I really liked this video! Good to see you outside the studio. Most of my photos are done on photowalks. Portland Oregon is a very lush, verdant place so I have enough content. The colors in this video are really vibrant. I love taking photos of old barns. One thing I just learned about the LUMIX G9 was Continuous Live View was turned off. I’m just learning manual mode, and I expected the LCD to reflect exposure changes like the Sony A6400. Once I turned this on, it made a world of difference. I thought APSC was so much better than micro 4/3, but I’m learning it’s better reach in birding and depth of field advantages

Haha, yes you heard that right. There’s a story to it, actually. I thought one got lost/stolen at the skatepark last summer. So I bought a replacement several weeks after scouring the house, only to have my original G100 show up in a dark corner of the basement 5 months later. It had rolled out of my gear bag. It was so micro, I didn’t see it. 😂

Great to hear from you again, Karen. What are you shooting with these days instead of Lumix? And what made you switch? @@ImageMaven I started birding the my GX85 but when I realized it was going to be a serious hobby I set out and bought some used gear - the Olympus EM1-markiii, the 300mm pro with a 1.4TC and the Olympus 40-150pro for birds at short range. The Leica/Panasonic 25mm lens is the only other auto focus lens I own. I think the pro capture on the Olympus was what really sealed the deal for me. I only use the Olympus gear for fast moving subjects (animals and sports), for everything else I traded the GX85 for a Leica SL 601 and a growing collection of vintage manual glass. The SL is my favourite camera. It gives me the film experience on digital with an EVF that will blow your mind. It’s a 6 year old camera but it doesn’t feel like one. If you ever get a chance to try one do so. People often say that the Leica cameras get out of your way and just let you shoot. I find that statement to be true for the SL. Used, the SL is about the same price as a new Panasonic S5, so not out of reach when paired with cheap (but still very good) vintage glass. For me, the slower pace of using a vintage lens in combination with the SL inspire me to be creative. Next time you are in Ontario we will have to go out to find some birds and then head into the city for some street shooting fun :)
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven Год назад
How exciting to hear all of this Karen! I have been curious to try Olympus and the new OM for birding. Great choice on the Leica too. Sounds like a lot of research went into both camera choices. I will come to Ontario again one day! I have friends out your way so I will definitely take you up on your offer of a photo outing. In the meantime, enjoy your new cameras and I’ll watch for your photos on Instagram 🤗

@@ImageMaven Thanks Marlene. I'll contact Downtown Camera on Monday. Due to my left hand being injured at birth I use this ' fingerZoom ' & a right handed finger to work the zoom ring of my lens. The 1st Leica 100~400mil lens that I got - new - had a stiff zoom ring. I talked to the camera store manager who said "no problem" but to give him 10 days before returning my purchase. When I did go in he had 3 new Leica 100 ~ 400mm lenses sitting on the counter. " Try them all & then take your pick " he said. The middle one had the smoothest action. That's how to build a good relation ship with a customer. Thanks again for your detective work. Ray

When I started getting into macro for small animals and fungi late last year, it really expanded my skills, attention to focus and depth of field, and just the fun factor of photography. I was mainly doing birds in flight but became more versatile and able to apply some of my techniques to snakes. I don't get to travel too much having a kid and work and everything, but just getting into another dimension of photography alone has kept me in it.

Hi Joe. In Canada it’s not illegal to photograph random people in public. But it’s a courtesy to ask permission. Publishing that photo is a different issue.
@darkerbrother1
@darkerbrother1 Год назад
It all depends on where you are in North America. If you are in a tourist area it’s ok. If you are in an area that is security sensitive. It’s a big no no. For example. The larger airports have dedicated areas where you are allowed to take pictures of take offs and landings. In the lower 48 we are over protective of children. If you don’t no how to blur the background when taking pictures. You are going to have a problem.

Hi Marlene, Peter here. Is image quality of Lumix G100 better than Lumix DMC GX85/80? And a viewfinder? I had Lumix DMC gx85/80, so I just wanna know. Thank you for the answer if you know it. Greetings. P.M.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven Год назад
Hi Peter, You might have to check the exact specs on the Panasonic website or DPReview.com for those answers. I do know that the 20MP sensor of the G100 is the same as the G9. But the G85 is an older camera, and 16MP. So there is a difference there as I'm sure there will be in the viewfinder as well. Sorry I couldn't be more help! Hope you find your answers.
@petermartinka9274
@petermartinka9274 Год назад
@@ImageMaven Hi Marlene. Thank you for your response. If it is the case that the G100 sensor is the same as the G9, then that is good news. Yes, I know and watch dpreview, but even so, one does not always find specific answers. As for the gx85, I've noticed that dynamic range is sometimes an issue, but I expected that. But what annoyed me was the viewfinder. Because I take photos 99% through the viewfinder. For now, have a nice day. PM

Hi Marlene. This is Peter. I have a question. When I set the Natural profile on the Panasonic G9 and change the values of Contrast, Sharpness, Noise reduction, etc. will it also be written to the RAW file?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven Год назад
Well Peter, I had to test this for myself as I don't usually shoot RAW files.... But NO, it doesn't matter which Photo Style you use, it only affects the JPGs, which are processed in-camera. If you shoot raw files in every Photo Style - even the Monochrome ones, they all look the same on the computer. Your previews might look different when you playback in-camera, but in reality all the raw files are the same. Raw files need to be completely processed. This is something that you should test for yourself too. If you shoot video though, it's important to set up your Photo Style, as video capture is a series of jpgs, at least it is in the Lumix G9. Thanks for the question.
@petermartinka9274
@petermartinka9274 Год назад
@@ImageMaven Marlene, thank you very much for your reply. I will have to study how the RAW actually works. Well, jpegs are compressed files, I'm afraid it won't give me one dark spot in the dark areas. On the other hand, maybe my fears are unfounded. It seems to me that the natural profile has very good shadows. :) P.S.: Are you not planning to upgrade? For example, on the GH6 or the fullframe S5? You could teach the rest of us how these cameras work.
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven Год назад
Hi Peter, The only upgrade I'll make is if the G9 is upgraded, and maybe get a the new 9mm lens. I'm not a videographer. I'm a photographer who happens to make the occasional RU-vid video. Plus, I'm not into FF anymore, or shooting raw files. I was in the past. I sold all my FF gear 10 years ago. Never looked back. I'm heading for retirement soon, so I'm planning to keep things small and inexpensive. But having said that most Lumix cameras share the same or similar functionality, so you won't need much extra help to learn the new cameras. My method to learn the cameras is to study the Advanced Owner's Manual. With that and some practice, I can pretty much figure things out. Anyone can do this! So don't give up and keep practicing to find what works best for you. You got this!
@petermartinka9274
@petermartinka9274 Год назад
@@ImageMaven Marlene, thank you for the long answer. I was away from my computer for two days, so I'm writing now. I understand. You already tried full frame and came to the conclusion that you don't need it. It would be interesting if they upgraded the G9. On the other hand, you are right. The control of Panasonic cameras will be approximately the same. Okay. Have a nice day. Peter.
