Changing careers into vfx after 30

One of the most common questions I get is "how do I get started"
But the other one is "Is it too late to change careers?"
Most of us feel like that ship has sailed, that we're now so invested in a career that we don't necessarily find fulfilling, but "it's what we know". And that Visual Effects is a young man (or woman's) game.
I've been really surprised when I talk with friends to realize they were a lawyer, business or architect or dozens of other 'titles' before they got into CG. That at 40 years old they decided they wanted to try something new. Some went back to school at Gnomon, my courses or others just worked at it late night tutorials, and hard work and leveraged what they knew.
I have coached lots of people in their careers and making the change, and it's definitely an area that is so achievable and shouldn't be deterred. But should also be done right. In reality, all the fears we have are legitimate fears. You have responsibilities, you have people depending on you, you are likely going to take a temporary pay cut, and who's to say that you're even ready? Or maybe the grass is greener on the other side, and that Visual Effects is a fun hobby, but as a career it's not quite the same.
It's smart to build a strategy, test the waters, and know that if you want it, it's absolutely possible, but just see it as a transition, not a switch. You don't just quit your job 'Half-Baked Style' and start over. But also know that you can leverage what you know. You have many life skills and experience that is worth it's weight in gold in any career. Leverage what you know, build a plan, build a timeline, and start planning your change into a visual effects career!

I am 47 now. I changed to vfx about 8-9 years ago. Started with doing whatever, retouching photos, some basic 3D, basic compositing, more like a hobby for about 4 years. Then I left my previous industry for good. Did not want to wake up being 60 and unhappy with my job. Now, I work full time for more than 4-5 years in second studio. And I am way more happy in what I am doing now then before. Mostly, I feel like a child in a candy store when I am in studio. And now I can do what I like and support my family. It was a very difficult transition when I started and lot of fear was involved. Overcoming that fear was a struggle. But, now I am here, a bit older than most of my colleagues, but I use my life experience to my advantage and for now, it works just fine. And the best thing, I learn something new and exciting every day. So in my case, seems starting so late with vfx was not such a bad idea.

That's so great man! I feel a lot of people feel trapped, where they're going to their job day in and day out not getting that fulfillment, so you end up using all your spare time to tap into that passion. But when you can actually can MAKE that your day job, your career it changes everything. You have that fulfillment day in and day out, and everything else in life is just a bonus. That's really great Davor! Honestly, congratulations!

Great video Allan. I just want to share my story with others, because I started my journey into the VFX industry in my 30-ies. After some work experience working whole bunch of different jobs, in one part in my life I wanted to do something that I like, but in one field. I was thinking like ... ok, but what do you want to do, what do you like? I like movies, photography, video games, graphics novels/comic books, books, music ... ok, I'm going to do something what is close to those fields. Then I saw article about 3D school, that opened in my city and the owner worked on some Hollywood movies. OK, let's try that. I worked two years, two jobs to earn money for the school, and I finished it. After that there was a period of trying to earn money with that knowledge, constatly emproving my skills and working side jobs to make for the living. Besides Maya, I started to work in After Effects. I did many shitty jobs, with low payment or no payement. Then I decide to quit my side job in the bar and try to find work in the studio. I got job in the studio, in the few first months I worked in the bar and in the studio, when I decide to bite the bullet and to start working only in the studio. I struggle with junior payment few months, but I knew that I'm on the right track. I started to work as a Nuke Digital Compositor on movies. In that period, guys from one vfx training centre, asked me if I could start working as a lecturer for After Effects, so I started to work that also. To make long story short, now I work as a freelance Digital Compositor, Motion Graphics Artist and 3D generalist and as a AE lecturer. I'm planing to do some projects in other countries and I'm fulfilling my childhood dream. The road was hard and bumpy but very creative and interesting. I'm 45 now, and I'm proud that I stayed on my path besides all difficulties. It's never too late if you now what is your dream and you are persistent enough to do it. So ... go for it guys ;-) p.s. I just noticed that one of the guys in the comments section is actually my dear friend and colleague ( Davor Kronja ) :-)

Glad I am not alone. I switched careers at 29 from medical doctor to 3D artist. The only time is too late to go after your passion is right before you die, go for it if you want it.

Im 23 on the verge of 24, and have been on the fence about switching from mechanical engineering to VFX/animation. I’ve always loved visual effects and animation, but was always told to “use” my intelligence, so I decided to go into mechanical engineering. I may be good at it, but I am unhappy working in mechanical engineering. Thank you for this video, I definitely need to start working hard now to switch as it has only been 2 years into it, and truly believe I can follow my passion and make it as a VFX artist.

Oh man. I needed to see this. I just turned 30 and I'm getting nervous because I haven't got my big break yet and I'm getting nervous as I'm getting older about not having that career yet. Funny you mention LA because I've been looking for work over there for a few months but as you said, companies are reluctant to hire someone who isn't there. I'm actually moving there in a few days and already have my profiles and resume with my LA location. I plan to go to all of the networking events and talks with my business card handy and on the lookout for advice/feedback. I'm fully expecting to struggle. I've lived in London and New York and I know how much it sucks to pay rent in these massive cities. I'm hoping to find work in 3D but I have the mindset that the main goal (this year at least) is to grow as an artist and meet people in the industry.

Thank you so much for this Allan, I am currently 39, been working as Music Teacher for 12 years now, and did some freelance Sound Engineering and Video Editing/ 2D VFX work. I really think that now is the time for me to change my career and chase my dream which is VFX. I feel that if I don't do it now, then probably it will be too late. Having that said, I wish to point out that your video gives great inspiration and insight to me and I believe to many others who simply struggle to balance their dream/want to do job with their daily family obligations, plus a previous career they have been in for almost half of their life. In brief it is never too late. Many thanks again, and keep up the great work you do!!

Thank you for your video! I will watch it again and again until I understand all 😅 (my English is not good enough).. Actually I am studying C4D and After Effects for one year, now I am 35. I am very confused, because in China this industry is just for young people, people after 35 begin to change to other areas.. because this industry requests a lot of overtime, older people can't do it anymore because of the physical and family limitations.. age discrimination is very strong in this industry... I'm learning it in a Chinese online school, with very good quality, but all my classmates are more or less 20 years old... Now I live in Europe, I really don't know if there is age limitations like in China... I work in a bank, a very stable work, but I don't like it at all... I really like the animation industry, really hope one day I can work in this area... But I don't know if I can find jobs with my age, or after 40 years old, when I will be good enough.. I created my Instagram account: cgart_serena, publishing some low quality work.. I am still learning and enjoying it with great passion, at least by now, as a hobby...

Awesome Allan! Very informative and great video! I've been a 3D-artist for 15-ish or so years, but never in VFX or feature work. Two years ago I joined Allan's FXTDT course, and his Live Action Series. I'm having a blast transitioning and specializing in FX, or more specifically as a Tech Artist, but in my mid-30s I definitively feel a lot of the things, thoughts and fears brought up here. My future is still open. My current job is secure and fairly fixed at 9 to 5. That leaves me both time and energy to do VFX and other hobbies in my spare time. I am occasionally able to bring in and use some of the FX stuff I learn into my job as well, to add some flair to our animations.. I might just leave it this way and focus on some side gigs for the experience. But there's always this voice at the back of my head pushing me towards diving into the VFX industry as well. The one thing I do know for sure though is that I'd rather be overprepared and have a plan set, than to risk it all and "move to L.A", haha.

Hey this is mojo_jojo_creations,im 19 and i have just started my vfx course, i don't know if you'll actually get the time to read this but damn man, your videos are helping me a lot. I've just finished the basic photoshop and adobe premiere, now starting 3ds max, since i live in india, it would be tough for me to get a job abroad in the future, but i think if you keep on uploading videos like these, I'll not only be able to figure out how to get a job abroad but be able to achieve my dream of becoming a vfx supervisor just like you, through your help.THANKS A LOT ❤️❤️❤️

@@ZitaSenora first of all and most important where Alan talks of getting rid of gimme mentality and building relationships with people in charge, after that quite anything, like building a reel, language spoken, grammar written, cover letter, whatever this guy says just consume it with your brain, fruits guaranteed at the end of the day...

Haha, this title got me! I'm 47 and just started transitioning into 3D animation / VFX. Its a struggle it mentally coming from design and motion graphics, not even working right now just going to school. So yeah why not challenge myself to a very competitive field of talented artist, what could go wrong?

Awesome man so great to hear! More content around this coming, but I wanted to just touch base on this because at least on my email list I find I have more people wanting to change careers into VFX than those coming out of school wanting to get started. So there's diffidently a bit need for it but I know most of us just assume "that ship has sailed" when really it's just more about careful planning and testing the waters, since it's not like in our early 20's where we can just dive in

I really appreciate the advice! I'm thinking about moving cities at some point so this is great information. Do you think it's appropriate to start sending companies your vfx demo reel without intent to immediately work for them? Just to start a relationship? Maybe small contact work.
