Ashley is a soil scientist who has had a passion for plants since she was a small child. In the long summers as a child, she would garden alongside her grandmother and it was then that she realized her love for greenery. With years of great studying, Ashley had begun her post-secondary education at the University of Saskatchewan.
At first, her second love, animals, was the career path she chose but while doing her undergrad she realized that her education would take her elsewhere. And with that, four years later she graduated from the University of Saskatchewan with a bachelor’s degree in science and a major in Soil Science.
Some of Ashley’s interests are RU-vid, in which she posts informative videos about plants and gardening. The focus of Ashley’s RU-vid channel is to bring science to gardening in a way that is informative but also helpful to others learning to garden. She also talks about the importance of having your own garden and the joys of gardening indoors. Ashley continues to study plants in her free time and hopes to expand her RU-vid channel as well as her reach to up-and-coming gardeners.

Shower off the entire plant (i unpot and do the entire plant, leaf to roots) Add a drop or 2 of dish soap to a spray bottle with 50/50 isopropyl alcohol and water and spray. Let dry and repot. Repeat the spraying of soap and alcohol mix every 4 days for a month.

Or systemic pesticide always works for me and now I use pyrethrin insecticide every other month if I see pest using diy products is such a hit or miss sometimes they work but most of the time they don't work or burn your plants I even make tobacco water and it works great better then any diy insecticides or off the shelf product

Mealybugs are the main reason my fall garden fails. These bugs are very cold tolerant and seem to do well in the fall when they can infest my late season plants without warmer weather beneficial insects keeping them culled. They seem to love my brassicas.

Thank you! I’ve been battling mealy bugs on two marble queen Pothos that I love. It’s the worst. Take a break from the battle and you’re screwed - at least that’s been my experience. So many cracks and crannies! I’m going to start spraying spray with alcohol and get more consistent with water blasting.

could you also cover root mealies ? I struggle more with those and its a never ending battle :( especially on hoya. I even went as far as cutting my plants competely or removing roots and start all over. thx for making those informative videos :)

Last winter these abominations took over some indoor herbs I had growing in coco, and purchased from an Etsy shoppe. Being a noob gardener I had never seen these things, had absolutely no idea what they were, and (in true noob fashion) I googled ‘tiny bugs that look like trilobites’. Is it just me, or do they really resemble them?!? Anyway, those plants got tossed out, and that area of the living room is still devoid of plants. They completely grossed me out. As illogical as it may be, I’m paranoid of growing plants in that area now, out of fear they’ll return.

I have 2 orchids with these buggars. I found the plant highway that I was not at all emotionally attached to & immediately chucked it , and it's pot into the outside garbage. As for my Orchids I am becoming a studied and highly trained mealybug assassin. Thank you for your education.

Ashley, Nate said come so I did I see channels as books. Some I reread, some haven't got a chance to read yet. But like any great movie if I like it I watch it over and over. I have only had a flower garden and did ok. I turned the soil, took out the rocks, added fresh soil mixture and they did really well given being watered regularly. My spot gets mid morning to evening full sun. Right now I am studying for when I get my homestead so I won't feel so helpless. I am just a prepper preparing. Thank you!!! ✌️😎👍✝️🙏💜🌻🍁🥧🦃❄️🥶

I had no idea what the white fluffy stuff was on my Jade Gollum until out of curiosity I looked it up! luckily it has never touched any of my other houseplants. Can I ask please, will misting my plant kill the babies too?

If using isopropyl alcohol in a sprayer, I would use a wetting agent, similarly to JADAM's recommendation of using JWA (JADAM wetting agent) and JHS (JADAM herb solution) for infestations.

Soil borne species/anything laying in the soil/near the base this will work. Along with predatory nematodes.

I had some on an Alocasia I ended up putting it outside (to big to quarantine inside) I made my plan of attack but couldn’t get to it for like 5 days when I went to do a spot check I couldn’t find any. They apparently lost the battle with Mother Nature.

Dealt with the jerks about 5 years ago when I brought home a cute little succulent bowl.... I had never dealt with plant bugs other than the occasional fungus gnats. In the 80s/90s it didn't seem to be a thing. I can't recall how many of my plants it spead to, I usually have a couple dozen or more, but I only gave up on my Jade. I'm not gun shy when I ooo and ahh over store plant displays, lol.

I used isopropyl alcohol everyday on my jade for a year. I dutifully dipped a cotton swab in alcohol and went after every mealy bug I could find and hit the joints- this was a 25 year old, large jade. Even with my valiant, time consuming efforts, I did not win the battle and in the end I simply gave up and threw it away- sad. I have not replaced that jade and probably won't due to how hard that all was.

Hi. I spray mealybugs with pure soap. But they don’t drop off the plant and stays white even after the spray. How do I know if they are dead or still alive? i know that if sprayed with alcohol they will turn brown. But with soap they don’t seem to turn brown. so how do I know? Are there any visual cues?

I think, if I'm remembering correctly, a horticulturalist who used to be on CBC for some time, his name escapes me at the moment, used to recommend using the isopropyl alcohol in order to penetrate that waxy protection, after which you would use a diluted mild detergent, which acts as a wetting agent, that effectively drowns the mealy bugs since they no longer have that waxy protection. I've never tried it, but it made sense, so, perhaps something to consider. Just looked it up. It was Ed Lawrence. i think he was with the RBG as well. Not trying to appeal to authority. I could easily have misremembered the advice.

I avoid the detergents because it takes off the wax coating on the leaf and makes it easier for the sap suckers to get their meal. But you definitely could and it would aid in killing off the adults.

Copper fungicide does kill mealybugs but i don't recommend it bc u need higher concentration of copper which some plants cant tolerate like roses if u go then the recommended dose it burns the leaves so bad but my rose bush recovered after heavy watering

Against the babies and in the soil for the more tender ones yes. But the issue is the adults have such a thick exoskeleton.

Diatomaceous earth becomes ineffective as soon as it gets wet.

In my home garden, ants are transporting Mealy bugs. so transporting very fast and its literally killing the plant.

When u have a nursery they can be devastating to ur sales. I have read the males can fly? Alcohol does help. But u have to do over and over and over. They live on ur plastic pots. Trays etc..

I don't agree bifen works great on mealybugs just use real soap not detergent also bifen last for a month so you get one month of protection against pest
