Thank you. I was so hopping you will be back. I found your channel when we got (very abruptly, I should add ) Belgian Shepherd puppy in October of 2019. I loved all your videos and then I realized there is no current content. I was so sad because I really think that you are very good. I say that after many private trainers and many youtube channels. And, we have a puppy now for 9 months. So learned and we made mistakes, of course. Yesterday, our dog just run out of accidentally open door and ignored " come" command for a while. He came back after a few min, but we were scared. I started looking for tips again and I was very happy to see your video. Thank you so much!! My hope is that there is a tip for teaching reliable " come" . It works at home as a charm, or from the backyard. But, then he dashed out yesterday. .wow...that was scary...

I'm getting my pup on Friday and have been binging these videos. They're the best dog training videos on RU-vid and I've been telling as many people as I can, just so he'll keep making them! Request for a video on bringing an adult dog home -- Do I walk her before going inside? Leave her alone? Bathe her?

Great information! Good to get an explanation of what to do in case things weren't taught optimally in the first place, which might happen if you were to adopt a dog from a shelter rather than getting a puppy. I got a question for you Ian, regarding something somewhat similar. In your excellent video "Dog training Secret: How to Use Progressions and Rehearsals Like a Pro!" you walk us through a progression system for teaching a dog to walk on leash where gradual progression and repetition is key. Now, what I'm wondering is simply how you would best implement this system of teaching when you already have a dog that needs to be walked several times a day. It's not realistic to avoid walks until the dog has progressed far enough to the point where going outside is the next step in the progression but I'm worried if going on walks without the same expectations/rules used when practicing walking politely on leash could sabotage the progress made when practicing? I hope this rambling makes sense, I had a difficult time putting my question into words.

Hi Alfred. Great question. We work through that by having different hardware setups. We teach the dog to walk on their collar and not to pull on their collar. That process takes time, and we need to be able to move the dog around the world in the meantime. In those cases, we put the dog on a harness, and it's ok if they pull into the harness because it won't interfere with your collar work. Eventually the collar work transitions out and replaces the harness for polite walking. In this paradigm, I actually get to have the best of both worlds: the harness is like a track suit and the collar is like formal wear. If we're hiking or playing frisbee in a field, we go harness. If we're walking downtown around the cafes and shops, we use the collar. I get the appropriate level of energy and obedience based on the context, what we wear, and what we do. @@SimpawticoDogTraining Thanks a bunch! That makes a ton of sense and is precisely the information I was looking for. Keep up the great content, it's (by a pretty long shot) the best I've found online when it comes to living with dogs! Clear, concise, considerate and to the point. There's so much BS out there when it comes to dog training and behaviour out there, from the draconian "old-school" methods based on debunked old texts about wolves and a time when animal welfare wasn't really a thing, to poorly thought out and incomplete "positive only" training methods from people who have misunderstood what positive reinforcement is. I mean, the latter are much better in my opinion, since they preach much more humane methods, but it's also somewhat frustrating when the response to problem behaviours is to simply ignore them rather than address it in a way that is still fair to the dog and will lead to a much better quality of life for both your dog and everyone around them. Well, I'm rambling again, so that's a good sign I ought to stop typing. I just get worked up thinking about how confusing it all was when I first began looking into dog training, before I found well-educated resources such as Patricia McConnell's, Dr. Ian Dunbar's and Karen Pryor's books and (of course) your RU-vid channel and website! Keep up the great work, it's a fantastic resource for dog lovers everywhere!

Love this video. So many people don't understand the difference between bribing and rewarding. My dog is 2.5 and he's off of food rewards alotgether. Now I do variable rewards randomly. He might get a treat. Might get verbal reward and petting or a toy throw. He doesn't even expect food anymore and just loves to do things cause he loves how I give him excited pets after.

Great video! I love your channel, as it has a lot of important and helpful information for dog owners, experienced and new ones alike! Could you do a video talking about, and correcting two things? 1) Getting your dog to stop pooping on your decorative mats, despite the fact that the dog KNOWS to go outside for his or her business. And 2) getting your dog to go out and do his or her business immediately and come back in the gljse immediately, instead of barking at something (or nothing at all), getting distracted by bugs flying around, smells etc. Thanks! :)

Your dog "knowing" to go outside is not always enough, you need to give him enough of an insentive to do it. Both of your points should be solved (or at least improved) by giving your dog a treat (that he definitely finds reinforcing) immediately after he does his business and another as soon as he enters the house every single time he goes. What if your dog knows you don’t have a treat and stops? I’ve done this for a while but my dog always doesn’t follow through once I say “yes! Good boy” and there isn’t a treat he backs up quickly. It’s been so hard to train him (had him over two years now) because he’s SO focused on the treats and food in general. He’s so food-obsessed.. if there’s food around he won’t listen. He snatched food off our plates when we first got him, doesn’t anymore... We finally got him to go to his bed while we eat but he’s starting to bark now while we eat because he isn’t getting any. He eats literally anything.. won’t notice if you drop food half the time like other dogs I’ve known because he’s so focused on your hands. My partners father fed him once and now he listens to him over me- literal acts like I don’t exist when he’s around. I can’t explain it but many people don’t understand and say “that’s just how dogs are” until they see it.. it’s not like any dog I’ve ever met. Amongst many other things. We got him as rescue and they didn’t know anything about him but we think he was abused/had to fight for his food because of how he backed away from us when we first got him and how quickly he eats and is with food. He’s really a great dog, it’s just he won’t listen with food in the picture or without it lol. Thank you!!

Great videos and mindsets - I'm feeling more confident about the Great Dane puppy we're getting soon :) Have you ever touched on jumping in any of your videos? I'd go at it with no touch, no talk, no ... and if he jumped on others, call him back to sit, then reward. I'd love to get your perspective though!

Ian! We've used your training videos for our 2 year old big guy and it's worked awesome. Question, any good resources by chance for training to curb or stop barking? Our guy barks whenever he's upset, wants to play, or is excited/playing with a dog. It's pretty brutal to try to ignore! Any suggestions! So we can get my guy to do commands if we have food (without lures). The problem is if he knows we don't have food, he is stubborn and won't listen. How do you get him to listen when you don't have treats/food?

@@SimpawticoDogTraining This is the same video I just watched and commented on. I don't need to lure our dog with treats to do commands. The problem is if I don't have the treat bag or other food he is pretty stubborn and won't listen. As soon as I get my treat pouch or bag, he does commands instantly. I guess the question is how to phase out treats to get him to listen without them.

@@gonzsuarez Oops you're right, I'm sorry. Well, for a while it's ok if they know you have treats on your person. As long as the paradigm is "do the work, and rewards will appear" you can continue building reps. That's the secret, really, is REPS. Do the reps of the behaviors until they're fast and almost mindless, and then just stop rewarding with tangibles every time. Mix it up. Make it unpredictable. Just because you HAVE tangible rewards on your person doesn't mean they're promised or guaranteed. It can generalize, yes. You'll have to take each behavior on its own and see how it's going. Once the concept of "perform to make reward appear" is taught, new things after that tend to move quicker. Good luck!

YES! As soon as your reliability is 80% to 90% in a specific context, you can roll back the necessity for food. Keep in mind that when you change the picture, you'll may have to reintroduce some training aids (like food rewards) to help generalize and proof it. For example, taking a behavior practiced inside to the outdoors may need some boosting. Also, keep robust reward structures in place right from the beginning, so that food isn't the centerpiece anyways. Oddly, my dog doesn't always want the treat. I have tried many different treats but sometimes hes just not interested. It's not like hes full or anything because I even tried training before giving him lunch or dinner. Any tips for someone like me?

I’m getting my puppy in the last week of august. I know you are in the NY area-ish. As far as trainers, do you have any recommendations in Northern California, or what I should be looking for in a trainer? I ask this as ive seen some training videos on here, do the complete opposite of your suggestions and I want to know what I’m looking for/asking for when getting a puppy trainer. As always, your videos are great

Thanks for the compliment! For looking for a trainer: the best resource is to point you to the trainer searches on the big professional organizations. All of these can be done with custom zip code searches. I'd start with the CCPDT: www.ccpdt.org/dog-owners/certified-dog-trainer-directory/ This is the Certification Council for Professional Dog Trainers. These will be probably among the most qualified. They'll all be CPDT-KA (like me) or CBCC-KA. You could also try the Karen Pryor Academy: karenpryoracademy.com/find-a-trainer/#!directory/map All of the Karen Pryor people will be certified through that school as KPA-CTP. And finally, you could give the Association of Professional Dog Trainers a try: apps.apdt.com/eweb/DynamicPage.aspx?webcode=TrainerSearch I'd do the APDT last because not everyone listed will be a certificate holder of some sort. That's not always a guarantee of high quality, of course, but the field is definitely full of highs and lows. Good luck!

In this context it's functioning as both. Because our terminal marker, "Yes," signals the successful end of the behavior, it reliably works as a release word, too. Thus, we don't use a secondary release word because it's redundant.

I think I have another problem: my dog would go for my feet, socks or slippers instead of doing what I'm asking her, so she's sure I give her a treat to make her stop. I don't know what to do. I really want to train her, but it's really hard right now. ☹️☹️

Well like you see in this video, once the expectation is created that opens the space up to insert more steps and expectations over time. At the same time, teaching something like a strong Leave It or Drop It can circle around and help in this instance, too.

I love your videos but here I see a flaw explain to me your process please. You put the dog in a stay then you did not release him you just marked him for the duration and he totally ran to you and broke his stay without a release word. That seems counterproductive to me

Great question! The marker word "Yes!" is called a terminal or event marker. The marker signifies that end of the behavior and the dog can move into reward. Whether this is Sit, Heel, or Stay, there's no reason to add an extra step. "Yes" effectively ends the stay, so an extra release word is completely unnecessary. That's like saying, "You're done. You're done" Incidentally, our Duration Marker is "Good" and you'll notice she didn't move when she heard that. So I was marking duration with "Good" and ending the behavior with "Yes." I know a lot of trainers use release words for Stay; we don't. Our end marker "Yes" technically functions as a release from behavior. ALSO we train right from the get go that dogs MOVE into reinforcement. They move into our space. This cultivates our engagement. So when Wednesday (my dog) was told her stay was over via the end marker, she naturally ran over for reinforcement. This is on purpose. She didn't "break the stay," because I TOLD her she was done. You can do it however you like, but it just seems weird because people don't do it that way for ANY OTHER behavior. It doesn't need to be different. For us, a release word for stay in addition to our End and Duration markers is counterproductive. I prefer to keep the communication system consistent across all behaviors. Hope that helps!

@@murwill1 with Stay, no. It always ends with "Yes." HOWEVER, I do use a Neutral Release Word-"Free"-for leisure time or at the end of a training session. It's much broader and tells the dog they can disengage from me, they don't have to give me prolonged attention, and they can pursue their own interests to some extent. So, at some point on a walk I'll say, "Free," and my dog doesn't have to heel anymore; they can just "Snoop and Poop" a bit. Or, after we're done training I'll say, "Free," and they can toddle off for water or go nap or whatever. This covers a macro block of time, though. For individual behaviors at the micro level, "Yes" globally communicates the current behavior is over, and that's all I use for that. Hope that helps! 😉
