months to get.......the thing is because I already knew how to bend ...slide in to notes hammer on and pull off I learned the chord tone stuff at a geometric rate....... big thanks Paul from Ireland
@rustysguitar1

Awesome Paul! This is an exciting comment. It was the same way for me. Once I got some of the triads and chord tones under my fingers, I moved forward quickly. Great lesson as always … this is exactly where I am at trying to connect the dots better . shapes are key and I already get that for some people like me , there is a little math involved with intervals etc and when I see the root in different places, it’s starting to unfold

@@rustysguitar1 well you did a great job showing and explaining in this video … there’s a big temptation for a beginner guitarplayer to noodle , if that’s the phrase and you know what I mean … instead of getting a solid melody out of the chords … the power of this all you learn later on , it makes guitar playing more meaningful and intense

As always, another great lesson Rusty. Guess you’ve been playing a long time to get so good. I’m nearly 73 and been playing 4 years. Don’t think I’ll ever reach your level but I practice nearly every day. Thanks. And 100k very soon.

Hey Scooby, I appreciate you taking the time to watch my lessons buddy! I have been playing since I was a teenager. I enjoy it more now than I ever have though. I hope we can keep working on this stuff together. I know you’re improving. I can hear it in your comments. And yes, the channels growing. Very exciting. Hope you have a rockin weekend my friend.👍

Such great lessons, especially for beginners and intermediate players! Helps a lot, thanks Rusty. I’m having challenge being able to know where all the notes are to be able to move between chord changes. I guess it’ll come with time and practice.

Knowing the fretboard is very important. That will give you confidence when improvising for sure you don’t even have to have a guitar in your hands to learn the fretboard. Just try to think about the notes during the day a small group of notes and they will start connecting for you. Thanks for checking out my lessons. Have a great weekend.👍
