Fungus gnats are one of the most common houseplant pests. We all get them at some point in our plant parent journey. They can be a pain around the house and a pain to get rid of. Here is my journey getting rid of my (pretty bad) fungus gnat infestation. It was certainly tough but I think we made it out the other side. Thank you for watching!

“Sorry fungus gnats... you had to go!” That’s been my motto for the past two weeks 😂 I get rid of them and they come back but it’s getting a lot better 👌🏽 thank u for this vid! It’s very encouraging!

after trying insecticides, traps, drying out schedules, cinnamon, peroxide etc. for months with little results, I decided to simply replace the soil and the problem was instantly resolved!!! all i did was carefully remove the old dirt from my plant roots and replaced the infested soil. This method was literally dirt cheap haha, and was a natural solution as well x :)

YEAH! Seriously one of the most effective methods as long as it's done carefully so the new soil doesn't get infected too! I'm glad you had such success!

This is a great video Emma very well done to you Thanks for sharing your experience. I just wanna know why does the fungus come in the first place ? In my case I think that the soil stay very well moist for a long time as I did not allow for the soil to dry out a bit before watering Then I had to treat all my other house plants as the flies went to other rooms. Keep up the good work loving your videos x
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 3 года назад
Thanks :) Yes the fungus gnats love moist soil so it's important to let at least the top of the soil dry out between waterings, if not more depending on the plant's needs

A great video, would the concuction of 1 for 4 of Peroxyde Hydrogene by armfull to my vermicomposting, I have stopped feeding the red wigglers worms for about two weeks, as you open the lights they dive in the soil, there is about 4-5 inches of soil in the bins, could this affects the health of the future generation of worms? Thanks again for your help and advise, Philippe

Unfortunately I'm not sure how hydrogen peroxide would react with vermicomposting. Might be worth taking a little test sample and giving it a go!

I have used your same method for about a year now. Worked like a charm. I still see the occassional gnat but only one or two. I started treating and isolating any new plants as well, on some plants I actually do the hydrogen treatment as a regular maintenance once every 4-6 weeks even just for root health. Good video!
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 5 лет назад
YES! These methods all together worked really well! Had my infestation not been so intense that i needed to repot, im sure it would have dealt with the problem. On my boyfriend's kentia palm that had fungus gnats just neem oil and sticky traps did the trick! And thanks!

Thank you for this vid! Sadly I can smell the neem oil on my plants weeks afterwards and just a swift of it makes me gag. :( Also need to be careful with using neem on orchids... one of mine absolutely hated it and gave me brown roots. I got my fungus gnats from repotting most of my plants with infected soil... I don't have the energy to do it again.
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 4 года назад
Ooh good point! I didn't realise that orchids didn't respond well to neem oil! Yeah I think my soil was infected too... Apparently you can sterilise it by microwaving or putting it in the oven. But I've not personally tried that so do some research if you want to try that method! Best of luck!

Good work you are persistent so are Fungus Gnats contaminated soil or starter pucks for clones too often have the larva in them . My tip is to use a layer of sand on the top of your grow medium , diatomaceous earth works well but costs more and requires more care in using ( a mask but we all have them now) and water from the bottom so a dry layer develops that will stop the cycle of larva dropping onto the soil and hatching . Hey! i’ve recently discovered that I have problem with fungus gnats on my pilea. Thank you so much for your tips! Do you think it’d work out with the neem- oil solution & then replacing the soil with another one? I’m right now trying out the apple cider vinegar with a drop of dish soap in small containers around the plant & also cinnamon on top of the soil. I’ve only discovered that I gave gnats on the pilea & none of my other plants, but I’m not sure 🤔
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 4 года назад
The apple cider vinegar will work the same way as the sticky traps. It will catch adults but no guarantee its before they've laid more eggs. Cinnamon should help combat the fungus as well. But I do think getting neem oil is a good idea. You can get pre-made sprays that work really well. I linked one I have previously used in the description.
@wegotthepower

Good Growing I’ll check it out! I’ve rinsed the roots gently & sterilised new soil that I bought & planted it in new soil so now I just have to wait and see... I couldn’t get off the last bits of soil closest to the stem but I did my very best. I hope it’ll work! Now I’m going to be a bit hesitant on watering it in the future though 😬 I took a spray bottle and sprayed water on it when it was planted. Hopefully neem oil is available for me as well cause I live in Sweden.

@@wegotthepower sounds like you've got it under control! Yeah I think over watering is one of the main culprits really.. I have to be more careful about that as well.. But I think neem oil should be available somewhere online for you. I got my first one from some German seller on amazon. Good luck!

Wait so today I looked under the tray where the water drains out of my agave, there’s also a screen in the plant pot anyways, I saw like 5 dead fungus gnats. I don’t really have bugs flying around my home. Do I have an infestation? I’m scared to repot my agave and Kill it. Also I have never seen bugs on/in my soil/plants before this.
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 3 года назад
Hmm it's tough to say. I think you would know if you had an infestation so I don't think you need to repot quite yet. Might be worth getting some neem oil spray to try (do a test leaf first if poss)

Hi there one thing you do is cook the soil in the microwave it will kill everything that can harm your plants. Yes it will probably kill all the nutrients for your plant but giving them food plants will keep them healthy. That really help me with all the pest.

Thank you for the hydrogen peroxide mix suggestion in the video. I had been using neem oil and yellow sticky pads, but things were getting out of control. The hydrogen peroxide mix was showing me some instant results of suffering fungus gnats. I felt bad until I picked up a plant for watering (that I didn’t even realize got infested because it was in a different room so I thought it was ok) and a damn fungus gnat flew off the plant and directly into my nose! No mercy for these jerks anymore! lol

@GoodGrowing

Yeah thats just a little bit of mould I think. You can scrape it off the top of the soil and bin it. It usually comes because the soil isn't drying out well enough between waterings. Typically harmless though

@@GoodGrowing I think most of the world could figure out what you meant, but some countries aren't familiar enough with metrics and might be looking for honkin' huge things if they didn't catch it the mistake. :) I found my infested plant.. it is a very old grouping of spiderplants. I think that the older growth that has died off gave them the perfect habitat. I have found nothing in my other plants that shared space with it, so I will leave sticky paper out with them for a couple of weeks to catch any eggs that may have been laid and will be washing the culprit outside and giving it all new soil. I do try to stay away from harsher chemical treatments, I have a cat that occasionally munches, but it is good info to have also. Thank you again. :)
@GoodGrowing
@GoodGrowing 4 года назад
@@MicheleBonna Haha yeah! I'll use a harder eye when editing! Glad you figured out where the infestation was coming from! Do beware that sticky traps will not trap the eggs laid. They just catch the adults flying around. I understand the desire to not use chemicals though. Repotting sound like a good option. And try to clear dead leaves away from plants because they'll rot! Best of luck!!

I haven’t been able to find neem - oil etc right now yet but I think I’ll go & try buying new soil & re-plant it later today & see if that does the trick.
