First let me say how wonderful it is to see riders like yourself actually talking to the public and teaching what they know. I'm an equine locomotion therapist and have years under my belt of teaching practical anatomy to professionals. Among those are top lever riders, vets, farriers, dentists, police officers (mounted of course) and others. I never know if these comments actually get to the person in the videos. I suspect most of the time not. However, one can only try. I am just leaving this note to see if you are perhaps curious to find out why your horse struggles with the exercice you are requiring of him on the right rein. It may be that you are satisfied with the results you achieve and are not curious in the least. That is fine...but on the off chance that you might want to know, I would be happy to explain in a clear and simple way, why the right rein is presenting a few challenges...and I can assure that it is not because horses have a good and a bad side...He's a truly beautiful horse and the two of you make an impressive pair. Good luck in the future.

I've just found you. Albeit by accident and I'm so pleased. These videos are great so far. Love the way you break it down and also point out any evasion which may happen and how to rectify. Thankyou. 😊

I have to say that I like this exercise. It'll be interesting tontry on one of our lesson horses. I do have to add that I am so impressed by your sitting trot. You are so steady in the saddle. I always feel like I'm bouncing a bit and uncomfortable. Something else for me to work on!!

When I do this, my horse loses impulsion. What am I doing wrong?

Amelia, you're such an elegant rider. I watch your videos and am subscribed to your channel. I have a question about wiggly feet. It seems dressage riders let their feet wiggle alot in the trot gait. Can you explain why? It seems a steadier foot would be less confusing for the horse.

I was interested to see that when you pushed him over with your inside leg, it was bump-bump-bump. Perhaps this is more effective than steady pressure? Or was this something to do with riding with spurs?
@AmeliaNewcombDressage
@AmeliaNewcombDressage 3 месяца назад
Yes it can be more effective.

When you give up the inside rein to check for an honest connect, the horse's correct response is to remain properly bent ??
@AmeliaNewcombDressage
@AmeliaNewcombDressage 5 лет назад
Yes. The horse should stay in the bend for several strides when you release.

Is this only for dressage or would a western rider use this?

Do you continue to push with the inside leg pretty much all the time or should the horse automatically do it for the rest of the riding session
@AmeliaNewcombDressage
@AmeliaNewcombDressage Год назад
It's a strength and understanding thing. You may need the aid more often at first, then as the horse understands more and can step under and carry themself better, they don't need the aid as frequently.

Hi! I would have liked to see this with an ordinary bridle. For me it seems a bit harder when you ride with an ordinary bridle, maybe I'm wrong. Otherwise I enjoy your videos!

I am just beginning to try dressage. My horse is not all that forward. Do I need to just trot around as fast as I can until it becomes normal for hm or get him in frame, moving off my leg and increase impulsive after that? I’ve been told to just keep trotting him as fast as he’ll go. I am confused

Hi Amelia, where abouts on his body were you using the crop, on his shoulder or behind your leg? Wouldn't white crops or dressage whips be great!
@AmeliaNewcombDressage
@AmeliaNewcombDressage 6 лет назад
I was using the whip on his hind quarters. Yes. A white whip would be great!!
@nala3055

unfortunately I cant put your videos into practise at the moment really, because I am only working with riding school horses. One is a total dobbin (slows down if you use your leg or the crop haha) and the other is a 6 year old who is very mareish and tries very hard- but just doesn't have the topline or quarters to do what I ask her to. She tries though bless her

Amelia, I have the same problem with my mare, but all the leg yielding in the world wasn’t getting her on the outside rein. Low in behold it’s been a leaning on the right shoulder. As soon as I tap her on the shoulder with my whip she gets off and takes the outside rein. Have you had similar experiences?
@AmeliaNewcombDressage

Hmm! Well every horse is different but whatever works to help your horse understand. 👍👍

My gelding is doing this as well. He bulges his right shoulder out when going to the left. It's really been a struggle for me to keep my left thigh on him. It's almost as if he ignores it. However after watching Ameila ride, I'm thinking my leg may not be back behind the girth far enough on that side. The other direction is much better.
