Did you know... the word "tattoo" comes from the Tahitian word "tatau."
Think you got island life under your skin?... Over the last few days I've been exploring the island of French Polynesia, this time I'll add the "Magic Island" of Mo'orea to the list. But... I'm upping the ante with an appointment for a traditional tattoo. Let's dig into island life, learn a little more about Tahitian culture, and take home a permanent mark from this adventure... definitely one of my most #travelaggressive moments.

"Just got a tattoo from a dude with a drum stick and a twig" That guy is an amazing artist who has tattooed all over the world. James Samuela. He studied at L’Ecole Nationale des Beaux Arts(National School of Fine Arts) in Paris and has been tattooing traditionally since then keeping the traditions of his culture alive for us to enjoy. I am planning a trip specifically to get a piece by him.

I am so jealous. I was on Mo'orea 20 years ago and no one was doing the traditional tap tap. I got some tattoo work done on Huahine but it was still machine work. I really wanted tap tap good on you for finding your local artist. He isn't kidding either. It isn't about putting art on your skin. It is about telling a story. Tatau is the written language of the people.

Thank you for your story! I realize that it isn’t easy to find a traditional tattooist around Tahiti, at all, and I really appreciated my experience on Mo’orea.
