Exfoliation is by far the most important aspect of my skincare. My cell turnover is sooo sluggish. I'm not exaggerating that it only takes a day and a half for my nose to start to feel bumpy and my skin will look dull, flakey, waxy and have a building layer of dead skin after 2 days. My skin glows and is so freaking soft because I have a very aggressive (NOT abrasive) exfoliation routine (that I would NOT recommend to almost all skin). I use these exfoliating pads with micellar water and go over my face thoroughly, then I wash my face thoroughly with a microfiber cloth, concentrating on the areas where I often build up dead skin, then I use The Ordinary's 7% glycolic acid toner. I pour a small amount in the palm of my hand and bolster it's acidity with 2 drops of 50% pure glycolic acid. I also do a 30% AHA peel every 4 days and a 50% glycolic peel every 30 days. I also use a Retinol to turnover to cells too. I've never heard of anyone being this aggressive with their skin, but I swear, my skin has never been so glowy and soft and if I don't do this, I get a buildup quickly.

I always wondered if those peeling gels were really doing anything, or if it was just the product balling up on itself, rather than dead skin. It's good to know that there's some science behind them.

I was getting flakey skin using physical exfoliants (which I like the feel of) and my solution was to...exfoliate more, which of course made it much worse. One treatement of BHA/AHA and my skin was smoother than it ever has been. Chemical exfoliants work really well for me.

i use the same skinfood peeling gel too! i didn't like it at the beginning but have grown to like it - i can use this more often and skin feels exfoliated without feeling like i've stripped it. I really like the Refresh Water from Heimish that has AHA and BHA as evening toner. For chemical only using The Ordinary AHA & BHA as it's more of an affordable option.

I've been using konjac-sponges for years when I wash my face and it has helped a lot. Peeling gels are also fun but I use it once a week with the harsher The Ordinary's peeling solution(half a week in between them) that I started a few months ago. My skin is rather dry overall but a bit more oilier on the T-zone with more noticeable pores. It can also be sensitive if the moisture barrier is at all weakened so watching this surprised me that my skin took it so well. Ofc it was a bit more red in the beginning but that was pretty much it.

Hi Michelle! Thank you for this very informative video! Quick question. I loved the results I saw when using AHA. I no longer have those bumps on my forehead. Recently, I have been getting huge and painful pimples with whiteheads around my mouth, chin and jaw. I have done blood tests and there is nothing wrong with my hormones. I am 26. It could be because of the heat and sweat, although I make sure to wipe my sweat off asap. The doctor put me on 50mg antibiotics for 2 months + topical antibiotic lotion + BHA lotion. I feel like BHA irritates my skin. I tried using it before too, when my skin had much less breakouts, and still felt it didn't do much but increase the redness. My question is, would using AHA on active acne (I don't know if that's the term lol I mean new huge breakouts with puss) be beneficial, or is AHA better for those tiny bumps only? Thank you so much for your time!

Love your videos - thank you! How about a natural (and cheaper) lactic acid mask from yogurt or Kefir (Kefir is stronger, especially if homemade)? Or you could make it even stronger by straining the Kefir or yogurt through a milk bag or cheesecloth and just use the resulting lactobacillus liquid. (The leftover milk solids make thick Greek yogurt/Kefir!) It will last in the refrigerator for a long, long time! (Months.)

I love using salicylic acid! It really helps my acne a lot but i noticed it helps much better if i use it a twice a day when I have bad acne. Then go down to once every other day. I added a physical exfoliant a few weeks ago and use it about once a week. I also found that cleaning the things that touch my face often like my headphones, glasses and pillowcase really helps with breakouts.

@@MadDeviSri I use hand sanitizer. I am certain it does damage the fake leather of my headphones however I don't think it does so anymore than it already would when in contact with skin, which is acidic. Basically it damages plastic over time but is completely harmless to metal and glass. I still think the tradeoff for having clean stuff is worth it.

The very short and slightly oversimplified version - tretinoin makes your skin cycle faster, while AHAs act on the end of the cycle (the loosening part). For anti-aging, their actions are pretty different again! But the overall noticeable effects end up being similar ;)

Tretinion causes your cells to stop producing keratin filiments . That is the substance that stick cells together. A AHA removes mineral bonds like calcium . Salicylic acid removes carbon bonds . None of these will disovle a already formed blackhead. They can especially tretinion make extraction easier and will hinder reformation .

I believe that I have set a routine of over exfoliation through buying too many products. I cut back or stop for a few days or a week when I feel like I’ve overdone it but I always go back and the shiny tightness never seems to resolve itself. It also looks transparent and crepey in some places which I think is premature for my age. Should I stop for a longer period? How do you know when you’re doing just the right amount?

Is it beneficial to alternate AHA's throughout the week, for instance using mandelic acid one night, then lactic acid a few days later? The main reason I ask is because I have very sensitive skin (and mild rosacea) and I want exfoliation benefits, but as little irritation as possible. But since the effects of chemical exfoliation can't always be seen right away, I'm thinking that there may not be a discernable difference. I also want to incorporate a BHA product regularly, but mainly just on the areas where I get blackheads and am not as sensitive, like my nose. Ahh, so much trial and error!

I am now using Walgreens exfoliating gel cleanser everyday and I swear it worked Miracles on my skin. Follow with cream of your choice ..My skin is almost clear now .. and I know it is these items that are doing it bc when I stopped to check to see if they were the reason for my success my skin got angry and broke out everywhere .. gotta find what works for each individual I suppose

Hi Michelle...I love your videos and your blog! I also love acids and they’re well tolerated by my skin. I’ve watched your first video on pH several times and I’m trying to find an answer to a question. After cleansing the face, which would go first: vitamin C or an AHA? I’ve been reading all about pH, wait times, etc. and now I’m more confused than ever! It seems that most people advise to use vitamin C first, wait 10-15 minutes, and then use an AHA. What I don’t get here is that skin has a pH of 5-6, so it seems to me that it would be less compatible to use vitamin C first since using an AHA would lower the pH of the skin. I need to combine using vitamin C and AHA in my morning routine because I’m using tretinoin at night. I’m alternating The Ordinary Glycolic Toner and Lactic Acid, and will be using a simple DIY L-ascorbic acid serum. I’m religious about using sunscreen and also take steps to strengthen my skin barrier. I just want to do what’s best for my skin and get the most out of my products! I don’t have the money to throw away by misusing products and rendering them ineffective due to pH or not waiting long enough! Help, please! 🙂💕
@LabMuffinBeautyScience
@LabMuffinBeautyScience 6 лет назад
Dr. Julien Arbor There isn't any research either way unfortunately! Anecdotally I would go with vitamin C first since it has a harder time getting into the skin, and you generally want it to go deeper, but only if you can put on the AHA without wiping it off...

@AdamL6102
@AdamL6102 6 лет назад
I imagine so, looking up Betaine Salicylate on PubMed garners exactly 0 results. Capryloyl SA only has manufacturer studies or L'Oreal self assessed studies. Frustrating. I am looking into higher pH products! Reading that study was very interesting I hope we see more. It did say exfoliation was almost the same as lower pH products as long as it was used continuously, but I'm not sure I want to use BHA every day because it will probably dry me out. The struggle continues.

you can dilute your bha product with a regular toner to reduce its pH (and also its percentage). i do that with my glycolic toner and my skin reacted better than using the glycolic toner by itself, i just pour a couple drops of my regular toner on my hand and then two or three drops of my glycolic toner in it. i prefer it that why because i don't know if mixing two different products in one bottle will be safe because im scared the preservative systems may clash? or you could dilute it with water (preferably bottled water) by pouring it into your bha product.

Hi Michelle, what a great video, physical exfoliation is dangerous because people without information or previous experience can purchase on any drugstore and it's overuse or incorrect application leads to irritation, inflammation, breakouts and hyperpigmentation, chemical exfoliation is generally prescribed by a dermatologist who gives all directions for their right use. Thank you and loves😘

Hi Maria C. Delgado, thank you for your suggestion but i have issue about deep scars so probably will start with retinoid instead of glycolic 😊

Ria R, tretinoin is a good alternative if you have that kind of skin issues, you can begin with a low concentration for allowing skin to get used to it, so you won't suffer secondary effects of this medication, which are worst than those caused by glycolic acid, you can use BHB as 2% face wash twice a day and tretinoin at night, and don't forget using sunscreen and physical protection like hats, glasses and umbrellas everyday😊

Michelle, if am I using an exfoliating acid in my cleansing could I use it everyday or is too much? It's because it keeps less time in our skin so what should I do?

can you explain how and what type of exfoliation can we use during the usage of retinoid since retinoid leave me some dead skin cell of skin peeling and I’m not sure which exfoliation should I use to get rid of it. I have used the Paula choice BHA 2% exfoliant one but my dead skin cell was still there. I’m just afraid that I would over exfoliate my skin.-.

Ok is exfoliating with green tea from used green tea bags good or bad?? Cuz that’s what I’ve been doing. I also would like to know your opinion on these diy avocado and honey etc face masks. Do they work or is it just pure bullsh*t

Hi Michelle, I keep hearing everywhere that physical exfoliation is really bad for the skin as it causes sensitivity and micro tears which flare up and allow bacteria to adhere. What is your stance on this?
@LabMuffinBeautyScience
@LabMuffinBeautyScience 5 лет назад
It's a common myth! There's no evidence that it causes micro tears, and dermatologists use it all the time (microdermabrasion).

My skin had been a lifelong mess until I began exfoliating. Most people ask how my skin looks so good, clear, wrinkle free, glowing at 70yrs old. I use my clarisonic with sometimes an chemical exfoliator salicylic acid. The clarisonic also massages the skin bringing blood closer to surface with collagen.

Great great great video. Im currently using glycolic acid 3 times a week. Im wondering if i can fit in lactic acid like 2 times a week on the other nights. So that would be 5 times a week. Do you think it would be unnecessary. What's ur thought on the maximum times we shall exfoliate per week.
@Poemi10304
@Poemi10304 6 лет назад
Danny Mao Depends on how well your skin tolerates it. If it can’t, less times per week or weaker product.

So i have a question: As far as i know, and i could be wrong, isn’t there a limit to how often your cells can reproduce before the telomeres on the ends of the DNA degrade and your cells start to, basically, age and degrade? So if you speed up the process of your cells reproducing by exfoliation, aren’t you speeding up your own aging process? I’m talking about the chemical exfoliants here, mechanical shouldn’t be a problem. I’m just not sure messing with your bodies natural „shedding“ rhythm is a good idea. Because if I’m right, that means anyone thats using such chemical exfoliants to speed up their „shedding“ process is aging their skin faster and that doesn’t sound like a good idea in the long run.

I've extensively researched this theory and the answer to this is really complicated, but long story short if that were the case we would end up with no skin at all.

Yes, I agree with you Michell, physical exfoliants are very appreciated by women, the thing is must be applied gently, with our hands in soft motions, not to harm so delicate face skin😊

I was literally just reading your diy vit c serum, and before I actually go out and buy some ascorbic acid and glycerin (that might be fun for my dry skin), is it okay to use with my niacinamide serum? I read a Paula’s Choice article that says it’s okay, but I still want to know your opinion! I love love love LOVE ❤️ your blog and videos, I’m a newbie to this side of skincare, and you’ve helped me out a LOT

Also, where do you put this in your routine? It’s basically water in consistency right? I have a regular toner (calendula from Kiehl’s as a very gentle exfoliation) and a hydrating toner (whamisa) so I’m thinking in between those toners?

It really depends - I would recommend trying them together and seeing if you get the flushing reaction, and if you do then keep them apart!

MysticMavi you can do some research Or ask your derm about azeleic acid- it’s supposte to help rosacea Starting from 15%. It gently exfoliates but is also registered as rosacea helping drug. Eg fenicea, skinoren And other brand names:)
