A horticulture major and interiorscape here. Just a Warning: using hydrogen peroxide on soil for long periods of time can destroy the bacteria in your soil. No bacteria = nothing to help break down organic material into usable nitrogen. A good alternative is using diatomaceous earth which is an organic way to get rid of gnats.

Diatomaceous earth is one use though, once it’s wet it’s useless, I’d say a treatment of h2o2 every now and then won’t be bad for the microbiome, but plz don’t water with h2o2 unless you’re applying liquid fertilizer and not relying on organic bioprocesses

Omg omg im in tears thank you thank you thank you, ive been battling this problem in root rot,for years. I inherited these beautiful over 100yr old Christmas cactus im the 4 th generation owner, when my great aunt gave it to me it was in the original clay pot, i had to shatter the pot to not cause so much dammage, but iliterally fell apart. Ive tried everything but the fungus keeps on comming back. I asked my aunt when the last time it bloomed she said she decades, i did this today some of my older plants such as my 50 year old climbing vine and others were so sick ive cloned because one day it was healthy then the next day it was mush. I took the plant i had some ones that were bad i removed it out of the soil, rinsed the roots and put it in water with hydrogen peroxide mix and in 1hr all the black n the roots were gone and white n beautiful.

So, I wanted to share something with you and your viewers, maybe you can tag me in your next book? 😁 Sugar 🐜 will not cross over baby powder OR baking soda. The same rules apply with crawling bugs on your garden. Just do a complete circle around the base of your plant. A lot of insects and rodents cannot ingest baking soda (like rats) or they combust internally. You can apply baking soda directly on the plant leaves and the base of the plant. It's cheap enough. I use an old coffee can, like holes in the lid, and go to town sprinkling it all over my garden. Re-apply after a hard 🌧 🌦 or wind and if indoors just leave it.

Sad thing is, I have little baby apple trees, and the gnat larvae have murdered 12 of the first ones I planted. After that I moved my growing place inside and set my pot in the windowsill. They've still managed to kill one of my babies :(. The problem is I never see them around the pot I just see the bottom of the stem turn brown and the wilting leaves. At that point it's too late so I pull the sapling out and I can see those demon larvae munching on my plant like they aren't tiny murderers. I understand they gotta eat something, but can't they go munch on plants that can handle it?! My problem with the first 12 was overwatering, but now even waiting until the first few inches of my soil is completely dry they still find a way in. I heard cinnamon was supposed to keep them away so I make sure I can always see cinnamon sprinkled on the top, and I made a spray with lavender oil, lemon oil, dish soap, and water because I heard those were also supposed to repel it. Idk how it happened, but I think my little orange babies are a lot stronger. I have around 6 seeds in one pot because I know not all of them will sprout. One day I went to pick up the pot to water it and those nasty gnats started flying out and crawling around. There were at least 30 of them. I mixed hydrogen peroxide, water, cinnamon, and dish soap together and watered it. I probably added a little more soap and hydrogen peroxide than I should have because I figured if I didn't kill the larvae the plants were gonna die anyway. This happened a week ago and there have been no gnats since. One of my oranges managed to sprout, and it surprised me so much. I didnt think any of them would live.

Sand works too. Their eggs need to be laid directly in a food source (aka wet soil). They can’t survive if they’re laid in the sand. 1/4 inch layer is more than enough to prevent them from laying eggs.

Prevention - If you have fungus gnats, you're probably over watering. They probably won't show up unless it's hot and humid. Spraying neem and/or using it in/on your soil can also help. Keep in mind this guy is speaking generally - you always want to look into the needs of the specific plant you're growing when you're diagnosing problems.

Putting a quarter inch of sand on top of the soil will keep them from laying eggs. The eggs need to be directly in soil with nutrients, they can’t survive the sand.
@SalusAndSageTarot
@SalusAndSageTarot 2 месяца назад
can you still water the soil with sand on top?
@Brocuzgodlocdunfamdogson
@Brocuzgodlocdunfamdogson 2 месяца назад
@@SalusAndSageTarot absolutely. But you have to be careful how you pour the water. If you pour too much from too high you’ll just end up digging a hole straight through the sand. Pour slowly, close to the surface for best results. Over time the sand will harden and contract a bit. This helps it stand up better against the water but it’ll create some cracks in the sand, especially along the sides of the pot. If you leave the cracks open, the gnats will still be able to reach the soil. You can usually fix this by just running a finger along the crack, it should loosen enough sand to fill them.

I dont think thats practical. Like hydrogen peroxide works well on fungus. But exposure to light just turns it into water and h2 gas. So keeping it in a spray bottle means ur just spraying water

Organic vinegar works too

Vinegar is a herbicide so don't put it on plants, you could make a trap with apple cider vinegar, dish soap and water in a cup with plastic wrap over the top. Just poke some small holes and they get attracted to the fermented smell and drown in the solution. Just know that this only gets the adults and the larvae will stay in the soil which hydrogen peroxide root drenching eliminates them

Spray directly on to the soil is only going to make the top inch or so of soil wet especially with that amount of water ..what about the eggs etc deep in your plant pots you forget about them loool...this is defo not the correct way to use hydrogen peroxide
