Learn to setup your Axis Longboard double pedal settings with these tips and tricks!
After having the axis a longboards for over 3 years, I've learned quite a bit in regards to setting them up properly, especially if you're looking to learn how to efficiently play the heel toe technique on your double pedals.
In this video you're going to learn:
- How and why you should be using spring tension to your advantage
- VDL (Variable Drive Lever) settings for heel toe and ankle technique
- An axis driveshaft hack (old version) to prevent drive slippage
- Bass Drum Beaters choice and positioning
- Bass Drum batter head tension and the reasoning behind it
- and so much more!
About Cameron Fleury:
Having taught drums privately for over a decade, he has decided to share his knowledge of drumming and drum education online with the world. Cameron is a professional musician from Canada but that hasn't stopped him from touring internationally with major label bands: Terrorhorse, Betraying The Martyrs, Baptized In Blood. From his home studio Cameron makes the remote drum recording process easy for metal artists and producers around the globe. Cameron looks to inspire more drummers and musicians to love playing their instruments and music.

VDL is more of a power/responsiveness setup, rather than hight. By pushing the VDL up, you increase the lever and you get more power. Foot board travel is increased, which makes pedal feel slower and less responsive. VDL down does the opposite, so you get short foot board travel, quick response, but lover volume. It naturally changes the foot pedal board hight, but since that’s not its point, they also sell hight adjusters, that you can screw in between foot board and lever.

U should also talk about bass drum head tension relative to your pedal settings!

Could you tell me more about what you mean?
@Thefractalillusion
@Thefractalillusion 2 года назад
How tight or loose do you tune your head to accent the tension/action from your springs.
@bsrob1
@bsrob1 2 года назад
@@CameronFleury I over complicated the question sorry. I mean how do you tune your kick drum overall? Tight , loose, or medium tension? I use to tune my kicks for sound but could never get a good feel on them for playing fast, they would sound good on the mic’s (no triggers) but I lacked the speed and feeI wanted. So I tried the opposite, I tuned my batter heads tight and muffled the kick more and found that I could play faster on them and run less spring tension on my pedals because I had more rebound from the kick drum being tighter. Thank u for your reply too! Love your videos! So yes how do you tune and muffle your kick drum and why? I’ve seen extreme metal drummers like Derek roddy or George kollias always run their springs on their pedals as tight as possible and loose tension on the batter head. Obviously it’s personal preference but I just wonder the thought processes that go into choosing those settings between pedals and head tension.
@bsrob1
@bsrob1 2 года назад
@@CameronFleury one other thing to add and I apologize for writing small novels but… the muffling … I’ve noticed a lot of fast drummers who run exclusively triggers will stuff their bass drum full of blankets or have a pillow laying/covering the whole surface of the batter head. Do u think this is for more control of the triggered sound or for better feel/response of the kick drum as they may be running a tight tension on it? I see u kinda have a lot of blanket laying against the head but not as much as some , which is why I ask. Thanks again!
@CameronFleury
@CameronFleury 2 года назад
Hey man! Towards the end of the video I go over the kick drum heads tension. The reason why the kick drum is stuffed with blankets is for accuracy when acoustically triggering the kick drum. Helps with misfires! Hopefully that helps \M/

Love the tshirt! I read Goosebumps as a kid. Just rebuilt my original collection. Say Cheese and Die was a fun episode on TV too! Thanks for the video. Been meaning to try and figure why my DW pedals seem off. I think it's related to the ball bearings though.

@@CameronFleury awesome. I'm not sure what my favorite would be. It did help. Granted my DW 8000 pedals are a bit different than your Axis pedals but the big takeaway for me was micro adjusting my left and right pedals as needed.
@CameronFleury
@CameronFleury 2 года назад
There are so many different ways to achieve results. Best bet is to find what works best for you. It's easy (as you know) to get lost in all of the little details, and it's very distracting to practice time and actually having fun playing the drums.
@drummingninja1065
@drummingninja1065 2 года назад
@@CameronFleury absolutely. I do think my left pedal has more tension than my right though. And because I'm right foot dominant and lead, i don't notice it. But i also worry if I tweak them make them match, it'll make my double bass playing worse lol. Update: i cleaned the bearings that hold my springs. Got a ton of gunk off and got some of the little balls to move inside. So they aren't seized anymore. But now my left pedal is way less responsive than my right. If I push both beaters against my bass drum batter head then release by hand, both will swing together for maybe two movements then my right one keeps going several times. Spring tension is pretty close for both pedals but they feel very different! If anyone can help out, that'd be awesome.

Is there an add on vdl function for the normal longboards? Also, I'm having trouble getting the left pedal to follow my foot when doing double strokes. It feels way heavier to push (due to the added weight of the driveshaft as you mentioned) than my left pedal, which does the double stroke effortlessly. So to compensate i maxed out the spring tension for the left pedal which is located beside the right tension spring located on the right pedal (i dont seem to have a tension spring located on the left pedal for some reason). Im all out of ideas for getting the left pedal to feel as effortless as the right one. Thanks man.
@dorianrustik6880
@dorianrustik6880 10 месяцев назад
You gotta add a bit more tension on the slave pedal since there's gonna be a lil bit of loss on the connectors. Just a couple of turns should do the trick.

I have a Gibraltar direct drive double pedal and it's just awful. I mean no rebound especially slave pedal. I love my axis A2s. Great rebound on slave pedal. Ordered those danmar beaters. Weight can certainly help for more rebound but sometimes when I play single pedal, I get extra trigger beats by accident and I think my pedal springs are too loose.

Is this microtune spring really worth it? Can you use higher tensions than in the usual assembly? Im considering buying it but I dont know if they will make much of a difference.

Don't have any experience with the usual assembly. The micro tune seems that much more intuitive and easily adjustable. Sheer convenience really.

I noticed you have your spring is on the left pedal instead of attached to the right one like mine. Did you do that intentionally after you bought the pedals? Or did you bug 2 singles then convert them? Reason I ask is because I’m having a hard time getting even beater swings. Thinking maybe I can swap the spring over to the left pedal and it might help with that?

@CameronFleury

It's worth trying to lower your spring tension to see how your feet and pedals react. Again, everyone is different, so you'll need to adjust then take a short video clip, and then adjust again until the pedal movement is fluid with your feet.
