George Harrison invited Eric Clapton to play on his song While My Guitar Gently Weeps. They wanted the guitar to sound like it was weeping and also Beatle-y. We'll show you our process of recreating that sound.
Listen to the final result here:

Actually, Lucy was originally Eric's. He gave it to George. When he picks him up in his car and asked him to join The Beatles on a session, Eric told him that he didn't have a guitar. George to,d him that he had that covered. His old red 57 Les Paul.

My God fellas. That tone is so so close and he murdered that part. Fuck. Every note I was like please keep hitting every note perfectly... and he did hahaha those bends were all so flawless. I feel like your Dad by saying this but I’m literally proud of you haha. The vibrato on the bends was literally Clapton man. That Bassman sounds killer. Eric used a crunching blonde 1964 Bassman or the blackface deluxe in the studio, so not too far from the same amp!

Excellent process of recreation! I would have sworn the effect was a bit of chorus, but it makes sense that it was ADT. Thank you for posting. BTW, here's a little story about "Lucy". She was originally a gold top LP owned by John Sebastian and then by Rick Derringer who ended up not liking how it played after he had Gibson refinish it cherry red sunburst. Derringer traded it in at a guitar shop for another guitar. A week later Eric Clapton came into that same shop, played Ricks red LP and then bought it and used it on WMGGW. Later, he gave it to George Harrison as a gift. Years later it was stolen from George when his house was broken into, and Lucy disappeared for a while. She ended up in Mexico, and when George found this out he contacted the owner in Mexico through intermediaries and he was able to get the guitar back only after he was forced into acquiring a laundry list of vintage guitars the owner wanted as a trade (ransom). Lucy has been around!

This is a great reproduction of the sound of that solo, as far as it goes. I think there's one little ingredient that would put it over the top. I recall Harrison saying they added what he called "the wobbler", some effect that added a slight vibrato to the guitar sound, that I hear on the original. I don't know if that was a setting on the ADT or something else, but I think there was some sort of subtle modulation put on that solo. This is just nit-picking, you guys did a great job recreating an iconic solo, as usual.

For those poor like me and have no pedals: Guitar with the bridge and neck pickup Compressor Bass and middle: mid range Treble: slightly above middle Gain: a super small amount, not to a point where there’s distortion, just enough to get the tone to have a good punch Once you record it, copy and paste the track to another track with the same amp settings to double track it. To get the sound of the ADT, you need to paste the track just slightly later than the original. To put in music terms, probably about one 128th note. Probably even less but you get the idea. Just barely delayed. If you were to copy and paste the track to where it’s exactly in time with the original, nothing will change and you won’t get the sound of an ADT. it’ll just make the guitar sound a bit louder.

I believe Clapton gifted "Lucy" to George prior to the recording of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" as I recall hearing Clapton speaking about doing it and saying that he didn't bring a guitar as he knew George had a good Les Paul. Also, I've read that Clapton said the solo didn't sound "Beatley" enough.

@@neilcandeloramusic Agree! My teachers (old dudes who had training from engineers from EMI/Abbey Road/Air Studios) All where educated like this. Only for certain effects they would push it against the grill. It's the upcoming PA/Live engineers from the early 80s who found out you could make your live mixes louder by closemiking things. This works great for that live but in the studio you're only adding problems this way. For example why closemic if you're gonna cut out the proximity effect anyway? Why not set the (the right mics) on the position the guitarist enjoys the sound of his amp. And if you feel you need more bass or treble , just ask the guitarist to had it on the amp!

Also have you used ADT on any of your Vocals yet? Love to hear comparison side by side before/After. There’s a Keely guitar pedal that you can use in guitar in mono or stereo in studio or stereo amps Keeley 30 MS Double tracker pedal, even approved by the great Paul McCartney too. I have this pedal. Does the ADT in your computer program run multiple channels at once? Or is it only one mono track at a time. And which program is it? Are you running Mac?Ive forgotten, I’m sure you said in other videos but I’ve forgotten. But the ADT output is stereo right ? For my own curiosity. Remember I’m as obsessed as you are lol.
@neilcandeloramusic
@neilcandeloramusic 3 года назад
It’s a waves plug-in. You have multiple options. The standard (stereo) version of it has the original track plus the ADT track and you can control each separately with pan, drive, phase - there’s a mono version of this without panning. Then there’s another version where you can have the source track plus 2 separate ADT tracks. Usually good for leaving the source in the middle and then having 2 separate ADT tracks panned out. It’s a decent plug-in, I’ve used on quite a bit of things, I most often use it on vocals and guitars. There’s still a “digital” sound to it, I wish I could have the real thing of course. But this still is a cool plug-in.

Neil, do you record at 48K ? If not start now! And turn Oversampling or HQ ON, on all your plugs that have that feature! And don't do Offline Renders, Render in Online Mode OR bounce to Two Track like you do! It's CPU munching , so leave HQ until final Mixdown.

I usually do 48k and then when I start doing mix downs through the altec I bump up to 96k. I bounce to tape and back at 96k as well, a few times I’ve managed to go 192k to the tape and back. But I couldn’t monitor at all, which was very difficult. So since then I’ve been sticking with all tracking 48k, and then 96k when I start going through real analog gear.
