I specifically tuned the bass on this video around the 251hz range, which is where the lows in my voice are. I also cranked them a few db higher than normal. Why? To see who here has their own bass and subwoofers tuned too high. SO, if you said "Its too bassy!!!" You only exposed that your own sound systems are out of tune.

look jay, even on a 800€ monitoring system in a audio treated room, the voice is a little too bassy :) that mic is better suited for female voices, but -3db on the bass knob should do you well.. if you want to step up your audio quality even more, put a nice de-esser, a soft compressor and a limiter on the input while your recording (via software), so you'll have a nice and consistent audio track.. or if you want more of that "warm radio announcer voice" you can try a multiband compressor (most of them already have a radio voice preset)

Thank you so much! I've been struggling with the noise floor on my Alesis Multimix 8USBFX for months. I watched this and was immediately dismissive because the product was another Alesis mixer - but kept watching because I know you have high quality audio. Turns out, all I needed to do was lower the gain in Windows.

i think the audio was better with the smartlav, that's just my opinion. it's possible to plug the smartlav into the mic jack on your computer and just capture it with audacity correct?
@Jayztwocents
@Jayztwocents 10 лет назад
The pinout on the 3.5mm jack for the Smartlav is specific to the smartphone layout (3 pin style) If there is some sort of adapter, then it may work
@Ubuntuaddicted
@Ubuntuaddicted 10 лет назад
***** i think there's 3 pins like that because the port on the iphone is for a mic as well as headphones. 1 pin is for mic, 1 pin for left audio and 1 pin for right audio. i'm just guessing though, only way to find out is if you could try for us to just plug it into a mic or line-in port on your computer and see if audacity picks up audio from it.
@Jayztwocents
@Jayztwocents 10 лет назад
Ubu the Tech Guru It doesnt work on the PC, camera or Zoom. I tried that a long time ago, I should have been more clear in my first comment. The pin locations on the 3.5mm are in fact very different than standard mic.

It's a dynamic mic which means direct USB is not going to give you any decent levels without tons of noise. An inexpensive pre-amp (ART makes some) then 1/4-inch to 1/8-inch adapter direct to the computer would be a better solution than straight USB. That Alesis Mix4 though is my travel mixer and it worked great. Recently decided to go with a multi-track solution (4 separate channels) via a Personus 44VSL audio interface direct to Studio One DAW

The bass is too damn high!!! its just going to make it very tiring to listen to your voice especially in longer videos, its not as bad as if it was very high pitch because then it would just be painful but this is just too far to the other extreme, much preferable to have the tone set to a natural level imo.
@Jayztwocents
@Jayztwocents 10 лет назад
Nope, your subwoofer is too damn high. My bass HZ is cut, and enhanced around 251hz. Perhaps turn down your own bass.
@RWoody1995
@RWoody1995 10 лет назад
nope, I have my subwoofer turned right down actually (so as not to annoy the neighbors) and could do with being turned up really and I have my audio settings at the default flat requency response, no extra bass being added in anywhere, anything else I listen to sounds perfectly natural to me except for the part of this video where you use the new audio setup, you are going to say to me that professionally produced movies, tv shows, music and games have their audio setup wrong and only you have it set up correctly?

I used this exact same mixer for my music recordings (both RU-vid covers and original songs). It works great for recording music too. I used the same set up -USB plug into my computer using Audacity. It works great for recording vocals, bass, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, and keyboard synthesizer. The only instrument I had trouble with recording was violin. Unfortunately, it got stolen, so I'm looking into new options for my videos and original recordings now.

damn Jay, I've once again found one of your older vids incredibly helpful! I have a boom and a BM 800 on the way to try and clean up my sound over TeamSpeak, and while I was thinking of ordering a phantom power adapter, this particular unit might be better suited to me :-) the only thing that worries me about a usb or external soundcard though, is the thought of losing the acoustic echo cancelation from my integrated Realtek HD.

If you want to get decent sound quality for a cheap price a good all in one mic is the "Blue Snowball", its USB and only costs £50 or something like $70 - $80 in the US, but yeah its a good mic, all you need is a pop filter to go with it.
@iburley_
@iburley_ 10 лет назад
That setup sounds absolutely fantastic, but that noise floor has me seriously worried. That's subject to vary by unit, so if somebody got one that's slightly higher, being that you're at 7/100 Windows input volume right now, they may not be able to turn it down low enough to conceal it. Possibly worth the risk at this price and with Amazon's amazing return policy, but still, it has me worried. I've recently been looking into the Focusrite Scarlett 2i2, mostly as a headphone amp but also to open the option in the future of using an XLR microphone. I will say though, that it doesn't have the settings for the amount of bass or treble like that mixer does, it's strictly an audio interface. With the price of that mic, I may end up needing a setup for this sooner than expected! That's crazy! Just wonder if there's anything better for not a marginal increase in cost.

If you're using a mixer, you don't need a USB model. You can pipe the stereo output into the 3.5mm line input, NOT the mic input. Line Inputs are inherently very clean because they don't go through your cheap preamp in the mic input. The USB mixer you recommended is discontinued and the newer model is $99. In my experience the 4-channel or 6-channel Alto mixer is only $49 and $69. It doesn't have the problem of excessive volume levels. The Behringer Xm8500 dynamic mic is only $20 and sounds superb. You can also find lapel mics for $12 on Amazon that are just as good and they can even be found for $3.50 on Aliexpress.

I don't know how it's quality compares but behringer has a similarly priced and similarly featured mixer that also integrates a compressor on its mic channel. Well I will know soon enough once I get my desk set up because I bought one to drive a condenser mic that I'll be using when I launch my channel soon. :). Thanks for the pointers.

I got this mixer on amazon, and it makes me sound like I’m on a old style radio show. I guess it could work in some way for what my wife are trying to do. Do you know how I can make it sound more natural? Rather than a old radio show? Also, there’s also a lot of hiss in my headphones.

I have the AT2020 XLR Model passed to a phantom then outputing to USB and the quality seems OK to me but could be better. That is on my Main channel without the 2 at the end. The clap to sync though is something I never thought of. That I will be using now in my Vlogs and Reviews. Thank you.

I have the Multimix4. It worked great at first, but then after about a year or so, it developed this terrible hiss that refused to go away. Then as time went on, the hissing got louder and louder until it was virtually unusable since the hissing itself couldn't be completely removed in post without greatly reducing the quality of the recording. Upon a quick youtube and google search, it seems to be a common problem among the entire Alesis Multimix line, particularly due to their use of faulty capacitors. Unless you're good with electronics, my advice is if you're gonna get it is to get it with a good 2-3 year warranty, or just forgo it altogether and buy a proper audio interface instead. If you really need a starter usb mixer at this price point, try going with the Behringer Xenyx as they seem to have a better track record, not to mention the q802 has more features than the multimix4 for about the same price (or even cheaper depending on where you look).
