How To Get Started in Visual Effects (in 2021)

The question I get asked the most is "How to get started in Visual Effects?"
In 2019, we're in the information age - with so many resources, so much information that it's so easy to get overwhelmed that we stop, before we even begin.
There IS information out there on this topic, but most of it is quite literal "go to gnomon, or some vfx school" "DONE". Most of us don't have the luxury to spend $80,000+ (USD) to attend Gnomon or similar schools. And, who's to say that is actually the answer.
In the beginning, we just want to hit the ground running. I wanted to focus on this topic from the point of minimizing the time, minimizing the noise, and how to get clarity in your goals and what you truly should be focusing on.
What software is best, houdini, cinema 4d, 3ds max, maya, blender or after effects, photoshop or any others. Who you should listen to or what resources to study, or what specifically you want to do, whether it's visual effects in terms of compositor, technical director, creature animator or many other disciplines - let's get clarity on what this means TO YOU.
It's so simple to know where your attention should go - once you really hone in on what your goals are. And in this video I want to break through the noise and really get to the essence of what you want to do, and simply answer the question "how to get started in Visual Effects"
QUICK QUESTION - Please leave a comment: What websites or resources do you find valuable for learning or keeping up to date with the latest design and vfx news? Or other goldmines on the web that others might not know about

RE: Spanish Hi Jonathan, RU-vid should auto-transcribe to Spanish. Give it a few more minutes. However, would this be something you find valuable? I have been thinking for a while to maybe put out some VFX classes, as well as videos specifically in Spanish. What are your thoughts?
@jonydrummers
@jonydrummers 5 лет назад
@@AllanMcKay It could be awesome that you could do some kind of classes or tutorials in Spanish, many in Latin America would be grateful because there is not much material in Spanish language in VFX, from someone with experience like you! 1. Set specific "someday" narrow goals 2. mimic guys already in the game - studios, linkedin, ask questions 3. choose one or two tools that resonates you if you are a beginner, and try to understand concepts 4. on the way of learning, set tasks! 5. start from free materials 6. join some communities 7. post regularly

It's easy, just there's few simple steps: 1) Learn VFX programming to atleast advanced level. 2) Learn Physics and how in general everything works ( Data flow in 3D software etc ). 3) Have an good eye how certain VFX should look/behave like. And now MAYBE someone gonna hire you as a Runner or to do some background VFX that nobody will pay attention to or in best case scenario u will get to sculpt some rocks for a game. Then when your friend gonna play that game u will be like "See that rock ure using as a cover? I sculpted it!".
@AllanMcKay
@AllanMcKay 5 лет назад
Haha I feel you Thing is 20 years ago that's exactly what it was like Now if you're good at animation you can get hired for animation. Good at zbrush, hired as a sculpter. But it does help long term to know the foundations of all of this, and really helps to know the surrounding areas But yeah I love how the industry works sometimes

it's always a pleasure to watch your videos, it's like a boost that pushes me to keep going on despite all the difficulties. I really liked the part when you talked about software and how, if you understand the base concept of what you have/want to do, you can switch from one to another without much trouble. Of course, this principle can be applied at many other disciplines like music,photography or even in something less artistic like mechanic. As always, thanks for your advice!

For learning software faster one investment to consider is a 2nd monitor(or tablet or cast device) to reduce context switching. Not having to alt+tab between video tutorials and the software really adds up.

Thank you so much, I've been trying to learn Houdini because of Steven Knipping's destruction tutorials and I've been so overwhelmed with it and it's soooo advanced with code and stuff. It just makes me just want to give up. Then I remembered watching a 3DS Max FumeFX tutorial from Andrew Kramer and felt like hey I can actually do this. You gave me the confidence to use software that is comfortable for me.
@AllanMcKay
@AllanMcKay 4 года назад
I'm planning to release a lot of Houdini training soon with the focus being on ease of implementation. Because I do feel there is a lot of convoluted training out there I haven't been through Steve's stuff but out of all the training available, it might be advanced but I feel that's probably your best resource. The results I've seen from his training look great
@VincentG991
@VincentG991 4 года назад
Allan McKay Thats great news, over this past year i've come to really appreciate Steven's training (though really advanced)... I was really frustrated at first with how in depth things were to do some simple things. Any Houdini training you do I'd love to be part of, even if you did a redo of your building destruction training course or something similar in Houdini that would be fun to participate in.

I'm giving my first steps into Compositing,... trying to learn a little bit of roto, matte painting, camera projection... When you talk about our "Sunday goal", is it a good way to try and replicate a scene? For example, I love that Stranger Things season 3 part where Will comes out of the Arcade Games bar and the Shadow monster appears very far away, with all those clouds and red scenery. Should I put all my efforts in trying to recreate that? Thanks in advance!!

I've been in the industry for about 20 yrs now. I'm self taught and did not goto school for VFX. I find that in life it's all about who you know and not what you know. Anyone can be trained to do VFX, just like anything else. If you really want to get into the industry all you need to do Is move to Canada and get your foot in any VFX company , your chances will be better up there. The more you talk yourself up the better your chances of getting a job. It's all about how you talk, your attitude and who you know.. Check out a few RU-vid videos, learn the lingo and have confidence in yourself. You'll be a VFX sup sooner then you know. Good luck!

Hey Allan! Love your content. I am starting a film business at the moment. In therms of visual effects I started learning Blender a while ago (back then just for fun and because I was curious) and became somewhat familiar with it. I wanted to ask your opinion on the programm (I know its kind of a silly question) and how you see it useable for vfx. I so far only used it for short animations fun personal projects and architectural renderings, which in my humble opinions . But I found it rather difficult for vfx, as I couldn't find a proper or really useful way to exchange tracking data and other things with other software(Fusion, After Effects, Mocha). I now the software is only a tool, but I kinda fell in love with it (instead of Maya for example) and it is free/open source which really helps when looking at the subscription prices of other software. Thank you in advance. Greetings from Austria

Even with a goal and free Internet content your biggest problem with self-education will be structuring the path from A to Z. Because "you don't know what you don't know" figuring out strategies like fuzzy bisecting to fill in gaps is invaluable. On the way to "Z" what is "M"? "F"? "C"? "B"?

Is it easy to find a job (or distant outsource job) in California in VFX if I know 3ds Max well, some plugins for it and can do character animation in maya? If it is real, how to start looking for a job and where to send the showreel?

Haha just to clarify - I love the software, I've supervised many shows in it. But it's more when people need to preach about software for the sake of validation it drives me nuts. Of course nobody will acknowledge that's the reason, just simply because it's the best... But the second you need to voice your opinion about that software your use it's clearly for that reason. Religion, politics and telling people your software is the best and everything else sucks should all be topics not for the dinner table or online ;)

Any suggestions for someone who has been working in the industry but maybe not really going in the direction... but already 10years into the field... E.g. - I started out learning particles, character animations, creating short stories.. however ended up in ArchViz... and stayed in it for almost 8 years now. However, I want to get back into what I originally started out to be... but feel the learning curve is too far out there now.
