How to get the effortlessly "lived-in" personal home 

Jenny Bourn (here on RU-vid) is a good example of this lived-in quality you’re talking about. She recently did a video about her home decor ethos and she refers to it as a “beautiful mess” or “mess respectfully” that contributes to this feeling of effortlessness that is reflective of a person’s real world.

Totally agree that it takes time to get that lived in style - some people seem to desperately want to skip that time part and are obsessed to have such a lived in style home (or in an similar way also a curated wardrobe) right away even at a very young age. But you can’t fake time. The process of curating your home and your wardrobe will never be finished especially for people who are into style. But for everyone life changes all the time and will create need for rearranging and revisiting current solutions.

This is totally how I have built up my home style. An eclectic mix of collected objects from travel, art from local artists and family sentimental items. It just makes my home feel comfortable and happy and just so me. Thanks for your great tips and insights! Love your videos.

I think part of this effect is having furniture/storage/functional elements of the home that both are unique and intentionally chosen AND are clearly being _maximally_ used in a non-staged way. So it reflects that the home is not immune to clutter, but that it has been designed and adapted to contain the clutter that arises with the daily life of the home owner in an intentional way. For example, an entryway that has a unique shoe rack that has enough space for all the shoes to be stuffed in, a unique coat rack or hooks to hang as many coats and bags haphazardly as possible, a worn in runner that fits the dimensions of the floor perfectly, a shelf with a fun tray to put keys and things, and houses other unique knick-knacks that are collected over time. Another aspect is what you already mentioned which I think people really take for granted, which is that this aesthetic really is the product of time and of being lived in. Figuring out the patterns of activity, figuring out what exact placement of art is best, collecting items over time and having enough to group together, etc. Not really thinking about where exactly everything is placed on each shelf, rather letting the arrangement settle over time.

This is the approach that works for me. I hate the overly styled trendy aesthetics I see. I think it is a shortcut for people who don’t have an eye for design, don’t have the time, or feel comfortable fully leaning into a look. But to me that always gets stale and looks too forced. All of my former design mistakes have been because I rushed. Even with my wardrobe this is true. I spent way too much on clothes trying to achieve a look that didn’t my lifestyle and just filling in holes. Now that I approach my wardrobe and interiors with a slower, more practical, and thoughtful manner it’s more satisfying and less wasteful.

Good Info! It does take time and there's no getting around that and it is not effortless as you stated. It takes years and the most important thing is to buy what you love and it will work over time and curation. It can take thirty years to build so enjoy the wonderful ride. There is one area that I see in your photo examples that is common in many of these homes and that is in many of these interior spaces there are some very high end vintage design furnishings like Bertoia Diamond chairs and other masterpieces of design that are expensive, but the trick is to spend on what is classic and get those foundation pieces that really set the stage of adding treasured objects that may have very little monetary value but you just love like art, books and accessories. There is so much out there with art and the more eclectic mix the better is my thought on that. I'm a painter and I have none of my work hanging in my own home. It all gets sold through art dealers for others homes. I buy others art that inspires me and brings me joy. You can have very expensive art and thrifted art mixed. The main thing is to be true to yourself and really become tuned into what makes you feel that deep connection to an object. The other thing that happens over time is you'll start to curate by eliminating things if there's too much clutter. We can't show everything at one time, but that's the fun and lifelong journey of collecting.

I feel like a lot of interior design that actually feels "lived-in" or "warm" is a matter of "can you hear the music". Some people could get multiple degrees in interior design and architecture, but still only be capable of creating cold, lifeless homes.

A question that popped into my mind, if interior design should take time - are interior designers obsolete? Like the ones that design a new home from scratch when working with a client! 😅

A video I would love to see is how to make recycling look good lol, I always have pet bottles, cardboard boxes and plastic packaging I need to store untill I can be bothered to take it to a recycling station, any way to make this look nice in my kitchen
