Hi Guys :-D In this video I show you How to get rid of Root Mealy Bugs on your Cacti & Succulent Plants :-D Check out my other videos below on How to treat Foliage Mealy Bugs links in the description below on this video :-D
I’m so pleased I found this video! I found them yesterday on so many of my plants. I pride myself in keeping the foliage pristine not considering what goes on below the surface!! I thought I was going to loose a majority of my collection. I feel a bit more hopeful but it’s going to take so much time unpotting and repotting!
So sorry to hear that you found these annoying Root mealy bugs on your plants to but thankfully they are easy to get rid of and the rubbing alcohol kills them on contact, thanks so much Zoe for your wonderful comment and for watching, sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful new week ahead XXXX
Lovely video, thank you! I bought violets and a month later I've realized they are completely infested with root mealies. I didn't know about them. They spread to and infested my orchids too. So far it seems my large succulent collection is safe since it's in another room but I'm educating myself just in case. I plan to use your method on my orchids since the root systems are so simple. The violets are a loss, I'm afraid. I'm too worried about bringing them back into the house. A shame because they're so beatiful, but I'll take some leaves and try propagating them. Your cheerful, soothing way of explaining everything really put me at ease. I think you probably know someone watching this video is likely to be upset at the time, so thank you. 💕
So happy you enjoyed the video Christy :-D Root mealies are such a pain and hard to notice as they hide under the soil, propagating your violets from leaf is a fantastic idea, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic weekend XXXX
I know it's probably too late, but next time you might try propagating your violets by decapitation (sorry dont know a better way to say it). Just cut it off above the soil and put the top cutting on new damp soil to grow new roots. I do this every year to renew my violets. Good luck with your root mealies!
haha thank you so much Michele :-D thank you so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a terrific Thursday today XXXXXX
Thank you for this video. Have you ever used worn castings on your succulents and cacti? I read they can serve as a natural systemic for insects as well. Not sure if that's true.
Hi there :-D I haven't used worm castings but I have heard that many growers have great success using it as a fertiliser, thanks so much for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Sunday today XXXX
Yes Lyn, you do pretty much like myself, except I do use neem oil, and if during winter I discover them I throw the bag of infested soil into the wood stove, same for ants where they nest in the pots. Often times one is with the other, since ants farm mealy bugs of both types, above and below soil level. Very informative video! Thanks Lyn!
So happy that you treat mealies the same way too Clyde :-D and yes Ants love to farm mealies, mealies are the pain of us plant growers haha :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and Hans and I are sending you and Deb abundance of love and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle to Morris Park for a fantastic happy Monday XXXX
Oh no, the dreaded root mealies, I can’t stand them! 😡 They really have to be the worst because most of the time you don’t realise they’re there until it’s too late, good thing you caught this outbreak early. Thank you for the mention too Lyn 😊 Hopefully none of us have to deal with these pests too often but I guess with a large collection it’s inevitable we’re going to get pest problems. Thank you for sharing this very helpful and informative video Lyn 😊🌵☀️🌸
Root mealies are the WORST Daz, as you know LOL! they are a pain and well done on rescuing your plants and so happy that they recovered so well and re rooted them selves too :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and Hans and I are sending you and Edith an abundance of love and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic happy Monday XXXX
Thanks for your video on this! I think the reason I love cacti and succulents so much is because I can just make cuttings and save plants. I would also love to know if you have used hydrogen peroxide on soil and roots too- like other comments.
So true its fantastic that many of these plants can be saved by cuttings :-D I have never used Hydrogen peroxide myself but I do know of other growers who have had great success with using it to kill bugs and treat fungus on plants, I have not used it myself though
Root mealies are such a pain I agree LOL! thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic happy Monday XXXX
Hi Lyn, that's a very important process to take into consideration! Very good to know! Thanks for sharing this informative information! Lots to love to you Lyn and Hans! Hope you will have a wonderful afternoon!
Root mealy bugs are always such a pain for us plant growers, and its always a battle of the bugs haha, thanks so much Sylvia for your wonderful comments and support and for watching, and Hans and I are sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Malta for a sunny Sunday afternoon XXXX
Hi! I just found these nasty bugs in one of my plants. I just repotted a bunch of others and haven’t found any more, but I’m afraid they’ll worm their way in when I’m least expecting it. Would you recommend I use the Bug Clear on my whole collection? It can’t hurt, right?
Hi Al :-D so happy you enjoyed the video, I use Isopropyl rubbing alcohol to disinfect the table and tray afterwards, it works so well for disinfecting, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a fantastic Sunday XXXX
Hi Derek :-D our outside Summer temperatures are around 10-15 C / 50-60 F but our day time temperatures are not much higher either haha :-D inside the polytunnel it is a few degree warmer at night and rarely drops below 10c / 50F at night until mid to late September :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic happy Monday XXXX
Ugh, ants brought root mealies up to my entire collection on a second floor balcony this summer. It's too much for me to unpot, soak and repot hundreds of plants so I'm trying a soil drench on all plants I have indoors. I hate insecticides as I love insects, but it HAS to be done. Wish me luck! 😊👍
Oh no root mealies are such a pest but you are doing the right thing by treating the whole collection with a soil drench, good luck and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and have a fantastic Sunday today XXXX
Kalanchoe beharensis is one of my favourite succulents . You did a great job there ! I hate mealies ! Ugh ! :) I,m busy refreshing the compost in some of my oldest cacti that haven't been changed for years ....just to give them a little boost .
Thats a great idea it really gives them a good boost to change the soil every couple of years :-D so happy you love this wonderful Succulent too Daisy :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic happy Monday XXXX
Best way I've read is 49 degree water for 15 minutes with the whole pot submerged and the soil still attached. I've been looking into it again because I've found some on my windowsill sadly. Hope you're well
Ah Lynn please don't put your hands in systemic insecticide water. Nasty. The hot water will permeate the soil you couldn't remove and kill the bugs at 49c
Thanks so much for sharing your tip with the 49 degree water Alex, and root mealies are such a pest, so sorry you have found some on your plants too, I hope you are well too, and thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a wonderful Wednesday ahead XXXX
I discovered a few mealy bugs on one of my schlumbergeras last week which I treated with neem oil, and this morning I discovered my neighbouring monkeytail cactus has loads... I've done the rubbing alcohol trick and hope I'll get rid of them now, since I found I couldn't see all of them by eye (the perlite top soil doesn't make it easy). I had a question: is there a connection between the regular mealy bugs and the root mealy bugs? Are they 2 different types or if you have one, do you have to check for the other? Thanks for all your info Lyn, it is very valuable!
Mealy bugs are such a pain, and well done on spotting them as they can be so hard to see, yes the root mealies and the foliar mealies are two different types of Mealy bug, the foliar Mealy bug can also come in many different types but are usually larger in size than the root mealies, usually if you have Mealies on the foliage they dont go onto the roots, but they can often hide just under the base of the plants and also under the pots of the plants too but they dont live in the soil like the Root Mealy bugs do, but its possible to have both types at the same time, and I often lift mine out of the pots too and check over the root system if I find them on the foliage, they really are the pain of us plant growers lives LOL! thanks so much Nathalie for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you much love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a safe and sunny Saturday XXXXX
So i was repotting some Gymnos and found these buggers :x 36 plants infected i am now trying to fix. I cant cut and root so many plants. I have some systemic called Celaflor Careo, but it is a costly product and i dont know if it works... I did the iso dip, hot water dip, and they are now soaking over night in Nikotin tea, with castile soap, Neem, hydrogen peroxide and some systemic, the whole bucket smell like death :x.... It is so frustrating, i really dont want to cut all the roots :( Have you had success with watering neem for a period against root mealies, or did they come back? Best regards from Denmark !💖
Argh root mealies are such a pain for us plant growers, the good news is once you get rid of them they don't come back as long as you keep a close eye on them, I find watering with the Neem oil once a month in Spring and Summer keeps them away for good once you have got rid of them, the systemic I use is called Provado vine weevil killer, its one you water into the soil and it is excellent at killing root mealies as its a root systemic, it really works and last year I had all my Aloes and Haworthia come down with root mealies, there was too many of them to remove from the pot and I gave them all a watering with the systemic and it worked a treat, thanks so much Nick for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER to Denmark for a super Saturday XXXX
@@desertplantsofavalon Hello :) Do you know if the active ingridient in your Vine Weevil Killer are thiacloprid? Becouse then i think i might have found simmilar product here 😁 Best regards from Denmark 💚🌵
Hiii!! I just searched about root mealy bugs your video just popped up... there were root mealy bugs on Succulents...n I just washed the roots with tap water n dipped into neem oil solution n then letting the roots to dry out...is it okay? to do that
Hi Lynn I was wondering if you can recommend a way to kill mealies in the winter on cacti? All of my cacti have them and I would hate to chuck my entire collection.
Hi Melissa :-D at this time of year I like to use the Isopropyl / rubbing alcohol and spray them with this as it kills mealies on contact and is fast drying too, I also recommend the SB invigorator spray as it dries up fast on the cacti, if the mealies are very severe it may be best to use a horticultural Neem oil sprayed onto the plants, here is a link to the Neem oil I use and also how i make up the solution, you do have to re apply it every month but its very effective once it kicks in, : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PS2Ym8RDS9Q.html thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic Friday XXXXX
Does hydrogen peroxide work? I understand like a half water half hydrogen peroxide mix and water into the dirt will kill ALL bacteria and insects. Just curious I haven't had mealy bug in the roots before.
Hi Tristin :-D I have not used hydrogen peroxide myself but I do know a lot of the other growers locally here use it with great success for treating pests and fungus etc but I have no experience of this myself though
thanks so much for your wonderful comment and support and for watching, and sending you lots of love and happiness and PLANT POWER for a super Sunday XXXX
I have had the same thing happen to me too as I have been unsubscribed from so many channels I have been subbed to for years and I definitely didn't unsubscribe LOL! and a lot of my subs have said the same that they have been unsubbed from me too LOL! You Tube has a lot of computer bugs going on and I only get to see half of my comments too, I see them appear on my notification bell but they are not on the vids and they vanish LOL! its annoying and I have sent constant feedback to You Tube but nothing is done, Thanks so much for re subbing again Alex and I have just seen a notification that you have posted a new vid up on the Spider Farmer light and so happy that I will be getting the spider Farmer light to test out too and I am going to watch your video you have made now :-D thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you lots of love and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a sunny Sunday today XXXXX
thanks so much Aneta for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic happy Monday XXXX
alot of the things u used on the mealy bugs arent available here in my area apart from alcohol , are there anymore organic or homemade pest control u can advice me with ? And great vid keep it up
I have heard of good reports of using Hydrogen peroxide too for pests but I have not used this myself and would not be knowledgeable on this, but you could use a natural soft horticutural soap too that would be safe for the roots and plant, you can also spray the entire roots with the alcohol once you have removed as much of the soil as possible
Hi Lyn! I keep coming back to this fantastic video. I'm dealing with the dreaded root mealies again 😱 seems like my plants will never be free of them😂 what is your advice for treating cacti seedlings for root mealies, is it the same process? One of my windowsills has an infestation and there are seedlings there too so I'm going to treat all of the plants better to be safe than sorry as I have found these pests to be extremely talented at spreading to all plants in their vicinity 🤣 really hope you and Hans are keeping well and sending you both lots of love and plant power from Wicklow! 😃😁❤❤🌵🌵🌵xxxxx
@@desertplantsofavalon hi Lyn we are all keeping well! However Ted is a bit sick at the moment he may have FIV so we have to keep him indoors at the moment but we will be getting him retested in 3 months and fingers crossed he doesn't have it. Thanks so much for all of your amazing advice Lyn I so so appreciate it. You always save the day for me with these beautiful plants! Thanks so much as well of your amazing friendship and I also really look forward to when we can meet up again😃 lots of love and hugs to you and Hans from Kevin, Ted and I 😍❤🌵🌵🌵❤❤xxxxx
@@desertplantsofavalon thanks so much Lyn! Wishing you and Hans a very happy new year and and an amazing 2021😄 really hoping we can meet again soon. Lots of love and hugs from me, Kevin and Ted😊❤❤🌵🌱🌺❤xxxxx
Hi Lynn, is it ok if I ask for your help please? I have no one in real life that I can ask, I'll ask and hope you see this. My donkey tail is hanging on by a dried up stem so should I cut it where it turns moist again and repot it? Will it keep growing? I'm so lost, my friend has given it to me to save it but I'm not sure
Hi there :-D yes the good news is Donkey's tail is very easy to re propagate again, I would cut it as a cutting from where it turns green and then remove the last 3-4 little bead like leaves because the roots will come out again from where the last 3-4 leaves where, keep the leaves too as you can also root these and you will get new plantlets from the fleshy leaves
@@desertplantsofavalon thank you thank you thank you x100, you are a godsend ,and you're so far away but what great words of wisdom. I will let them callous over and then put them on succulent soil, which I do make myself with regular soil and sand and perlite. I cut the donkey tail last night and repotted it in soil so fingers crossed that it will survive and take. Bless your heart Lynn for helping me, hugs and love from Canada 💚💚💚🌵🌱🍃
Thats fantastic Diane :-D Alcohol works well at killing the bugs on contact :-D thank you so much for your wonderful comments and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle XXXXXX

Hi Lyn, ♥️ from Pakistan. I lost a few succulants few days back found holes in the leaves. I was about to ask about these bugs, I have such a small collection and cant afford to lose any more. What about ants? I found a pile of refined sand in my pots, lifted the pots and ants were crawling out from the drainage holes. Please help.
Hi Mahira :-D So sorry to hear that you have lost some plants, Ants themselves are harmless to plants but sometimes they can nest mealy bugs and because of this its best to keep them away as much as possible, I like to use Cinnamon essential oil on cotton wool and placed around the bottom and sides of the pots and this will help to keep Ants away as much as possible as Ants do not like the smell, here is a link to a video I made on How to use Cinnamon oil to deter Ants from your plants :-D ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dwSskxvkY-s.html thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a fantastic happy Monday XXXX
