I was one of your first subscribers and, while not always keeping up with your new videos, I binge watch when I can. Today I've gone through about 8, and this one was so, so helpful. I've sorted my back button focus and, my goodness, what a difference.Thanks for always being hugely informative and never ever boring. And thank you for being so clear and covering all abilities so well.

Thank you for this video. While I already knew every one of the individual points, and use them on a regular basis, it was still good to have them all together, because if I miss one, then the shot is ruined. Super clear, high efficiency knowledge transfer. My wife and I try for this every day with our own YT channels, because that's how you keep viewers engaged. Thanks again!

You did this video brilliantly, you paced yourself and got in all of the topics and slowed it down so that your guest could follow you. All of my cameras are set up for back button auto focus, which I use for portrait photography and setting up your lens to manual mode is used in landscape photography to nail your point so that the autofocus doesn't re adjust. You are easy to understand, you keep your topic less, technical, but informative and more importantly, you stay on point, good job and keep it up.

For handheld shooting (less useful on tripod) you can half-press the shutter button to get the focus, then keep it half-pressed while you recompose along the plane, then fully press to take the shot.

Great video, I must agree the back button focus is the best way to go. I have been trying to form a new habit, when my camera is on a tripod to turn off VR button. I find that focusing on a person or animal ‘s eye close to you, aids in getting a better focus point and in turn a sharp photo. Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge !
@andrewelder2739
@andrewelder2739 4 года назад
A tip you used but didn't spell out was using the shutter delay. Even on a tripod, hitting the button and having the shutter trigger simultaneously can introduce a tiny bit of shake. With still subjects like this, the 2-second delay can make a big difference!

Joanie, this is a great video on understanding focus, one of the best I've seen on the subject. Thank you! You have a great on camera personality. I hope you continue shooting videos and have much success! One thing I learned the hard way is that depth of field for focus gets shallower as the camera gets closer to the subject. I shot some food photos where part of the food item was out of focus (not on purpose) because the depth of field was so shallow. Live and learn!

Hi Joanie! I must say that you have not only great information here, but awesome presentation skills as well! I do landscape and small product photography, and have dabbled in food photography as well. For most of my product shots, I find that a macro lens (i.e., the Fujinon XF80mm f/2.8 Macro) gives me the sharpest, most detail-rich images possible with my particular gear. Also, I realize it’s out of the scope of this video, but for images where large depth of field is required, focus-stacking is a fantastic technique. Of course, a solid tripod is a necessity! Thanks again! .

Just watched this again as I’m taking some pictures today and needed some help. RU-vid is full of photography videos but there is a big difference.. I can spend hours watching others videos and all I get is more confusion! How you do it is great, keep the video subject very specific, make it bite size and especially like when you tell ‘me’ to take my camera out and try it together with you. Would be nice to get more videos on camera settings like you covered aperture etc but looking at my canon EOS 200D there is soooo many more things that gets me feeling dizzy 😵
