I’m 43 and have been fishing for as long as I can remember and I have been lucky enough to have never been hooked past the barb but I have been very close. Nice catch though Joe.
I've been in a situation before where a fish shake put a barb through a thumb, obviously it depends on the location of the hook, but I had decent luck taking a knife and making a slit over the shank of the hook and lifting it out, assuming there isnt too much deep meat over the shank, it bled, but that wound was patched up with the boat first aid kit and some antispetic, obviously clean better once back to camp or home but it can save a trip to the ER. This from a guy that used to work in an ER. Im always prepared for a little backcountry "surgery" if need be. At least the hook was parallel to the skin surface, if she is just plunged down in its tough no matter what ya try.
Necessary information, but still... Ouch. Definitely something an angler should have figured out when fishing alone. One case where we don't want "practice makes perfect" haha
