HOW TO GET PERFECT GOLF SWING TIMING

This tip will show you how to get perfect golf swing timing so you can hit long and straight shots.
In the golf swing you have your release which is the hinging and rehinging of your wrists (I refer to this as the arm unit). You also have your body coiling and uncoiling. Right now your swing has timing between these two elements which allows you to return the clubface back to the ball consistently.
Now what would happen if you were to work on either your release or your body coil? Doing so would mess up your timing causing you to hit pushes/push fades or pulls/pull hooks so you would have to learn how to get your timing back.
This is an important tip for golfers who are following my instruction because one of the main things I teach is how to speed up the body as the person swings. In doing so, students tend to drive their lower body way too hard and lose their timing. This tip will show you how to get perfect timing in your swing and start hitting long and straight shots. It's easier than you think.

Paul, i’ve never met you, I’ve never taken a personal lesson from you, but everything you have provided online that I have followed over the years has made such a tremendous difference and really helped me develop so much enjoyment in this game. Thanks for all you do on here and know you’re making significant differences whether you know it or not!

The body swing program has helped me tremendously, thank you... In this tip I was hoping you would demonstrate how to get the hook going down the middle swing by swing until it wound up perfect.... I have a two-way miss and I am almost positive it's the timing

So glad it's helping. Thank you for your support. I truly appreciate it. Well I did say what to look for. First is a huge hook. You add some body and it is less of a hook and so on until it's dead straight. If you blow it right that's too much body so you would slow down. If you hit 2 in a row right I would go back to rolling and hooking. So roll and hook until you rarely ever hit shots with slice spin. Literally do the roll over drills at home daily. This shouldn't even take you a week to master. I have had people 4 repetitions. So a week would be a lifetime of rolling. See this as mastering step 1. Then you start adding body (while still feeling it release) for step 2. Watch the ball. It will tell you exactly how hard to fire the body. It doesn't get easier than that.

WOW! Paul you continue to amaze me with your simple teaching! In my journey with your tips, and totally changing to the effortless swing, I realized I wasn’t firing my hips correctly because my right heel barely came off the ground in my finish, so I concentrated on the belt buckle facing the target as well as “feeling the heel “ and consequently Ive hitting pushes and push fades(but not all the time, mainly with driver and 3 wood) and I couldn’t figure it out. This tip explains it! Thanks, gotta go, I’ve got more to work on😉

It is until you have trained your wrists to release the club rarely every putting slice spin on your shots. If you are not slicing it why would you be thinking of rolling it. You have it mastered. So at this point you are thinking body. Watch your ball and it will tell you exactly what to do.

Always loved your videos, they helped me so much. I just did some tests on trackman. If I hit my 8 iron "normal" my swing speed is around 77 mph. If I take a "long pause" and delay the transition at the top as long as I can, the humble 8 iron swings comfortably at 90mph, occasionally up to 93 and I am more accurate. I play with one arm only, I wonder what is going on, it's like there is some crazy "alignment" going on during that pause that I seem to need, that just skyrockets my accuracy and speed by an insane amount. Everything feels so much more effortless yet more powerful and timed after the pause.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 2 года назад
Well that gives you time to get your body moving. Up and down too fast and you have not time to switch. Plus, hesitating take the tightness and hit impulse out too. Keep doing it but don't make the pause too long. Just long enough to get the lower moving. Watch: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-YMj0fgJe48M.html

So if I understand this correctly, your advice is to use our shoulders to initiate the swing when we are focused on "Step 1" (the unhinging/wrist turnover) stage (keeping our lower body out of the picture, or at least not dominating the swing)? And then after hitting about 10 shoulder-initiated swings that result in hook spin, incorporate the lower body as the primary driver/source of power and modulate it to "time" the unhinging/wrist turnover in such as way that the combination results in straight shots (or shots in the direction and shape for whatever the situation calls)?

You need to use your arms to train it to roll. It's going to happen on it's own. I have had people literally master this in 4 repetitions. So you roll and roll until you eliminate all slice spin. Do the drills below daily in practice swings or at the range. Daily not once a week. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M868QsTlGt4.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p4vASmOzkPg.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N-nGM6yN790.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yHEv7G9Z5-0.html Once you can do that you are switching to legs and hips still feeling the release happening. Just get every ball hooking. Once you can do that the release is working. At this point you switch to thinking about starting your body first. So you hit the top and fire the lower. As you are approaching impact you FEEL the release you have just be working on. Can't think of 2 things at once. So think legs and hips and feel the release. Watch your ball. It will tell you if you are doing it or not.

Hey Paul, working on your tips and seeing improvement. I'm 72 and am noticing that my hips are starting to become sore. My hing and unhing is good and I am getting the hips out of the way. What tip (other than stretching) can an old guy follow to use the full body swing but reduce hip fatigue? Thanks.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 9 месяцев назад
Anytime I have had anyone complain of hip pain it is when they finally start turning all the way through into the follow through with the hips perpendicular to the line. Once they have done it a little this goes away. Anyone else is from driving them too hard. You need to build this up over tip. People always want to swing at 100%. Build it up and get used to it. I would be doing this in daily practice swings at home. Also, check your left foot make sure it's turned out so you can turn through easier.
@hkb1467
@hkb1467 Год назад
Super, Paul - except I would think that ideally you would want as full a hip turn as possible and then speed up the arm/hand release to catch up, as opposed to reducing the power in the hip turn to accommodate a slower release - do you agree, Paul? (And what about the ‘knuckles down’ move to impact - is that needed?) Thanks!
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf Год назад
Yes, I want the hips firing very quick/hard. If the person blow it right I know they can actually fire the hips. So now I would switch to the release to get them hooking it. Once they hook 5-10 in a row I would then go back to fire the lower and BOOM dead straight in all of 5 mins. Forget knuckles down. This is crap that the average person will never do. This is an arms thought. Keep in mind a tick on a clock is 6 degrees. You try an purposely do knuckles down and you will hit it everywhere and anywhere because there is no way you are going to repeating this exactly the same every time. I get this and I have never worked on it ... ever. So work on the fundamentals and look like a pro as you swing. If so, you will do it too without thinking about it.

Paul appreciate the video. Just curious on your thoughts for us 15 handicaps who are still learning this swing. I plan on playing for a year or so with "slower" lower body movement to keep my upperbody in sync. I am getting really good results with that and don't feel I need the extra distance at this time. My 6 iron is carrying ~185 which is more than enough to play the blues at my club. Anyway just wanted to check in and see what you thought about keeping it slow and controlled for a period of time before trying to ramp up lower body speed with early release.

hi Paul, Just so you know i have been playing golf on and off for many years i am 65 and have never really improved beyond lets say (week end Warrior) over the last 12 months i have really got back into golf, after watching maybe 5000 golf videos and making a list of tips to take to the course each week with maybe 5% making a difference. Just recently you made it onto my list of tips to try out , the tip was loose arms and wrists creating a whip and a release. OMG i thought my first attempt was a fluke, i then began to practice this more and improved my timing of the Kinetic chain and whip at impact to a balanced easy Finnish. My distance has gained 40 yards easy , my dispersion is better and i have less fatigue. After all these years i now have a golf swing settled in my head.

I do not feel them at all because I have done this for a long time. For the average person it depends what stage they are at in learning what I teach. If you are putting slice spin on your shots you roll it from the top getting every ball to hook (roll over drill). Once you can do this you swing to body rotation to straighten it out. If you are working on body you are not rolling from the top. Instead you are allowing it to release closer to impact. Stages ... see what I am getting at? Get step 1 then move to step 2.

I’ve been working with the body swing for the past 3 years. As a person who did the digital tutorials and also the short game tips, I can assure you that this program works wonders. 3 years ago I played a round and shot somewhere in the 120s and had to buy a box of balls on the turn. It was enough. The past year, I have broken 85, hit a hole in one, hit my first eagle and am more consistent than ever. For the past 2 months though, I started to notice that I was coming over the top a bit. You can tell when the ball goes 150 yards forward and 2 holes to the right. I felt like I was doing everything. I was rotating, followed the backswing tips, hinged at the top, used a downswing trigger by turning my buckle, but I kept slicing every club and even topping them. This tip of rolling over was one that I kept just breezing over and tried everything else besides this. I came back to it out of frustration at the range, because nothing else was working. After doing the 10 hooks, I added back my legs and my shots had power and contact was flush. It even helped my pitching and low punch shots, which is a bonus. These tips are awesome and I couldn’t thank Paul enough for sharing his knowledge. Just remember that a swing doesn’t transform over night! Keep practicing and have fun!

I have to add to this post. I've been using Paul's method for a few years now. I to, started hitting push fades. I also glossed over the tip of releasing the wrists from the top. Always feared it would activate my old ott arm swing that I used for 30 years. I guess we underestimate our brain's ability to understand task. I thought this would never work. I reluctantly tried it. It really does work!!!

Why not just have a strong grip and just drive the lower hard? I simply cannot release the club. I.e. rolling the wrists over
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 2 года назад
Well, if you don't fire as hard you hit the ball off the planet left. Try firing your body hard when you are over 60. Good luck. You can't release the club. Doubt that as I have been teaching people how to do this for 31 years and never had an issue. You are trying to do it at impact when you have to do it from the top. This is a fact. So you release it early and get it hooking then you add body rotation to straighten it out. Thanks for the support. I truly appreciate it. The hook is super easy to fix. You fire the lower first and the hook will straight and potentially turn into a draw. If you still hook too much you need to neutralize your grip. Chipping is easy. It's a stroke like putting. If you can putt you can chip: Chipping is easy. It's a stroke like putting. Ball back instep. Hands forward. 3-4 knuckle grip. Weight forward. Stroke it like a putt.

Paul, Very helpful but where does all your club head speed come from swinging so effortlessly. What is your top clubhead speed? You're the best. Thanks!
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 2 года назад
You get the speed through having looser wrists. This arm unit is then attached to your body which is rotating. Turn faster ... hit it longer. In no way are you hitting with arms. This tightens the wrists. The other week I was at 117mph but I was really moving my body hard. Normally I want to be around 110mph. I will be able to hit it 280 on the fly for a long time. Watch this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-O9jr3G1FF6M.html This is the difference between what I teach versus the hard/fast swing younger players are doing. Hi Paul Golf Guru Wilson, Walked 9 yesterday to get mostly pull and push fades. I went out in my yard today (only have 80 yds to play with so, I use foam balls) and slowed way down to hit a good dozen pull hooks in a row using arms only. At first it wasn't working but then realized I need to start rotation sooner(about a foot before the tee). Then only added just a small bit of body and they went straight. I just get distance hungry and speed up the body but, they start going fade again. At this point, what should I be concentrating on?
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 2 года назад
Focus on rolling it and see the good in the shot not the bad. If you are hooking it the release is working. Need to add body. If you are pushing it you are firing too hard but at least the body is working. Need to slow down and work on the release. It's a balance. What you really need to do is master half (wrists). If you rarely hit it with any slice spin then you would only ever half to think about using your body (this is what I am doing). Watch your ball and it will tell you how much body you need. Then you memorize. If you hit it everywhere then you have to keep working on both things. Get down to a singular thought ... body.

I just answered this for someone else today. Here is what I told him: Glad you are working on it. For most people when they go to the course they start hitting. You need to try swinging at 50% on every swing. Your 50% is probably 70-80%. Once you get that pace in your mind the other thought is ... repeat. Keep in mind when you play there are different thoughts, pressure, excitement etc. It is really easy to think distance out there. So don't pick distance targets meaning pick something super close or way in the distance as your target not something at 250 let's say. You do a few 50% practice swings thinking of this pace. Then you apply this pace to your shot. I would be reminding myself that I am not Tiger Woods. I need to swing at a level I can swing at. To get it super consistent (once your hinge/rehinge is working and you are not putting slice spin on the ball) you are focused on the center (body) coiling and uncoiling. This is way less movement versus what your arms are doing so it's very repeatable. This is the tip I need you thinking about: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-W8nv99yLMH8.html You coil allow it to move your arms into position. You uncoil allowing your arms to follow. In no way are you hitting or helping the shot. If you do not hit or help you don't twist the face. I am literally feeling that as I swing and just allowing it to swing wherever it wants. Think about what I just outlined. Take notes. You do that and you will play incredibly well on the course.

Yes, people need to see the shot differently. They are always dwelling on the negative. I see the positive. A push would be the right path but the face is square to the path not slightly closed. So all you would have to do is work on the release and you would have a perfect draw. So you need to do daily roll over drills to master it. Maybe strengthen the grip just a little. I like lefties drawing it so anything that gets the face 1-2 degrees closed to the path is great for you. So the have the 2 lines of your grip pointing at your left shoulder. Then roll constantly until you get the ball falling right with draw spin. Did you see this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-mp8MriLZ4sg.html

You are going to think hands and arms and roll them from the top until you hook about 10 in a row. Once you can do that remember the feeling but you are switching to the legs and hips. You watch your ball. Pull/pull hook = quicker legs and hips. Push/push fade = less legs and hips. Straight = memorize and keep doing this forever. So after you can hook it yes you are firing your legs and hips ... fast.

It's kinda eerie sometimes how video notifications pop up on my feed that are relating exactly to what problem I'm having. I think my leg muscles are becoming stronger and more athletic due to practicing golf all the time and my really physically demanding job(especially for my lower body). Ive been hitting push slices and I haven't done that in a really long time. It's very frustrating when you practice every day for that to be happening. I kept thinking that I know I can't be over the top of my plane because I shallow the club and I can literally see the blur approaching the ball exactly in the manner I want. I was trying another tip I saw where you kinda delay your hips from firing so your arms can catch up, but it feels awkward and I don't want to have to be thinking about slowing anything down in my full swing, so I'm going to give this a try today sometime.

The issue I’m having with the body swing is having it perform under pressure. I understand tension is a swing killer, much easier said than done when someone says “just stay loose”. Tips to make the body swing perform outside the Range would be greatly appreciated.

Paul, great stuff but your hip movement looks like a spinning out move. I am sure it isn't in your real swing but when you demonstrate it is looks like your right hip moves forward toward the ball and I am told this is a no-no

Since watching your videos I've been trying to go from an upper body swing to using my hips and legs. I seem to be hitting the ball further but, I still struggle with pulling the ball. I don't hook it but miss the target left. I'm assuming I release too soon but I don't ever push or slice the ball. Do you have any suggestions or drills I can use to combat the pull? Maybe another video?

Glad you're back. Could have fixed you in under 5 mins. This is the tip for you. Hear what I am saying in it. Spin and direction. Fix the spin then get the direction. It is that simple. As for The Body Swing I can literally make anyone look like a tour pro in 4 moves plus your grip and set up. Who else is going to say that? No one. I should literally have a line up down the street. Just got to do them. That seems to be the hard part. People just want to smash golf balls as hard as they can. Take away the balls for a month or two and do daily practice swings hitting the positions I teach. You can still play and work on your short game. Then add more balls later once you get it. I wanted to prove my theory of not hitting balls. Took a guy from 95 to 75 in 2 months he never hit one ball. So be focused and you've got it. Use this tip to tweak it. Done.

@@paulwilsongolf The funny thing is the last time I was committed to the body swing I got tons of compliments on how my swing looked. I just couldn't stop it slicing so I gave up. I wish I hadn't, but glad to be back now. I'm going to go back to the beginning of the course and refresh everything, but I just went outside with a few whiffle balls and an 8 iron and watched my ball flight. Concentrated on making them hook and then sped up my hips and it straightened them right out! I literally said "Paul's a genius" out loud after I hit the first one straight! :) Thank you for keeping things simple while also helping me to figure out how to self-correct by watching the ball.

Paul your videos are straight forward, I enjoy watching and returning to them like a manual for golf itself. My question for this particular video lesson is - how do we adjust our release ( before or after our hips) if we are not supposed to feel the arms? .. what does release feel like? I mean , I know we know when it happens, but how do you actually cue yourself to feel release without using the arms or wrists to search for a release point? I hope this question makes sense.
@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf Год назад
You are manually rolling the wrists until you rarely ever hit the ball with any slice spin. At this point you have mastered the release so you know what it feels like. Once you can do that you switch to powering it with the body. You also feel the release through impact. So you are thinking body and feeling release. Your last step if turning the arms off completely. You are trying to turn them off before you have mastered the pieces. If it were me I would be rolling the wrists daily until mastered. I would be doing this at the range and home. This would take me all of a few days as I would be doing this thousands of times. Now I have half of the swing. Then I would be switching to body. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-5_O0H2QNFo0.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Xk7t9yHCO-I.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-7olBqwXF3Ik.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6ZeTqcz2pmE.html

@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf Год назад
Glad you like them. I appreciate the support. You are rolling it with every club until you get rid of any slice spin. This is with all clubs but keep in mind it is easier with shorter clubs plus once you get under and 8 iron you are not really going to get hook spin but instead you will get pulls. I would suggest doing it with 7 iron then up to driver as soon as possible. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-M868QsTlGt4.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-p4vASmOzkPg.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-N-nGM6yN790.html ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-yHEv7G9Z5-0.html

For sure. This is exactly why I did this tip. Over the years when people find me and jump right in they may hear about turning off the arms and firing the lower body to power the swing. Problem is they fire the legs at top speed and hit push/push fades. This tip explains what to do to hit it dead straight. Stay focused. If you have the ability to fire your legs hard then you are halfway there. Get the wrists working and you will hit it better than you ever imagined with no effort.

@paulwilsongolf
@paulwilsongolf 2 года назад
Very good. So you need to keep doing the roll until mastered. How do you know when it's mastered? You rarely ever put slice spin on it. At this point you know you are going to release it no matter what you are thinking about. So you switch to legs and hips. You fire them and watch your ball. [Pull/Pull hook = more legs. Push/Push Fade = less legs or loose the wrists again. Dead straight = memorize and repeat this forever.
