One of the greatest benefits of using YNAB is how differently I think about spending. I'm learning to prioritize the things that are important to me and cut back on the rest. Here are five things I've done to help get my spending under control. 😀
(Full disclosure - I did have to get up during filming to answer the door for the UPS man. 😆)

I have found when online shopping, if I just put something I want in my cart and leave it overnight, the urge to buy greatly diminishes by the next day, but I still get that little kick that impulse buying gives me. I love the wish list idea, which is like that.

I do the same thing. I had an $80 order ready to go on Saturday. I told myself I'd come back to it the next day and ended up deciding I could get by with only $40 worth of items. $0 would be better, but it's progress!

“You don’t have to own it to appreciate it”. Those are awesome words of wisdom. In my 20s and early 30s I always fell in the trap of buying anything that seemed to be “sooo me” only to have it be unused as clutter in my house. Thank you for sharing such great info and tips!!

I can't remember where I read that idea - maybe a blog post, but I think about it often! I have a whole cabinet of adorable cat mugs that are very "me" but also very unnecessary (at least at that quantity). 🤦‍♀️😸 Thanks for watching, Terri! - Ashley

A great quote I saw recently was ‘Living isn’t expensive, showing off is’. Taking this to heart I got rid of my decent watch and replaced it with one that cost under $20. It’s simple, accurate, waterproof and I don’t have to worry about wearing it.

I’m a spender too. I just started a “no buy” year and I’m really trying to change my relationship with money. Budgeting seems daunting, but necessary. I think I finally get all of the things my dad used to tell me. I never understood why he said he was broke all the time when he had tens of thousands of dollars in his bank account.

Yesss! Creating a wish list is a game changer!! I also keep a wish list for things I want but can wait on and then when my birthday and Christmas comes I give that list to my family. They LOVE it because they know specifically what I want!

This was a great reminder and a motivator to check in with my husband and make sure we’re in sync about “finding the money first”. We both see each other’s spending as permission to spend ourselves so things can get out of hand quickly if we don’t stop and check ourselves.

Omg, love this video and YNAB! I have always been a spender and have been envious of my friends who are naturally so good at being savers. I felt like there's something wrong with me because I love to spend! How do I become a saver?! I used to struggle with money so much before YNAB. Before YNAB, I remember only checking my bank balance and not having enough money to cover checks, etc. and I got overdraft fees. I also remember trying so many different budgeting apps that I just never stuck with because it wasn't easy and it didn't resonate with me. I feel like so many budgeting apps are so shaming. YNAB is so inclusive, easy-to-understand, and relatable. You guys and gals at YNAB are the best.

Thanks, Ashley! Love #4. I've been trying to be better about checking the app BEFORE I spend. I have also started tracking my purchases immediately after I make them. This habit helps me to slow down my spending because I see how my purchase empties my categories. In the past I would buy bunch of stuff at different stores and track later. I wasn't feeling the loss of money immediately so I didn't register how my spending was affecting my budget (in the same way using cash makes you more aware of your spending).

I bond with wish lists while online shopping. Sometimes I find I don't want it later, I find something better, or cheaper, or I give myself time to budget properly for it in the future.

February is a no-spend month for my family (with the exception of a new bed and allowance made possible by our tax return). I'm thinking about mandating no-spend months every other month, so we build up to getting out of the pacheck to paycheck life faster!

I'm still working on avoiding the temptation of seeing some shiny new thing and telling myself I "need" this right away and I'll make up for it by spending less next month (which of course never happens). But having a budget has definitely helped me put off some of those impulse buys and forced me to see how spending on one thing directly reduces the money I have for something else, which might be more important although not as immediate.

I always think these type of budgeting videos are cute, women my age or a little younger who talks about budgeting when you're single or married with 2 incomes and no kids. I'm 32, married with a 1 income household of only 55k (before taxes) and we have 5 kids. We own our home, own 2 vehicles, have 3 months of savings, and make sure we at least put 5k Into our Roth every year. Let's see some budgeting from people that actually have a challenge not someone who tells me not to shop everyday lol.

I agree with them, were pointing out to her that the wording she used did not quite match what she intended to say. They in no way said anything inappropriate, it was your trolling comment that was ugly and bullying.
