Thank you for the awesome video! Here's a summary: 1. Research other games that are similar to your game, because they already have players that like games of the same genre as yours. 2. Research who in the media that covered that other game in reviews, streams, walkthroughs...etc, because they already are connected to those players. Utilize the "Google" quotes. 3. Create a spreadsheet with the contacts of those media outlets. 4. Contact them to cover your game too!
So in a nutshell: If you want an audience for your game, don't spam it everywhere, find people who are related to your game. Example: If you're making a 2d survival game, and now think of the games that are similar to yours. A great example would be Don't starve and Terraria, now you should go and try to expose your game on their forums, discussion topics, social media, the people who play them(youtubers, streamers) etc. and create a list. This is the most efficient strategy to expose your work, not just spamming it everywhere!
7:35 I feel the "why would they play my game instead of that one" is a good question to ask yourself in a sense of game design, when you are looking for your hook and your unique selling point. But when it's time for marketing, it's the opposite, ride the similarities, so you can go "it's like that game you like... but with that instead of that". I agree that if you just made a worse version of another game that already exist, why would anybody want that, but that's a problem with your game, not your marketing.
"Holy crap, Joey, This looks amazing! I would play that to death!" I get that kind of response everytime i show a friend my game. Maybe it's about time i make it available to download even though it's still a WIP
Yes! You are back :D! From the many there are you are actually my favourite gamdev youtuber! I hope I will get the marketing right, for my upcoming game, but some good tips. I knew them already, but sometimes they get out of your sight, so good to refresh, thanks for that.
dude so happy to see you coming back! Love your new paste and confidence! Hope you disappeared for the best reasons. Welcome back. hope to see more of your content :)
"i spent 4 years working on a platformer because i was terrified i was making a horrible game, i could have done it in 6 months"--- I felt that remark deep in my soul lol
This was really informative and inspiring. I'm hoping to at least get some people to download my first indie game when it comes out in a couple months. The hardest part for me to understand is how you get exposure to the public without spending millions of advertising dollars.
7:55 My biggest worry is that not only am I a black horse candidate, having never made a game before this, but also, my game is very unique, and is an rpg that has some mechanics that are dubiously alien to the rpg genre for combat: pong. Furthermore, my game has point and click aspects. My game is so genius and innovative that I don't think there will ever be an audience for it.
Its so true, as the developer of a game we can see a mistake and we set out to make sure we fix that to make it perfect and like you said Tim, people wont even know that small thing at all, if the gamer has a smile you have already succeeded😎😗
Long time no see on your channel Tim. Glad you posted a new video! Great advice here but it seems I already practice most of it. Still there were a few things said that certainly helps. I have 4 games currently in the works plus a dlc right now. Two of the 4 are in beta and 2 are in alpha 🙂
Great video, really good information. I like you Tim, you are an inspiration for me while I learn my way in gamedev but man I love Rick, he's the one who's been effectively teaching me to make games through his Udemy courses. Thank you both!
@Game Dev Underground What about finding Developers interested in joining your game? I've been working on one just for a basic prototype. I know exactly what I want and how I want it. Working on World Machine to import onto UE4 and use assets for modders for a specific game. Basically what Hell Let Loose has done but a completely different setting.
But with the friends, they may not want to play the game because they don’t like the genre or maybe they don’t like games or something not just only quality
❤I did like this. Feedbacks are part of SWOT analysis. Best ones are from Streamers. ❤ Thats really the best way for sucsess and go on. Love you comments here.❤ 10/10 pinnailed for indies like me.
Great video! Problem is when there are no games that are similar to mine. Or at least, I can't find them. Anyone know a side-scrolling RTS game that is NOT a Tug of War game?
