I remember just writing everything down on lectures, focusing on quantity rather than quality, thinking "ah, I'll reread it later and understand what's going on". Needless to say the conceptual part was missing altogether. One time on exam professor asked me a question and I was like "we never wrote that down!!" He asked for my notebook and showed me exactly what he asked for, all written down... That's how I learned to take lectures seriously.

I found it a tremendous advantage not only to have done the pre-reading but to review my notes after the class to ensure that it reflects my understanding of what the prof said. Recording the lecture on your phone can sometimes help in that something said on the first ten minutes of the lecture may not be clear to you until the conclusion of the lecture. When some part of the lecture is not clear, I hesitate to write it down, so having a recording has sometimes been helpful.

Once you're in graduate school... good luck not reading before a lecture lol

Part of that is because grad classes are smaller, and it is harder to sit there without it being obvious that you didn’t do the pre-reading.

Pre reading is so ESSENTIAL! It saves me time in the long run and helps me be active in class which helps a lot

Agree! I have been wonderig why I don't listen so well in class. Pre-reading seems to be the solution to this

I never went to college. But even in high school. I was one of those geeks who would read the textbooks for fun.

My English Lit teacher gave me an old textbook and its amazing. I’m not only staying home from parties to do more exciting things, but that exciting thing is to dump information into my knowledge pie hole. Learning is hella addictive 🤣🤣

There's so many skill-sets or pre-requisites to the act of reading; I learn new things about how to be a better reader every month or so. Two years ago, my school adopted a literacy curriculum by a notable university (which I will politely leave unnamed) that did not meet the needs of my students. Throughout that year, as my colleagues and I bitched and moaned all about how terrible the curriculum was, I noticed something interesting about one of the units. It was the one on non-fiction texts, and the basic gist of the unit was the fact that one cannot possibly expect to read non-fiction texts without taking the time to orient yourself to the text and gain some insight into what you're about to dive into. I was teaching literacy for the first time then (I'd been teaching history up until that year, when my school had some unexpected staffing shortages), and I was completely shocked to have come upon the realization that reading non-fiction took a totally different skill set from reading fiction. I guess I'd always known it was different in the back of my head, but seeing it all laid out in a step-by-step flow-chart sort of way made me really think about how different it was. Maybe I had a shit education growing up, not learning about "pre-reading" or the value of such until I literally had it in front of me, or maybe I slept in class the day it was being taught. Or maybe I was just never taught at all how to properly read because the US school system is an absolute fucking joke. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Where is the unit from? I'd love to read it too, if possible!

I would love to see how you go about marking a book. Adler talked about the importance of this in his book in order to promote active reading.

The pages on x-raying a book and setting up outlines of chapters are what I found of great use. My own reading methods are things that I experiment with.

I'm coming up on week 10/10 of this quarter. I'm taking a class on Japanese history, and every week I've been watching the lecture and just scribbling everything down that I think relates to the week's essay prompt. When it came time to put everything together into a cohesive essay, I couldmt do it. Every essay was shit. I knew I couldn't expect much better considering I wasn't doing any of the signed, but it still felt terrible. Especially because I chose the class due to an existing interest in Japanese history. Watching this video has inspired me to go read the Wikipedia page corresponding to next week's lectures, hoping to get a little more out of the lecture than I have been. Thank you sir.

hey, this is a random question. not at all related to this video. I have seen your other videos and it is clear you like reading Hemingway. So I had this question that do you think Hemingway's portrayal of women makes him a misogynist?
@RCWaldun
@RCWaldun 4 года назад
From our perspective yes. But after placing Hemingway's work in his historical context, probably not. This is too big of a question I can't answer fully here.
