▶Arpeggios are a great way to play chords and provide harmony on the handpan.
The lesson starts with simple ways to play 3 and 4 note arpeggios and then covers how to create more groovy and involved patterns and how all of this can work when playing together with other musicians.
By the end of the lesson, I give you an overview of the different chord options on a handpan with Kurd 9 scale.
Level: Beginner to Intermediate

The handpan I play in the video is made by Victor Levinson.

Welcome to week #2 with another handpan lesson. Today is all about arpeggios. Starting off with simple ways to play a harmonic progression and later in the lesson covering some more involved and groovy patterns. There is also a duet towards the end and the corresponding play along tracks in the video description, so you can join in!

Seriously, the tone!!! Want to work out a language system and talk through one so badly I can practically feel my hardened fingers tapping out this trapped music... Almost painful how deeply I feel this NEED to glorify Yah with a handpan/hang drum... Been a frustrated percussionist for decades, but once I heard the TONE and am literally watching what I do subconsciously on any surface I can touch it became virtually UNBEARABLE. At least I can listen on RU-vid. Thank you for your uploads!

@DavidKuckhermann
@DavidKuckhermann 4 года назад
thanks Slava, your early feedback for the episode was very helpful! What exactly do you mean - that the play along part was new and you'd like to know more about this? You mean playing with several handpan players in different "roles"? Or are you referring to the arpeggio subject?
@slaffsla
@slaffsla 4 года назад
I am referring to the melody part, player on the left. It’s not exactly composing, I guess, but being able to add notes sparingly and in place along with another player. Quite a new concept to me, which was only somewhat touched in your courses in rhythmic displacement.

"The most obvious ways to play a 3 note arpeggio" Maybe a stinger towards Hang Massive? I'd dig it tbh :D Keep up the good work, man!
@DavidKuckhermann
@DavidKuckhermann 4 года назад
Not at all. Obvious or simple doesn't equal bad (at least in my book). Often those are the most catchy things and these patterns have been used in 1000s of beautiful music pieces in classical, pop and other genres. I love Hang Massive, they are good friends of mine and I'd say they are the masters of catchiness in the handpan world, which is an art in itself! :)
@LimTind
@LimTind 4 года назад
@@DavidKuckhermann hm okay :/ I prefer yours and Nadishanas work by far with all that virtuosity and clever arrangements. And I think it is a really bad thing that their "work" greatly exceeds yours when it comes to public perception. In my opinion, pieces like Khubananukh are indeed really catchy, too. Yet, Triads and mindlessly reapated eighth note patterns seem to please the majority of the internet way more :/ What a time to be alive ._.

Great lessons, thanks. I've been practicing similar 4 note arpeggios on a D minor handpan, but with alternating hands which feels more natural and easier to play faster. But I can see the benefit in learning this way so I will adjust to this method also. What I am really curious about is your opinion on swapping the leading hand on the first beat. What I'm teaching myself is to play chords like Am7 (135753 135753) hands going RLRLRL then A#maj7 (246864 246864) LRLRLR . To maintain a RL pattern on the left side of the handpan makes my hands get in the way of each other and it's more ergonomic to change the leading hand. This is difficult at first but I'm getting used to it. I feel like there are lots of instances where you need to swap your leading hand and I'm wondering if you recommend learning this or not?
