How To Get started painting Warhammer 40k Miniatures and paint your first miniatures
This is an easy to follow guide that uses Citadel products to achieve fantastic looking miniatures, even if you’re new to the hobby.

Ive just gotten my first war hammer set today. Its the two ones you are painting but a different set. When i finished painting the white one, I knew something was missing, so i watched a bunch of videos. And when i heard you say to water down the most watery thing i have witch was margos purple i decided to give it a go. And my lord it gave new life to it. So thank you very much.

I think it's really nice when eperienced painter gives such valuable lesson for newbies just beginning their adventure. You shown how we can (not perfectly, but quite elegant) paint miniatures from starter set without battery of different paints, but with just paints from starter pack. Thanks!

Oh hell yeah an updated video, started recently with this set and ive done the space marine thru the older tutorial so far! I was thinking about what to use as reference for the tyranid, now i can watch this! Also i didn't have blue tac so i used double sided tape, hope that helps someone else!

@@TableTopReadyRU-vid not sure if you're going to see this comment or not ive ordered the paint set and the introductory set however in the near future im going to order a space marine cpatain and he has skin what citadel pain is suitable for human skin colours and does the paint set box you showed consists of any skin colour or is there any paints i could mix from that set to achieve the colour of a skin

I would paint between the armour first so you can clean any mistakes. Then recess shade and drybrush. After this I would do the weapons and the steps in order 👌🏻

Got my blue base on after priming with chaos black primer. Nice thin coats, looks like I have kept it smooth. Next is the black detailing. Taking my time, keep coming back to this video for guidance.

Well one thing I do appreciate with the newer miniatures is that they can be built with limited use of glue. I started off with 4th edition high elves and then moved off the 40K 2nd Edition. The miniatures were far smaller and fully utilized glue to build. Man, when I look at some of my first space marines I wish I knew to thin my paints lol. Cause they are just a lump of blue and yellow paint now that I look back on them.

Nice guide. But even for beginners I recommend and undercoat so the base paints adhere better. Even a cheap can of grey plastic primer from a Halfords in the UK or even pound store black spray paint is fine. Shouldn't blow cost out.

What great timing on this video. My first miniatures and tools are supposed to arrive today and last weekend i watched your tutorial on Necrons and Space Marines from 2 years ago. I was just looking for it again and saw this one. I have wanted to get into 40k tabletop for quite awhile and am most interested in the war game but excited to get to painting also and my wife is an artist so naturally I am diving in head first with the Leviathan box set.

@@TableTopReadyRU-vid i noticed you used watered down abaddon black instead of Abraxas Earthshade which you used in your previous video. Why the change?

I actually tried both ways because I do like the clean look of not having everything shaded. The black was a lot more punishing and specific to the armor so I used the abraxas earthshade for shading the recessed lines. It was more forgiving on the metalic bits, leathers and in hard to reach areas. Now im cleaning it up with the blue and its looking really nice. Tomorrow I will try for some highlighting. For my first ever mini's I'm doing a batch of 10 flame torch Ultramarines. I figure even if i mess up a bit at least they are all uniform haha

I use to use shades for recess shading but now I like to use the paints. This is becuase the paints provide more of consist strong colour. it's a choice though :) if you prefer the shades then thats whats right for you :D keep working hard and tryng things out is how we learn and get better quicker.

I just started this hobby like a week ago. Now I have 32 paints [a lot of shades and technical] and my biggest hurdle is accidental touches :( I got myself magnifying glass to help me aim but still I from time to time mess up, which means I have to do yet another QC pass with same colors. After like 15 hours I am still in pre-nuln oil phase of painting about 17 miniatures [adepta sororitas] (as denoted in duncan tutorial). I still have to do QC abaddon black pass after all other passes. It's undending. But so much fun to see the result and the zen feeling doing it!

As long as your enjoying it. That’s important. When you start, it’s going go take a lot of getting use to and learning brush control. The more you do the better we get. Mounting your miniature onto something you can hold like I show in the video will help a lot 😃 but keep practising and you’ll get there. I believe in you 💪🏻 good luck

So if your a new painter you might as well make a wet pallet it can easily be made with a Tupperware I've even used old plastic lunch meat containers cleaned first of course. Then fold like 5 paper towels so they fit in the container then put a peice of parchment paper on top of your paper towels tats also cut to fit. Your paper towel will keep moisture and the parchment with seperate your paint and keep it wet and usable much longer you can always put the lid on and come back tomorrow

I see you've linked firestorm games and the categories which is great, but a list of the items you used would help so I don't have to go back through the video to find out. See once you have done the base undercoats, do you still need to add water to your paints for example when you're going over your miniature once coated to paint on the black?

yes, you'll need to thin your paints generally. it just makes them better to work with

I would do the drybrushing after shading. don't give up on highlighting though, give it time :D you'll get there

Can I ask a question on the space marine holding the pyro blaster. Can you still use the pyro blaster in game even if its canister is not connected to it? (I'm new)

the starter brush only comes in the tool set. its not a great brush anyway. I would go with a medium layer brush if i had to choose

Personally I prefer the back of a hobby knife blade but realistically it's the same concept so either way works.

I do a lot of these smaller details throughout the main tutorials. In different ways so you could choose whats best for you. I'll also continue to cover these in the main videos so you'll always see the most up to date way I like to do them :)

How do you keep your colours active/wet on your palett? I feel like once once I mixed a colour and used it once, it already dried out by the time i need to reload my brush with it

I've not got any experiance with doing a brush undercoat but I'm sure it would be absolutley fine. just treat it like you would your general paints and thin them and use multiple layers

You can paint any chapter that has the colour of any of the paints. You can even make your own 👌🏻

thats really upto you, seeing as you have the tools and paint set you could expand to one of the starter sets. I really just wanted to show how a miniature is painted and explain all the ideas and why things are done the way they are. the information can then be continued on to other projects regardless :D

It’s upto you. Varnish isn’t really needed. If you use an undercoat the paint is pretty durable and your not gonna do be doing anything so robust. Varnish can also alter how your miniatures look

Painting my very first miniature set now, 10th edition introductory set. This video has given me a lot of confidence that my minis won't look good awful. Thank you for the help. Edit- Is it okay to use normal acrylic paints like for canvas on minis? It may seem like a dumb question but like I said I'm a noob.

awsome, I hope your enjoying the hobby. Personally I would avoid acrylic paints that are specific for miniature painting. They have different consistencies and the pigment strength can be poor, especially for cheaper stuff. There are cheaper alternatives than citedal, for example I'm a bug fan of Vallejo paints and you can use a 'conversion chart' to find the same colours. we spend a lot of money on the miniatures so its worth investing in paint for them. as well when starting out just worry about your base colours and slowly get more paints later when you can

Been taking very slow treating each model as its own art project. Bought some scarlet, gunmetal and silver. Getting a lot of use from mixing the scarlet.

The white synthetic brushes are just fine for starting out. In fact they often recommend synthetic brushes for beginners until you learn how to use the brush properly and brush control. You don't have to buy GW brushes tho. Even a cheap starter set from an art store or other hobby store is just fine. Then, as you get better, you can upgrade to real sable brushes. And don't buy GW brushes. They're ok but you're paying a premium price for a basic product. They are know to have poor brushes. Look at Raphael or Devinci or Windsor and Newton.

Not at all. The only issue I find with them is that they hook at the tip. But try out different brushes and find which you like best. Everybody is different 😃

For this set yes. Usually for most other kits. You will eat transfers.

Kind of random but when painting your own space marines do you still segment paint things like pouches and ornaments on the belts? I've just finished up a 10 man kill team in phobos armor and i find it pretty difficult scrubbing off paint, applying glue and then frustratingly placing the pouch/knife/hostler. I've never painted a fully constructed model but i would much rather not have to glue tiny parts to the models after they are finished. I'm wondering if its worth the frustration of gluing the tiny parts or if i'm better off just painting them after sticking them on the marine or any other model?

Please add information next time on how to prepare a miniature before painting. It must be washed so that the paint does not come off. I noticed that no one says a word about it.

Hey there. Long time painter here, this isn't true! Whilst it is on resin models from places like forge world, you are absolutely fine to spray your plastic kits from games workshop straight after building. If you are having trouble with getting your primer to stick, make sure you check out some videos on spraying with a rattlecan, it's not as simple as "spray". Things like temperature, mixing etc. All have an effect. Also, be sure to let your spray can primer "cure", which is not the same as "dry". Let the primer sit on the model overnight, then apply your paint. Know that ultra mat paints like vellejo model colour will very easily rub off no matter what you do due to the resins and binders being far weaker than those found in satin paints like citadel or the new army painter range. You can also seal your miniatures with a few thin coats of Matt varnish when you are done painting to protect the paint should you use a more delicate brand. Hope this helps! :)

@@ukcubing3150 I had this problem a week ago. The paint was just falling off before my eyes. In general, nothing helped until they advised me to wash the miniature and clean it with a toothbrush.

I did this in the previous version off this video and chose not to include it. The reason is that it made no difference. I tested this. I would recommend undercoating them first if your having issues with paint rubbing off. But of course for best practice you can wash them 😊 I just felt it was an unnecessary step for the video
