Just got my handpan, and I've been frustrated not getting clean tones. Your video is so clear to understand. I've been watching video after video and yours was the first that gave me that "a-ha" moment of understanding. I have been playing taiko drums for 10 years and I employ a lot of what you say in my drumming technique: relaxing my body; having the control come from my wrist. When I was helping to teach students, most important to me was getting them to understand centering the core of their body as a way of "feeling" and connecting with the drum as they play, which is not easy for a lot of people to understand. This is the first video I have found of you, so I am excited to learn more. Thanks again for sharing, this has been so helpful!

Wow, this is so wonderful to hear. I live for those a-ha moments! What a blessing. Thank you for sharing 🙏🏽 I’m so glad you found the video and connected with it. I love what you are saying about the core. It’s true that ultimately that’s where it comes from, even down to the soles of the feet also. I mentioned it in my first edit but took it out because I was concerned I might loose some folks and take away from the main points, I will definitely speak more about it in my full course. Thanks for the reflections and reminder :)

I also played taiko in the past, and also got my first handpan. What me helps also is meditating before playing, and sort of keep the meditation state while playing, just the right balance between relaxation and concentration. And every movement comes from the feet, that is so true. I also practice tai chi for about 20 years and the techniques and balancing methods are also quite helpful

I use to get that way for a while myself. Then I discovered David swarup(great player). I focused on his hands and really studied what he did I basically just copied how he did things and I eventually got my rhythm. I then played at the beach during the summer under a tree just practicing. Next thing I know I had a few people standing and watching. 😏👍 It's so fun when you get lost in a trance from your own groove and your hands just go by themselves 😌

Thanks so much! A few decades ago I learned Egyptian drumming from a master teacher, and so much of what you have to say here is the same.. relaxed, centred, precise, fluid wrist, go slow, balance the hands, play as quietly as you can, always check and correct for tone, balance and ease... love it!

Very cool. Didn't know about the dimple border vs tone field tonal quality difference. I like the part where you are feeling into one hand so that you can transfer technique to the other. It's something that I never thought to do until I started playing drum kit. It's so interesting how we just can't transfer muscle memory / conditioning from one hand to another and how we have to train each side separately!

I love to watch your tutorials (thank you so much for sharing!!!) and this one brings me right back to basics...........although I have been playing handpan for about a year now, I had to find out, that the strength and flexibility of my fingers is not developed as it should. So I started doing all kinds of exercises that will strengthen every single one of my fingers and the forearm-muscles, but also make it possible for me to play as relaxed as possible. I guess, even advanced players will always need to work on precision and flexibility of their hands/fingers....especially for double-strokes and rolls or other fingertricks! Could you extend this tutorial and make another one on the mentioned topic? I would love to see a lesson on exercises that will help to achieve this. And, so practising does not become tooo boring: how can I combine this and incorporate it into little phrases (sorry, I lack creativity) !!??

+subo Bo awesome questions and comment. I neglected directly focused of finger and arm work for most of the last 9 years. It was only in the last 4 years I started focusing more on it. I think the best way to practice things is in context. I built up a lot of hand strength during my 4 years of street performance. Playing a lot and focusing on great sound often is enough. Also, yard work and puzzles help lol Split hand/finger techniques is probably the best way to build arm and finger strength, imo. what really opened up the power in my hands. I’m working on a full course on this that hopefully will release this year, after the beginner course. Lately I have been focusing more on strengthening and stretching. At some point I will make a video. I have had to because now if I don’t my hands start to hurt to the point of making it harder to play. The most important thing in your comment to talk about though, imo, is the end. I would highly recommend you never speak against your desires. Our bodies, hearts, and mind will respond to what we hold in front as a mirror. I am sure you are creative in many many ways. It’s a matter of patients and practice. Becoming creative can be a developed skill. So for me a more useful statement would be something like, I really want to focus on playing kore creativity. Thank you for this wonderful comment.

I love your videos! I bought a handpan, and I noticed that the tone C doesn't sound the same to me when I hit different parts of the circle of the note C, which is not the case with the other tones and they all sound the same, regardless of where I hit in the circle. The C tone sounds quite muffled when I hit it in the upper part, while anywhere else in the C range it sounds normal. It is noticeable a lot, and I wonder if this is a reason to return the handpan and ask for a replacement? Thank you!

Thanks so much for the kind words! There is an incredible range of quality amongst builders, so much so that some handpans are hard to even call handpans. And even with a great builder, the amount of weird things that can go wrong are astonishing. If you are not happy and can get a refund I would do so asap. If you are looking for guidance for a handpan, I offer free scale consultations at www.Handpan360.com where I also sell instruments from great makers I know personally. Mine is i think beyond redemption as it was in a very bad fire. He case stuck to it, i scrapes it off and sent it away but the repair man couldnt do it andd cracked a sound pit, now it womt eing without effort, is it me or is it it. Its bronze

I never heard of a bronze handpan, is it bronze or colored gold? Who is the original builder? who did the repairs? A cracked dimple isnt necessarily the end, it can be welded...feel free to email me at handpan360 at gmail dot com you can send. me video/pictures and I will give my opinion and suggestions as best I can
