I haven’t received my SOE yet from FLDOE, but when I applied on my school district website for a teacher position I received an email that said I met the minimum requirements. I already had a principal reach out and I did a quick phone interview with them. Can you help to explain this?
Yes. So Florida is desperate for teachers and if they see that you have a bachelor's degree in anything they will give you an interview. You don't need to be a certified teacher to begin teaching in Florida. If you'd like to talk more about this, you can email me at Lauren.McTurk@gmail.com
GOOD NIGHT MRS LAU. I HAVE AN ACADEMY, HERE I GAVE ENGLISH & SPANISH. I AM TEACHING OF CASTELLANO & ENGLISH. CAN I WORK IN FLORIDA TEACHING CASTELLANO. MY SCHOOL IS IF'QUEI'FAY, THAT IS ENGLISH FOR CHILDREN AND FOR YOU. IT'S IN VENEZUELA.
I had professional certification in leadership, ESOL and English 6-12. They expired in 2010. Do I have to take tests to renew them. I don't mind I just don't want to take any courses. I was teaching overseas for 17 years?
@@LearningWithLau thanks for your reply. I was told that I need to take courses since my professional certification expired more than 5 years. Please let me know if you know about the process
This video was SOOOO helpful!!! Thank you. I am from NY and FL has so different when it comes to all this certification talk. I feel so lost and confused..lol, I just applied for a school counseling position here in FL but I have my Master's in Social Work. In NY it's kind of the same degree but not here. I went on an interview here and was offered the position. I have been so excited until HR contacted me with all these specifics that they need which has me so confused. Your video has helped me more than speaking to anyone I have about this situation and my next steps. I am also glad you mentioned going on that interview even if I am not certified yet (here), as that is exactly what I did and they offered me the position on the spot. Now I am trying to navigate through the FL DOE website but it's so confusing I have tried to contact them but the lines are busy and they have not responded to my email. I submitted the application online and paid the fee but I don't feel so sure of myself that I chose the right section there being it was so confusing :(
Hello! Thank you so much for watching and for your feedback! I'm glad I could help. It is definitely a confusing process. Please let me know if you need help with anything else and I will do my best. You can also reach me via email: MsMcTurk@gmail.com
@@SaudiTravelsWithAndrew Oh wow! That's quite a change. Good for you! It takes a lot to switch careers, but you need to go after what makes you happy! :) Will you be teaching Social Studies?
@@LearningWithLau Thanks! I really hope to have lots of fun with clubs and maybe sports! I will be teaching English because there is a big need for that in Miami :-)
Thanks so much for this video! I currently love here in Orange County, fl and work at Disney right now. Just graduated this past fall from UF and just started the application process for OCPS and Osceola! This video was so helpful and encouraging! Wish me luck ❤️
Hello Reagan! Thanks so much for watching. Woo! Congratulations on graduating. :) My boyfriend and I love Disney! We go all the time. Let me know if you need help with anything else regarding the hiring process. Good luck to you!! :)
Hello William! Thanks for watching. My boyfriend and I are big Disney fans, we love the warm weather, and decided that we needed a change. Who know's where we will end up in a few years, but for now, we love living in Florida...despite the low teacher pay.
@@oluwakemioyebanji6535 Georgia for example. You can be paid significantly more for obtaining higher levels of education. The retirement plan is much better than Florida.
I am a career changer, so this is my first time diving into formal education. I got my certificate of eligibility and am subbing in my district already. My timing may be off, but I am having some trouble getting contacted about jobs. I have applied to all the ones in my subject area, but have not been able to hear back from any of the schools. I reached out to a few of the principals and department heads, but have not had much luck with that either. Any advice about hearing back from schools or getting a job?
Hello Gabe! Thanks so much for watching. Great question! Where are you applying for schools and what is your subject area? Also, April is a busy month with a lot of districts as they are preparing for state and local testing. During the end of the school year (May/June) and towards the end of summer (July/August) are going to be the hot times for teaching job openings. I would be happy to look at your resume and/or cover letter to offer suggestions. I could also share my template for emailing principals if that is something you're interested in as well. You can send me an email at LearningWLau@gmail.com I wish you the best of luck. Happy Teaching! :)
OMG, I went onto the website before finding this video and I was Overwhelm and then information overload 😵💫 I'm saying to say, This video was on point, informative as well as the direct information you provided was a bonus. Thank you so much. I live in Orlando and I am now a Substitute Teacher. I love it so far, and I have thinking if I should find a career in teaching. I'm coming from a Tech Background (BS in Information Technology Management ) but I was never lucky enough to find an ideal job due to lack of experience. Therefore, I am thinking of this path. I just said a lot here, lol, what do you recommend? and thanks again
PEOPLE, PLEASE check cost of living vs. salary! I assumed Florida would be cheaper than Vegas but the pay AND rent/cost of living were WORSE!!! (I was in Jacksonville.) Stay AWAY from Duval-pretty much anywhere else is better though! Even the county south of Duval pays better. On a funny note, dear speaker… You can always tell if someone is a native Floridian vs a snowbird by the way you say the name of the state 😂. Natives say “Flohr-ih-duh,” while northerners say “Flahrida” 😆. That said, it was definitely less noticeable after the intro, and I’m glad you are bringing attention to the Sunshine State! I had a terrible experience in Duval County because they refused to pay my grad degree stipend since the transcript said the name of the department (Curriculum & Instruction) instead of the literal word “English.” I made LESS in Jacksonville after 8 years of teaching with a grad degree than I made as a FIRST YEAR teacher in Las Vegas, NV! 😭 I teach in China and make a lot more now than I ever did in the States, but did see online that salaries were better in central and south Florida, and other districts seemed far less vindictive; I don’t know any other word for it. Several teachers I knew completed a grad degree IN FLORIDA, only to be told by Duval that their degrees didn’t qualify for the same inane kinds of reason I was told 😳. (I’ve taught at many schools over a 15-year career and ONLY Duval ever had an issue 🤯.) I also would have lost my license and job if I didn’t take 18 hours of PD in my second year in Jacksonville because I had ONE kid in one class who was sped and another single kiddo in a second class who was EFL. So on top of not getting paid for my grad degree in secondary English ed., I was told I had to do all this extra PD for no extra pay, just to keep my job! It’s the law. The saddest thing is that the school itself was AMAZING-a magnet program with high-performing students and a phenomenal staff. But many left to transfer to other districts OR worked a second job (like I did) to make ends meet. Again, though-this was NORTH Florida, which I love! It just isn’t tenable for single income households. Central and south FL pay more and seem to value their teachers more 🥺. You don’t need to share salary info, but people who don’t have a partner to support them or a ton of savings should be aware. It’s a HUGE step down versus northeastern states and states out West (I am a Florida girl but started in Vegas with Teach for America.)
Hello Abby! Thank you for your response! Yes, salaries for Florida teachers are not the best. It truly helps to have such a supportive partner to split the rent and other costs with. I hope you are doing well! :) Happy Teaching!
Hey Lau!!! Great information!!!I have couple of questions for you though: did you do your interviews online and didn’t have to come down to Frlorida personally? What was the time frame of your applying- interview-job offer? And (very important for me to know because we will be moving with my family): Do they give you an actual job offer, so you can show it to a landlord in order to rent? ... because I heard that you can’t rent without a prove that you work or will be working. Thank you so much for doing all these for your fellow-teachers!!!!❤️❤️❤️
Hello Margo! Thanks for watching. I interviewed over the phone (prepandemic), but I went to visit the schools before committing to a school. As far as the time frame I think it was a week after I applied that I heard back from the school (but this will vary depending on the time of year). I did have proof of employment to show my landlord before moving in. I believe I had a letter or something to confirm my employment. Hope this helps! Let me know if you have any other questions 😊
Hey Lau, I’m currently finishing up my secondary Ed ELA degree in Indiana. I’m doing my student teaching out here in the fall. When should I start applying for jobs in Orlando? I want to move there in December. Also, could I please get your template?
Hello @Comron Fouladi! I would start applying in August. Our school year starts at the beginning of August, but if you're not planning on moving until December, you still have time. They're always looking for teachers at the start of the school year, as student enrollment may increase and/or new positions become available. I would LOVE to send you my template. Please send me an email at LearningWLau@gmail.com Thank you SO much for watching. :)
Hey Lau I also moved in to Florida last year and planning to get a certification, so i have several questions. 1. Now, I applied for a temporary certificate, do I have to take any additional degree program from the district colleges other than the tests? (general knowledge, professional area and my major) It would be a great help if you can answer this question 😊
Hi Lau, currently planning on moving out of Dominican Republic to FL, I honestly loved watching this vid, It helped me to understand somethings 🙏🏾 I’ll definitely keep watching your vids.
I currently teach in Southern FL and looking to move closer to my mom in N. Florida. I have been looking at the Orlando area! Some great tips here! Thank you!
Another fantastic video Lau! I'd love to make Orlando my future home, but my wife is still hesitant. She's a Special Education teacher in NY, so I'm hoping your guidance will help her decision. Again, GREAT VIDEO!!
Hi! I've been teaching in Philippines for 19 years and now I am in Florida and planning to apply for teaching job, I am very much thankful if you could give me some tips to get teacher certificates. THANK YOU.
Hello Lau ! I watch your videos from Bangladesh. Appreciate your enthusiasm. I am a teacher here in BD. Been teaching elementary for 10 years now. I completed my masters degree in tesol from a reputed university. My wish is to move to Florida. Any suggestions for me please! Will it be possible to start a teaching career in FL, someday? Hi there I loved your video. I'm Sal from the UK and I teach business studies to 16-18 years olds at college. Does Florida consider UK teacher's? Really appreciate your support and content.
Hello Sal! Thank you for reaching out. Yes, Florida is in need of teachers. I'm sure that they will definitely consider you as an applicant. :) Happy Teaching!
I’m a teacher in Texas (k-12 music with masters). I’m having trouble figuring out of Texas transfers to FL. I want to move closer to my mom and sister.
Hello! I hope that my video gave you some helpful tips on how to get certified/transfer your certification. Also, I would reach out to the county that you'd like to teach for and see what their process is. Florida needs teachers, so I'm sure they'd be willing to help you speed up the process. :) Good luck!
Hi I recently came across of your video. And I found it informative. Could you please send me copy of the letter that you sent to different principals when you were looking for different jobs.
Thank you so much for watching. Not sure if you saw my video about interviewing, but here it is... ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-2rAp7aTjPNg.html
Great video !!!I'm a canadian elementary teacher from Canada but from Quebec so I teach in french . I currently live in Orlando and I'm contemplating teaching french but for middle school or colleges. Your video is helpful!
Hello Sophialavz! Thanks for watching. I'm not 100% sure about that. You'll have to go to the website county that you'd like to work for and check there.
Hello Lau. I am so grateful I found your channel. I am currently residing here in the Philippines. I'll be having my principal interview next week. If ever I will be lucky enough to get the job offer, can I process my teaching certification even I am not yet in Florida? Thank you in advance for your response.
Hello! Thank you for watching! Yes, from my experience, you can still accept a job even without being in Florida. I teach in central Florida, so I'm not sure if it's the same in all of Florida. I wish you the best of luck!
Hello, how are you? I really liked your video. I studied in Ecuador I have a university degree that validates here in Florida. Study accounting. I want to work as a teacher in an elementary school giving Spanish classes in Kindergarten. Would I need to have eco science to be a teacher in Florida?
Great Video and Info. I have a non-teachinf graduate degree but I want to teach i Florida since I will be moving there. Can I start the process while Im here in NY?
Thanks! This helps me feel like I’m on the right track! Were you able to send official transcripts electronically? Can’t find an email for them, just a physical address?
Hello! Yes, I was able to send them electronically. I think I called the FDOE and asked for where I could email it (I think!), but I know I definitely send it electronically. Hope this helps! Happy Teaching! :)
@@LearningWithLau thank you for confirming that! When you said “upload” I was like, “it exists!” Also, congrats on your new position! Watch more of your content after this initial video.
Hello Diarra! Thank you for visiting my channel. As long as you have your bachelor's degree, you can become a teacher in FL. You'll have to pass the education tests within 3 years of employment. I hope this helped!
