I didn't have any tattoos but I got an apprenticeship. Now I have a couple but I'd like to save the space for some artists as good as you.

what really upsets me is how many artists say their portfolio was crap when they got their apprenticeship but nowadays you have to be soo good because quality has gone up. Artists have told me my portfolio is better then what their was and its so frustrating! You just have to keep trying and improve your quality of work

You always learn even if your good at art from the beginning. I constantly keep putting my own art down cause it never looks the way I exactly want it. I'm learning to let go of small mistakes but it's just so hard.

dnguyen253 I can relate so much! They say you are your own worst critic. There's also that crazy self doubt that you aren't getting it right. It can make it hard to always be drawing, well at least for me.

I've been an apprentice for four years now and it has been tough. I've only just started to tattoo and building my own clientele and to be honest I couldn't be happier. I've wanted to tattoo since I was 13 years old and now 10 years later I've finally achieved my goal! I totally agree with everything that Anrijs says in this video. It's tough but anyone can get there if you just put your mind to it :) x

They most likely used her to clean & not get paid. It can take that long but it all depends on how much effort you put on it too. So four years is way too long to tattoo. You should’ve already tattooed after 1 maybe 11/2 years at least

i have been an apprentice tattooer for about 4 months now and i also do some reception which includes cleaning/checking inventory/ making appointments/take phone calls etc... although i also tattoo! i wouldn't be able to live on the just the tattoo revenue which is less than 10 to 20 $ per tattoo and i do about two to three per day but mixed with the 40 hour pay from reception i can do what i love and my side job is already at my place of work! Go for your dreams no matter what it is, if you have passion for the art you will see progression if you step out of your comfort zone once and a while :)

@zacharyhorvath3615

such a good video, I watched this about a year ago, a few months before getting the apprenticeship I'm currently in. My main hangup was that I didn't have many tattoos, and that I was really nervous to have my drawings evaluated. The way I approached shops was to just ask them if they weren't busy if they had the time to look through my drawings and sketchbooks to get some direction, and I was always treated with respect. I think the only reason that I got in was due to the fact that my sketchbook was mostly drawings from life. I have always felt that if I can learn to capture the likeness of the world around me, that I would get better at drawing from my imagination. Being an apprentice is difficult, but I'm learning a lot, and I see a huge improvement in the quality of my work. Thanks for this video

The problem is that young people just want to go straight and tattoo. The draw part is the backbone of tattoo, i still draw when I have time, and also study from books and you tube is also very useful. Practice and discipline is the big detour to the people think that tattoo is easy cake
@alyssamichaela
@alyssamichaela 7 лет назад
Daniel VatoTattoo exactly! I've been wanting to be a tattoo artist for years and I've been drawing since I was a kid. Im seventeen right now and still have a couple of years before I leave home but I'm not quite to the point where I'd feel confident approaching a tattoo artist with a portfolio so I am constantly practicing all kinds of things and pushing the boundaries of what I am skilled in drawing.
@sterlingjoseph5068
@sterlingjoseph5068 7 лет назад
Daniel VatoTattoo ummm actually tattooing is quite easy to pick up the (BASICS) if your already a good artist. It also helps if you have a light hand. It only took me about 2 days if that to get my line work damn near perfect . Now I can pull a straight line damn near 98% of the time after only two days of practicing it . Shading was easier for me to pick up . I ride the tube on everything except line work and the same way and confidence I have on paper I just carry it over to skin . I get lost in the moment most times and forget that I'm even working on skin and still think I'm coloring and drawing on paper . That's when my tattoos come out the best!!!🎨🎨🎨🎨😃😃😃😃😃
@James-ix5yj

@SterlingJoseph: I'm 17, and I've been drawing on my arms with various greyscale tones of india ink brush pens, sometimes taking hours on a single arm sheath. In public, I've been treated as though I have tattoos (when I washed one off in a public restroom, a lady nearby was shocked when she saw the 'tattoo' flow down the drain) and family members and friends both online and locally have told me that I should be a tattoo artist. However, I'm still not old enough (in PA) and I'm not sure how well drawing with brush pens is like tattooing- I assume they're completely different, but would my experience with shading, inking and highlighting my arms and legs with pen make tattooing easier for me? Note: I am not doing it for money, I'm doing it because I enjoy doing so. I've even given curious friends in the past some arm drawings of their own.

very helpful and nice to see a more positive outlook from a tattooist instead of the a lot more negative attitudes i see out there that i feel tend to put people off this is motivational and super informative ^^ right now im trying to improve my skills in art while doing an adult course to help with my confidence in drawing and maybe even open new artistic pathways to me along the way like you said being and artist and having the skills can take you in many different directions good luck to all fellow artists out there and those who are also looking for tattoo apprenticeships

Great video as always... Amen on what you said. Another thing to consider what I have heard from many tattoo and body art artists on how to get in to tattooing, piercing or whatever is to be a good customer, to be friend of a shop and once they now that you are reliable, dedicated and have required attitude and hopefully skill set, you definitely have chance.

Thank you so much for this video! I had an apprenticeship a while back as the tattooist who took me on actually messaged me after seeing my work on Facebook and offered me the place, but I had to quit as the shop was just so far away that after a while I couldn't afford to pay £10 on train fare everyday and she wouldn't allow me to get a part time job to support my apprenticeship which sucked. Currently trying to get myself back into one somewhere closer so this has helped! Looking forward to portfolio video! Lowri

I personally think it will never be good enough.. there will be always place for improvement , even after 30 years of learning / drawing / tattooing / painting etc... there will be still so much to learn.. but to get apprenticeship I guess it will depend on studio and there requirements.

@AnrijsStraumeTattoo

yeah. it was back then too , that most of the ''better'' online artists would be booking only. I do think most of those artists will not have time to individually take on apprentices, if they will be looking for someone they will post about it online.. (but I could be wrong) In this video I'm speaking about more realistic ways to get apprenticeships. There's hundreds of high street studios, with very low social media following, or without any social media, still with lot of good artists and in my opinion that would be more realistic to get apprenticeship there. as they will have receptionist / helper place / and ussualy there will be many artists, so Studio apprentice is something lots of street shops will want. Possibly they already have someone and not looking at the moment. but possibly their apprentice is already ready to start tattoo in few weeks and they are looking for new one to start. Good Luck with it! Let me know when you get one and how you got it ! will be great to hear !

I did 15 drawings this week. I'm hoping I'll get used to it. Before all this I usually only finished 3 or 4 detailed drawings a week. But the tattoo parlor wants bigger drawings with less detail.. at least they said my linework is good..

I don't have the time for an apprenticeship. I got bills to pay and mouths to feed. so I just started tattooing, haven't started making money yet, but my tattoos are coming out pretty good. I was born an artist and have always been pretty good at drawing since I was a little boy. tattooing is definitely not easy though, I hope I can become a great tattoo artist one day. however its discouraging when I hear artists in the industry saying youll have to work for free in an apprenticeship in order to get in the tattoo industry. I have no time to work for free whatsoever. so the only other option for me is to become a great tattoo artist out of my kitchen.
