The Leonard N. Stern School of Business at NYU sits in the middle of one of New York City’s well-known neighborhoods, Greenwich Village. The school’s dynamic culture reflects its vibrant surroundings. I want to get into nyu stern but my gpa is 3.5 is this a problem because the average gpa of students there is 3.8-4

You can't go back and change your GPA, but you can show Stern and other business schools that you can handle the academic rigor in other ways - an above average GMAT or GRE score would be the best place to start. Is work experience mandatory?

Work experience of some sort is mandatory for any top MBA program. However, for some younger applicants, that experience can be a proxy. So, if an applicant was a student body president or athlete or ran a small non-profit, all could be reasonable "substitutes" for work conventional experience as examples.
