1. He played an active Ibanez. 2. He has a distortion on, most likely a rat because he loved that thing. 3. He hit hard with his heavy gauge pick, he also had low action so it was naturally distorting.
let me add, Paul use to record all the slipknot songs wit a IBANEZ ATK (active), basically thats the base tone on that model, the preamp is amazing, i have a atk 305 and i tell you thats the secret! that is a inexpensive bass will be finded in reverb for something like $400 - $700$
this is actually pretty good, the only thing it needs is something like a transparent overdrive with the gain all the way down, just to give it that tight low end and extra “clank”
Actually what it need is lighter strings and low action, makes a world of difference for this kind of tones. I play 55-110 in drop B with the action as low I can go, works wonderfully !
@@krms2504 Yeah, that's exactly what I meant. I even chased down a peavey pro 500 (and got it for dirt cheap). I use a Sterling Ray34 and got the sansamp rbi in the rack, I can be spot one with that tone whenever I want to !
@@krms2504 on the sansamp or the amp ? Sansamp: Drive: 5/ Presence: 7/ Blend:4/ Bass: 6/ Mids and Highs: 2. Adjust level to something coherent (arround 4 in my case) . Tip: if tone is too dark or bright, adjust the blend, not the highs Peavey pro 500: most controls are to adapt to the rest of the rig but some key points: high boost and low cut engaged, contour cranked. Highs are on 2 on my unit but YMMV. For the parametric EQ i'd say noodle arround to find sweet spots but a heavy scoop at 800 hz is the core.
I mean I don't think that holds here since Paul is one of those bassists who don't need an extra string to be metal, he uses four strings all the time.
Stingray, loose strings, heavy cut on mids, tilt bass and treble just a bit and use an ampeg. Also, it’s good to mention that he did use a sans amp bass di. Edit: The gear I’m talking about is the stuff I use. I know about his ATK (I wish I had it) and that he used a Warwick as well, but you can get insanely close with just those pieces of gear.
@@krms2504 For recording It was more likely to be a Musicman, from some of the clips that came up on internet of the recording process. While his gig bass was Charvel 2B, which is just a regular Jackson alike PJ.
@@boogie3718 for what recorieng exactly? Also what Amps did He use at this point and earlier . I SAW him in the self tilted era With a ampeg can and Eden WT 800. Also where can you can you find those recordings . I only remember one where He Played a black Music man
Very slept on bassist in general, his knot lines are often octave mimics of the 2nd guitar parts but sometimes would poke out with unique lines or a bit*hin fill like in Vermillion or Duality! The Mate. Feed. Kill. Repeat. album has some of his slapping and jazz techniques and he's an absolute beast on it. Haha
Saw Slipknot live for the first time in 2008 from the barrier and was really surprised by how calm and methodically he played whilst everything else around him was bedlam.
2004 Valentine’s Day they opened with the Red Jumpsuits and 6 songs in Switched to the white Jump suites for the Iowa Album. Everyone was going crazy and it was one of the best knot shows I have ever been to
I would chew my fingers off one at a time, not having earned the right to play with a sound like that. Sounds like beating the crap out of a bass with trash can lids!😂
Thats a tough one, im actually in the process of recreating his rig. I cant afford a wal bass lol so one of the next best options i could afford was a G&L tribute L2000. Alot of his tone comes from his 2 channel rig(one signal from bass into GK 2001 amp and anther signal ran through a turbo rat distortion and a bass eq.)
@@cameron7135 I was in the same boat (guitar tho) with trying to get a mid 60’s Jerry Garcia tone. Found out he was playing a guild starfire 3. I checked online and they were like 3-4k lol. Gonna have to put the one off for a while.
The EQ seems right but definitely needs more of that super bright string high content. First in the series I’ve seen so far that felt a little farther off. Love these videos and your channel!!!
I don't think you listen to enough metallica then. Most of the bass lines in And Justice for All are similar enough to what the guitars are playing that it kinda just blends in and makes it more subtle.
Paul actually used VERY light gauge strings for the tuning they were in, which is a huge part of his tone. He used a .115 gauge for the low B, which is about what most people would normally use for C#. He also had super low action, half of his tone is literally just clanky fret buzz. And he used basses with active soapbar humbuckers. You'll never get that thick, aggressive attack out of a Rick
Not trying to bash digital amps or anything like that, but there's just something so much more satisfying about finding the right tone on a regular amp
Michael Todd from early Coheed and Cambria would be nice. Probably Good Apollo Volume One era would be best, that's when they became heavily Prog Rock epic in scale and he was able to play a lot tighter and fancier lines as opposed to their earlier Melodic Punk/Post Hardcore days.
Almost there! For Slipknot, you really need a bit of dirt in there. Paul used a SansAmp Bass Driver and a Rat at different times. I *think* it was Sansamp during this period, but either would likely be fine.
When tuning that much down, you want a Long-Scale Behs (>=35") and put the lower part of a 5-String Set on, eg. .135 String Size on the lowest like from Daddario EXL165. BTDT, pushed a 5 String Yamaha down to A/D/G/C/E 😅
Tim Skold's bass tone? I don't know how hard it might be to find some songs with his tone, but I think it might be possible to find something from Shotgun Messiah or MM.
for whoever wishes to know -- basically and 1st of all -- you should try it on an IBANEZ ATK bass, because that was his AXE, then the rest 🙏🏽 thx 4 this fine video ❤
I’d say to try to use a humbucker pickup that will help a ton too, that’s that added secret sauce though when he played a Warwick it didn’t have it but I’m sure that tone was different compared to the Vol.3 album
Just the slightest mids reduction, add a small amount of drive through something like a RAT pedal or any drive/overdrive pedal. Not a lot, a little goes a long way. And I think it would be a lot closer. But that's only through my laptop speakers.
You got the eq pretty much right, wouldn't go for the ricken (not without a proper low tuning setup). It would be better on the NOPE bass because of that fact. With proper setup you can push the drive\comp without it getting all over the place.
Any tips for training your ear to hear the different EQ, compression, pedals and effects etc, or is it a matter of looking up what they used and getting as close as you can?
Can get same tone from Ibanez basses. Tune down, pick, some overdrive.... i have a coupke Ibanez basses, an old Peavey (my main bass just cuz it plays so nice) all active.
Paul’s tone is looser and aggressive, but I like yours a tad bit more I admit - it’s a bit more crisp. Probably if you threw more overdrive on it, it would sound more similar but the Rick’s tone surprisingly handles drop tune well. 🤯
Duality nice, but you should’ve done the part right after the one you just did where Corey does the distortion vocals cause it’s more active Paul gray bass
Could you do one on Rand Forbes' bass tone from the United States Of America? His tone on Hard Coming Love and I Won't Leave My Wooden Wife For You, Sugar have always fascinated me.
I was able to get a Slipknot bass tone with just an Ibanez bass and a Peavey tube amp. Cant remember what i had the knobs set because this was like 15 years ago
Day 23 of asking for Paul McGuigan’s bass tone of Oasis NOTE: Don’t use Wonderwall as an example because the bassline was actually recorded by Noel Gallagher and not McGuigan. A couple great examples of his bass tone are from the songs Some Might Say and Morning Glory. Thanks!
Don't think a Rick was the right choice. Tone was thinner than it needed to be and didn't have enough sub-growl. A stingray or Warwick would've been a better choice if you were just avoiding using his signature Ibanez ATK.
