I'm in total agreement here. This may be ok if you're a tiny person, or have a cheapo paddle. I am 6'5" and I would NEVER put my weight onto my carbon fiber paddle like that. I wouldn't even do it on the cheapo 40$ paddle for that matter.

Was gonna say essentially the same thing. I'm over 6' and 250+ seriously doubt I'm using my paddle as an outrigger and it remains undamaged.

I've 30 years of kayaking experience, never sit on your paddle. It will break and if you slip/loose grip and float off downstream through a grade 5 with a broken paddle it will end badly. A carbon shaft costs £150+ Keep it for paddling not sitting on. Rest it across the front within reach of the cockpit so it can be grabbed once your deck is on. With durable modern plastic boats the seal launch is the safest way to go.
@tranquility9325
@tranquility9325 6 лет назад
Stu eightfish I agree it's not the smartest way to enter a Kayak. It might be taught routinely but that doesn't make it any less unwise. It's better to grip onto the rim of both sides of the coaming then put one foot in followed by the other.

@1:56 = this is GENIUS!!!! omg exactly the tip I was looking for! I have some river frontage where the shore is these rocks that are kinda like this (but smaller) -- there's no beach, no sand, no grass, nothing but these big wet stones :( I've struggled getting into and especially OUT of the kayak the few times that I've taken it out for a paddle -- I'm gonna try the tip in this video and see if it works! hopefully the oar I bought it strong/strudy enough and won't break when I try to use it to support my body weight, that worries me a little bit....

These are relatively easy with these sit-on-top and large cockpit, rec boats. Getting into a touring or sea kayak with a smaller cockpit is a different animal, especially if you have long legs. One reason I've come to love my single-seat canoe, even though it's a lot slower than my long boat.

every single one of these kayaks was very open or sit-on. I would like to see one in a tighter-fitting opening, where you can't simply fold your knees and slide your legs in after you sit. Both Kayaks I have require you to slide your feet in first - meaning you need to sit on top. One is a poly, and one is a wooden one. More than once, I have awkwardly fallen in the water either getting in or out. Paddle outrigger works, but really hard on a 2-pc paddle.

Me getting in from dock: calmly and slowly get into kayak and sit down. Bobble to one side, overcorrect and bobble to the other side, rinse repeat until I'm upside down and kayak is completely filled with water. Get hapless onlooker to help get boat out, drain water, rinse and repeat.

Anyone thought of making a easy outrigger system that can be clamped on & off the kayak /canoe easily and stored? 3 rods in a light weight material such as aluminium, bamboo, wood might do , 2 rods that firm the parallel sides would attach to the kayak with strong clamps, and a cross bar would join the parallel bars, making a u-shape. At the point on connection, 2 floats would be mounted or attached . I think the floats could be any lightweight object like plastic water bottles. The join between the parallel bars and the cross bar could be an ‘L’ shape screw in system, or a split pin arrangement. It’d have to be easy to put together, dismantle and store. It wouldn’t necessarily be needed every time, but could help stabilise things when there’s high wind, waves and unstable landing spots. Just a thought. And yes, breaking the paddle by sitting on it might become an expensive exercise, both monetarily and life threatening if you’re a long way from help or a store.

I would never ever ever try that last method where you use the paddle to stabilize, putting all of your weight onto it. Excellent way to break a 500$ carbon fiber paddle in the middle.

Bracing the paddle on the rocks made me cringe. Would you do that with a $400 carbon paddle?
@kirk2459
@kirk2459 6 лет назад
I do it with my $500 carbon paddle all the time, you are not sitting on the paddle shaft or the blade only bracing your boat with it. A good paddle is made to be used not put in a glass case over the fireplace only to view how shiny it is.

@@kirk2459 Do you really? I've just upgraded my kayak & paddle, I was considering bringing my old paddle for manuvers like this and using my new one just for rowing. I've spent the last decade on a sit on top recreational and have just gotten a sit in touring... Your paddle has held up to this? I cringed to pay what I did for it, no way I could stomach buying a second

Vital point not mentioned here is to put your weight on the center line of the hull, right over the keel line, and practice (on land) the little movement you have to make to get that foot out of the way as your bum is about to hit the seat. You can get away with putting your feet "just anywhere" in a wide, stable boat, but any hull will seem unpredictable if your weight isn't centered, and a skinny boat just won't let you get away with it.

There is a much easier way to get in off of the dock. I'm no expert but I find it extremely easy to sit down on the dock first, put one hand on the dock one on the outside of the kayak and then just slide in. Same with getting out again.

Pushing off with your bare hands in the sand can be dangerous. No way to tell what might be hidden - glass, sharp rock, clam shell, metal shard etc. Best to wear gloves if you plan on doing that.

A lot of so called experts teach ppl to do it this way. Do not put your weight on your paddle. It's awkward as hell, can break your paddle, and it's just plain stupid. You can hold on to both sides of the boat, lower your center of gravity, and get in slowly. It's a lot easier to do it from land as opposed to a dock, but not impossible. If your smart you will NOT do it this way.
