Getting into medicine is hard. It's so important to understand the process. This video covers how to get into undergraduate medicine in Australia. Medical School entry has 3 main requirements. The UCAT (Formerly known as the UMAT), the ATAR and, if you're lucky, an interview!
This video covers all that and also gives an overview of what the timeline looks like from applying for the UCAT to getting the interview offers!
Good luck!

This is a really helpful video thanks! As a year 12 student who’s looking to get into medicine next year, there’s so much information online that it becomes slightly overwhelming! You explained everything so clearly, thankyou!

Can you do a video on how to practice UCAT efficiently. I did 181 days of practice and ended up with a percentile pretty close to your second attempt. I noticed that at some stage, no matter how much practice you do you'll not improve much (and also was very anxious the exam day).

Hey Syl! I was wonderibng how much leadership during school matters when it comes to getting into med? Is it just something that would be asked during an interview or the application itself?

Thank you so much for this video! When year twelve rolled around, did you prioritise studying for the Ucat or for your final exams? I didn’t even know that you apply end of year 11 to do the Ucat. I’m currently doing year 10 and really have a passion for science and medicine, I would really love to do Undergraduate medicine but as I live in Victoria the only uni That does undergrad is Monash, and it is Extremely competitive, you basically need a 99. I know my year 12 vce exams are still 2+ years away but I worry what I should do if I don’t get 99. It would be really helpful if you could do a video about year 10-12 or 11-12 and how you applied for ucat + what universities you considered. Kind Regards Finn :)
@DrSyl
@DrSyl 3 года назад
Hey Finn, Thanks for the comment! Prioritising ucat vs ATAR is a tough call because there are many factors involved but the key takeaway would be that since they are weighed up pretty similarly you should focus on the one you're weakest in. Do some mock UCATs to see what you're scoring and compare it to your predicted ATAR. Its great that you're so ambitious at such an early stage but don't forget to explore and enjoy your other hobbies because they are also important in having a balanced and happy life - which helps in interviews, ha!

@@DrSyl thank you so much for taking the time to reply, maths is definitely not my strong point. Im pretty sure there is a numerical section the the ucat so I will have to put quite a bit of effort into that aswell :)

I am currently 15 years old (year 10), living in Adelaide, and striving to become a doctor and to study at hopeful at the University of Adelaide or any other medical schools in Adelaide. After watching this video, I am really excited about the future, and I will work hard throughout High school so I can study as a medical student. If anyone sees this comment, please tell me what sort of things did you do in High School to help you get into med school. I know the basic things like studying for the UCAT (which I am doing) and stuff like that, but I still have a vague idea on the topics like volunteering and other stuff like The Duke of Edinburgh's Award. I am a bit overwhelmed as no one really talks or educates on these topics. My main question would be: what subjects are needed to gain entry, what should I do today to prepare, and what other ex-curricular things should I do to get me a better chance of getting entry into a med school. Thank you to anyone who comments.

Hi Dr Syl, I really enjoyed the video and I would like to ask you this. I'm currently studying Bachelor of Medical Science in Western Sydney University, If I preform very extensively in my majors which are anatomy/Physiology, Human nutrition and Biomedical science is their any chance for me to get into Medicine without the UCAT-Test. Lastly, is there any pathways options to avoid UCAT. 😀

Can you make a video on MBBS admission for already graduates from different fields? For examples: Biotech graduate like myself want to study MBBS. Thanks

Sir, for a mature age student (33 yo), would you recommend the undergraduate medicine pathway or the undergrad/postgrad pathway? I'm not too fussed if it takes a while, I just want to maximise my chances of eventually getting in. I think UNE is taking mature age applicants for the undergrad pathway, but I've applied for entry into the USC Bachelor of Medical Science so that I can apply for postgrad medicine with them after (I think they partner with Griffith Uni?). Should I apply for both? Thank you very much.
@DrSyl
@DrSyl 3 года назад
Hey mate, If you've never studied before I would definitely apply for undergraduate first and if unsuccessful then you could do a science degree and apply for post graduate later :)

You said it...its hard to get in but not hard to stay in??? Where is the logic in that statement?? In Australia, Nurse Practitioners can work independently and can also prescribe medication independently. I really dislike using the term..doctor..for physicians...GPs and alike. They are not real Doctors. Everyone assumes that a doctor..is someone who heals people when in fact the total opposite is true. A Phd ... Dmed or doctor of medicine.. Doctor of Science DS...etc are the REAL DOCTORS in our society. Those that graduate from medical school are given honorary titles!!! In Australia...optometrists can officially call themselves Doctors as can Vets and Dentists. Its crazy and wrong!!. Medical graduates in Australia more recently are completing a MD..doctor of medicine ( again its a phoney title because its really equivalent to a masters degree level 9) the universities of the day changed it for financial reasons because they then could charge domestic students FULL fees. A real Dmed is an AQF level 10 degree...which is even higher than a Phd. You see..the term doctor used globally is for the most part a phoney title which has very little meaning....as you can be either a dentist...optometrist...GP...or a vet???? Stupid. The answer is simple. Do away with that title altogether for those professions unless they actually earn it outright and do the proper research and coursework like everyone else has to do!!!! Those that are REAL DOCTORS are being short changed..they have done everything required to attain that higher degree......yet you have the situation where the phoney doctors are given a title they have not earned. PAs should be called doctors as well using that stupid logic!!! If a Nurse Practitioner in my country has the same autonomy as a GP why not give them that honorary title??? Instead of a Vet ..dentist..or optometrist??? Where do you draw the line??? It stinks. If i had it my way...every phoney doctor would have it taken away from them immediately. I would also make every GP and specialist re sit their exams every 5 years. If they fail..then its back to uni!!! Reason being is that they forget alot of what they learn at uni. Remember they only have to pass each course not achieve distinction level in each course..meaning they can walk out of uni not knowing 30 to 40 percent of medical knowledge and practice medicine on people! Crazy.I extend this to all other professions as well. The worst of all is that it takes nearly a perfect score in ucat or gamsat plus interview to get accepted into med school...so why not make it that you need a near perfect score to get out of med school!!! and into a hospital. That seems fair does it not? No point in having brilliantly academic high school students who ace physics...chemistry..biology..maths and english...but who are mediocre at physiology...anatomy..pharmacology...and lousy at nutrition ( the most important of all subjects) and biochemistry at med school!!! See my point. Double standards. So my suggestion of enforcing every medic to be examined on a 5 yearly basis just reinforces that high standard expected from start to retirement. We are dealing with human lives! Expect nothing less than the best.
