I'm not a game dev and I'm not planning to be one. I'm studying web/desktop/mobile (software) development, but I find your content very useful man! Keep it up!

Thank you for shedding some light on the whole marketing side of things. I'm coming to realize that marketing is a skill set you need to learn that is just as important as actually making a game. Marketing is one of the reasons why I'm starting with small games so I can learn how to market my games before I commit to a large project. I discover games mainly through youtube ads and steam store front pages. I occasionally search terms in steam like "strategy" or "FTL" hoping to run into FTL clones.

Paying attention to how you find games is important, because if you are making the game you want to play, you are your target market, which means you have direct insight into how others might find games. Use this to your advantage when releasing your game!

I'm struggling to decide for a name for my game, because I think it is soooo important that it's something easy recognizable and somehow shows immediately what the game is about mainly (since it's going into simulation direction), mostly I'm struggling, because I'm unsure about rights to use it ("Critters" is a very generic term, but it's used by an old movie with same name) and then there is also the problem that it might be too generic. It's easy to remember, but I know it would be hard to find on google searches etc. Do you have any tips or can tell about the process of finding a fitting good name for a game? I know you already mentioned a few things in this video, so I'm curious if there is more I could consider to put into my idea finding process :o Also....what to do when one is getting attached to a WIP name and needs to change it? I don't know if Iam putting too much thought into this, but I do feel like it's a very important thing.

Unfortunately there is no right answer to this. I think ultimately the title should be a creative decision. Its your art, from your heart...make what you want to make. But that doesn't mean you cant have a descriptive subtitle or something. "Critters: Creepy Crawly Simulation" or something like that. I have no idea what your game is so I doubt that's appropriate...but subtitles are a great way to both pick the name you like and be a little more marketing savvy by understanding how people search. And I am not a lawyer and this is not legal advice, but as far as I know, trademarks are only for specific mediums. So if a movie uses it, they'd have to have a separate trademark for a game, and so on for music, etc.

When I was a kid we used to go around singing this made up song about a meatball falling off of a pile of spaghetti and rolling around on the floor until it went outside to the tune of On Top of Old Smokey. Meatball runner...Lmao

Interesting, I think this is one of those cases where people don't see that most developers are customers but not all customers are developers. I am one of those people that goes through a genre list on Steam, but definitely I won't buy all, not even all the good ones. Before people get to your cool indie game on page 27 there are literally hundreds of games before it, it's likely that people have already decided on a purchase or have a list of favorites, if the game's page and info doesn't make them want to dump all others for it, it won't stand a chance.

Yes! And not even to mention the subtleties of the colors you use, the main graphic, the words you use to describe your game. Not only should they be descriptive, but you also should know who you're talking to. The words you use to describe a game would be very different if your target market is 60 year old doctors, versus 13 year old kids.
