Hey that’s me deadlifting 💪🏽😀 I love it! Strongman classic competition at the fair! I remember that! Probably one of the most fun competitions I’ve done! 🙌🏽
Pre watch guess list for the strongman exercises / events that Alexander Bromley puts in S for becoming more jacked and more generally strong and useful: 1. Any type of off the ground loading event. Sandbags, stones, whatever. 2. Overhead lifts, probably anything off the ground 3. Any type of squat. He will make his obligatory reference to Mark Rippetoe saying “they make you harder to kill.” 4. Farmers walks / handle carry’s You can rip me apart in the replies for everything I get wrong. I watch this man’s videos way too often lol.
Keep it up big man. It has been a very nice time seeing your content evolve over the years. I remember the white board days. The membership days and it’s been great to watch through it all. As always loved the vid
Man, your content is so good, Bromley. Now you've got my 64 year old self wanting to get a log bar and farmers walk handles. You deserve all the success your channel has gotten over the years!
I got stones, waiting for sandbags to restock and just recently ordered farmers handles, always loved dynamic movements like sandbags and farmers just seem fun, used to do these with kettlebells.
i think the continued use of the axel is to help differentiate between olympic weightlifting. if the clean and jerk/press record was shattered by a strongman it would have many "purists" up in arms about PED use in strongman
My brother actually found he had good carryover from the yoke to the squat. He added about 60 pounds to his squat in the half a year since he started yoke carries. Granted, he's not at the level of someone like Bromley. But he is a strong dude (590 max squat and worked up to short bursts on the yoke with 900 pounds around the same time).
I think Alan Thrall agrees with you on the problems with the axle clean and press. It seems like he was more arguing for the benefits of cleans in general and push presses in general.
Farmer walk is the best exercise to do. I live in a rural town, no big gyms near, I got few weights, I just chopped some logs and build me some stuff to do farmer walks
@@NboOfficialAusStrongman has always been about athleticism and technique. Powerlifting isn't a huge thing in Strongman, events and spectacle is. You could argue most Strongman circus acts were faked to shock the crowd. Strongman started from entertainment.
Awesome content, thanks! Finally someone has a more nuanced take on axle DLs than "it's for grip". OK, tricky question incoming: deficit SLDLs are often recommended for stones as an accessory. By the same logic you apply to axle DLs (i.e. the bar doesnt roll, move, bend, etc.) would you recommend axle deficit SLDLs over regular ones for stones as an accessory?
So would you agree that Arthur lifts make more sense than axle clean and presses since the behind the back continental is so much safer and more efficient?
cool to see you have Arild Haugen in the thumbnail. He was an insane talent at a wery young age. He broke the atlas stone WR at around 20 years old, i believe it still stands today. 400kg deadlift! A shame he didnt continue the strongman careere after hes first WSM. He was super jacked to :D so he fits this context. u should watch "Arild Hulk Haugen workout" on youtube. Cheers from Norway
Hello Alex, im 32 years old, 190 pounds at the moment on serious cutting phase, i used to play rugby for more than 10 years and last year i tried powerlifing training for 5 months, not competing. Lately i m thinking of starting strongman training and maybe competing. Do you have any advice or any tip ?
Bromley, do any of your programs prioritize both the overhead press and bench? I compete locally in strong man so overhead is my main concern but I'm sick and tired of not having a 315 bench
Close Grip Bench Press is one of the best assistance exercises for a strong overhead press if you lack pressing power but i would advice NOT TO use legs at all on a bench press in that case. Do feet up bench close grip in that case so it will actually only be your upperbody working
@@RobinJohnsson1000 I added in close grip at the start of the summer and my bench finally started going up. Slow progress but I've put 10-15 on it and 15lb on my push press
As an average lifter,Clean and Press,if you can do that with at least 2 plates its impossible for you to not have a decent looking physique and the strength that comes with it
225 is peanuts. I’ve seen tiny guys clean and jerk that for reps. If you can hang clean 225 for multiple reps with minimal lower body engagement you likely have a solid yoke.
sir, I cannot find the answer to this question on the Internet, so I think this is the right place. When to use a belt when lifting stones/sandbags? I don't own a belt - should I buy it if I want to explore sandbags and stone lifting and have a tweaky back? I see you do it both with belt and beltless.
Dropping a comment bc I’m a whore for circus press as it is indeed a parlor trick lol I actually think there’s some utility as a general developmental tool but certainly doesn’t take the place of other overhead movements. Fun way to program them for conditioning is taking a lighter load and alternating hands for 6-10 reps each side. I’ve used this with clients before and it def catches up to you after 4-5 reps lol
Wouldn't yoke have a good benefit carryover to other things like the keg/Sandbag/shield carry? The yoke is heavier on your back and doesn't require you gripping it in the front like the others, but doesnt it train you for the other events by putting a much heavier load on your body than the front carries?
Alex why you gotta do my Axle Continental dirty like that :( ... I prefer it to log because I'd rather have an axle on my clavicle than a log crushing my will to live out of my chest😅 ... We are 100% agreed on S-Tier though.
Me too, I grabbed an 8ft scaff pole and cut it down to size. I love it, I do everything with it. It feels great, once your grip gets accustomed to it. Trying to build my traditional power clean, with the axle, at the minute, loads of fun😂
bros!! i need your help! please answer this question yes or no, do you consider yourself to be strong? its for a statistics assignment which is due tomorrow.
A lot of unwarranted hate for the axle. For general purposes, axle anything will make you a better athlete and person. Maybe not specifically continental clean, but double overhand powers or even DOH continentals with an axle will make you a strong mofo - add to that the extra mobility it requires in front rack and the lack of whip in the bar have it in at least B, if not A tier
Double overhand axle power cleans is a grip exercise, period... you can't build rate of force development in the hips when you have to slow the pull to keep it from popping out of your hands. Really, really bad way to build athletic anything
@@AlexanderBromley I be go to disagree. In a general athletic sense I think there is great application for grappling, football and getting overall jacked. Also the element of working to a bar that doesn’t rotate. Anyways, it’s your tier list not mine.
farmers walks for upper back growth, blasting TUT no ROM at all? I don't see this exercise even close to rowing and pulldowns, beside stabilisation the vertical force mostly hits your traps and calfs
As someone who doesn’t compete in strongman and only watches the big contests usually just the Arnold and bits of WSM idk why they keep the axle clean and press around. It feels like a red headed step child. We all wanna see people do heavy ass log clean and presses. The axle cleans look like shit out of a saw movie. I agree with the idea of just giving people a barbell and idk maybe not letting people do split jerks. That would probably be better for the athletes and spectators. Feel free to disagree
Not to put too fine a point on it but in reality none of these exercises are particularly optimal for building muscle as they lack any kind of eccentric loading. We know that the deep stretch under load is the most hypertrophic part of the movement. Obviously you dont want a controlled eccentric when trying to maximize strength/reps. Additionally just because something is sore or you feel it working doesnt mean it's getting a good growth stimulus. Go run a marathon and your legs will be fucked for days after. Not good for growth though. After boxing my shoulders are on fire and sore the next day but it hasn't triggered growth.
A lot builds are achievable for those with insane genes but if you think you’ll look anything like some of these guys without gear you’re out of your mind🤷🏽♂️
Nah I the axel clean and press is 100% A tier, its literally a full body movement which is the majority of strongman events and having an axel in my opinon makes it even easier on the clean bc of the 2inch diameter and if you dont want to tear off a bicep just improve your grip and double overhand that bich.
You need more than "a full body movement". Burpees are a full body movement. Getting good at continental cleans doesnt do a thing for your other strongman events. The strongest grip in my division isn't double overhanding competitive ohp weights. If you can doh, it means your press sucks.
I actually think that Stones are closer to F than S unless there's an 80% chance that you're going to compete in a show with stones. 1 Tacky on your hands makes it a smelly pain in the 🍑. 2 The shirts, elbow/forearm sleeves and maybe gloves make it a different art form, like geared powerlifting. 3 Risk of injury to you, bystanders and the gym floor. 4 You're not going to find stones at a 24 Hour Fitness in Toledo, Ohio. You're probably not even going to find stones at a Golds Gym in Venice, California.
-Don't need to use tacky -Gear just reduces friction allowing more weight, still grows the absolute shit out of your hips and back, nothing like equipped lifting - risk?? Lol the assumption is you have a place to do it and aren't retarded - anyone who wants can buy stone molds cheap, make their own and air load them in the dirt outside... did that for years. - it's a list of strongman events, not equipment you find at golds gym... you won't find any of these in Golds gym
1 You need to use tacky, if you want to get good at moving the heaviest possible stones... Just like you need time with an actual Circus DB to get good at moving the heaviest possible Circus DB. Large Sandbags are getting more popular at normal gyms. You can get the same benefits from Sandbags without the risk. 2 If being mentally handicapped correlates with injuries... Then you are way more mentally handicapped than 90% of the population. 3 Listen to your intro again 00.09 You said acquisition of size and strength, no assumptions. 4 Oh yeah, gear reduces friction so you can move heavier stones. Gear in powerlifting helps you move heavier barbells 😅
This list was elegant in it's ability to be irrelevant to the point while also being completely wrong, anyways. JFC I would pay to see your standardized test scores.
@AlexanderBromley 00:26 Aren't going to mess you up. Aren't going to waste your time. 1 You put tire flips in the D/F tier because you injured yourself doing them. Stones are way more dangerous than Sandbags. 2 Sandbags are pretty common now. So, unless there's a 100% chance that you are competing in a show with stones, building stones for your back yard is a waste. So, based onYOUR criteria at 00:26 stones should not be S tier. 3 Standardized Test Scores? Now that's irrelevant 😂😂😂😂😂
