I’m in my thirties and have avoided learning to drive for a long time due to a bad experience with a previous instructor. Hi! Just wanted to say that you make great videos and they’re always super helpful. I was just wondering, during the exam, if I get asked to pull up on the left or right and I end up pulling up a bit too far, am I able to correct it or is that an instant fail?

Thank you, it depends how far you are. You want to be closer than a drains width to play it safe but don't risk getting too close.

Hey, I am loving these videos. I took by test but had TWO MAJORS because I didnt know where to 'safely pull up on the left'. In the USA where I am from we would NEVER just stop in the road, but it seems like that is what the examiner wanted me to do. I looked for an abanodned parking lot or a side street both times because I was on a busy road. What are the rules for pulling up? Can I do it on any street as long as there is not yellow line or bus stop?

brilliant idea. using markers on the window panel, i like that idea! This might work for parallel parking to get closer to the curb. Where I live you need to be 6 inches away from the curb for parallel park or they wont pass you.

That's a reasonable distance. They will let you off with more distance here but we definitely aim to get around that.

I have never ever seen that yellow brick in the road to demarcate a fire hydrant, but it’s very good to know! Do you know if this is a road sign used only in England ? (I live in Wales)

i have been driving since september last year and my driving is pretty good but I still have issues parking next to a curb, I tend to just mount them now and make sure half my car isn't in the road lol

Hey Richard, is it ok to stay on gear 2/3, break slow, then clutch down using break- to do the kurb parking? Or have to lower to gear 1 then complete the kurb parking ? Thanks a lot

You don't have to change down the gears as you slow the car down, make sure you change to the appropriate gear before you start accelerating again.

The reference point technique only works once you're stopped. You will of course have to come in at an angle and your wheels will also be at an angle. There is no 100% fool proof method, that is why the majority of cars have kerbed alloys. If you have no choice but to park on the road, the best way is to pull up on the right and use your right mirror to reverse up against the kerb. It is actually illegal to park facing traffic at night, but almost everyone does it and it is very rarely enforced. Obviously you can't use this technique on your test but once you've passed and if you want to take care of your expensive alloys, do this.

I find the reference point works well when moving too, just slow down to less than 5mph as you line it up.

Been driving about 4 months and still find it difficult parking straight especially parking in a space in between cars, I'm always too far from the kerb, I've tried practicing number of times but no matter what still can't get it looking normal like most other cars that are parked

You can stop near the driveway but you cannot block it.

If you are on 4th gear and you need to stop somewhere is it okay to slow down until you stop without down shifting gears and just skipping gears by shifting to neutral from 4th gear directly after I have stopped completely?

Try driving forwards a bit once lined up with the curb, that will help you judge if you're straight as you can see the direction the car is moving.

What about single yellow lines? Should we avoid them on the test? And how about yellow zig zags outside the hours of operation?

Yes you should avoid both unless the examiner tells you to stop on them. They won't expect you to know the hours of operation.

My front wheels always end up closer to the kerb than my back wheels. How to fix this? It happens when I don't have enough space to travel to straighten my car when trying to park.It drives me crazy because then I need to fiddle reversing to get my back of the car closer to the kerb.Honestly it's been only 3 weeks since I passed my test and I am dreading parking .

It takes about 2-3 car lengths for your car to straighten when stopping near the kerb forwards. Try bringing the nose into the kerb earlier to give you more time to straighten, if the space isn't big enough for that then you will need to reverse into the space.

Here are a couple of videos on steering. Unfortunately no videos on positioning yet, this is probably what you're struggling with. It's quite normal for new drivers to struggle with steering and end up going too left and right all the time. Try not to look at the edges of your car or the edges of your lane. I've passed recently and when I pull up on the left or when there is curb when I am driving, i hit it, I've already hit the curb 3 or 4 times what is your solution and how can I judge the curb? And does it happen in your lessons?

Well done on passing your test. It doesn't happen during my lessons because I take the steering wheel before this can happen, it's a very bad idea to hit the curb as you can unbalance your wheels and internally damage your tyres which could go pop when you're at high speed. I recommend not trying to get too close, don't go closer than you're absolutely certain that you won't hit the curb. Then you can get nearer the curb by reversing and using your curbside mirror.

@@ConquerDriving Do you think I've done some damage now? I've hit roughly around 5 mph and I felt the car vibrate when I hit curb. I haven't noticed any issues yet, but if I'll take it to the garage. And thanks for the tip, can you do a video on how to judge the curb please?

@@queenremix1353 I will do. Check your tyres for any cuts or bulges to make sure they're still safe. Some curbs are worse than others.

Can you keep rolling forward if you are Infront of a drive? And if so is it a minor fault?

You can, but if you keep rolling for too long you may confuse people trying to pass you. Generally you want to get the nose in and roll 2-4 car lengths to bring the back in whilst gradually straightening.

My best advice is to move the curb more the right at the bottom of the window. Try not to lean forwards or your view will change each time.

What speed would you recommend when pulling up and lining up with ref point? you. Also, would hitting the kerb when pulling up be a test fail usually? Thanks a lot 👍

Touching the curb gently is not a fail but hitting it or mounting it is. You don't need to be 5cm from the curb getting it under 20cm is normally sufficient for test standard.

You don't fail for that. You would fail if you continually got so close that you wouldn't be able to move around the car. Tyres and tarmac is too much in my opinion, especially in my car it's usually over a car length.
