Practicing to a metronome and practicing at speeds just outside your comfort zone is sooooooo important man. I remember being stuck 150-165 bpm until I started doin small bursts at 170, felt all the muscles tightening up and burning. Then after awhile you gain the strength to control that speed and you repeat. Doesn’t happen fast but that’s how you do it!

any tips for switching from full leg motion to ankles? it throws everything off when I try to go to ankles.
@bladelazoe
@bladelazoe 2 года назад
@@insertmetalusernamehere I ran into the problem too, the the thing with ankle motion is you can't do it at slow speeds as it naturally wants to go fast. Practice the ankle motion in the 150-165 range. Just get used to the 'bounce' motion if you will. It took me quite awhile to get used to the motion in order to control it. Do small bursts at first, like maybe 3's or 4's or 5's. Then gradually try to extend that so your playing just a little bit longer. Another one you could do, practice going from 8th notes to 16th bursts then back to 8th notes again but do that exercise for 3-5 mins. The switch from leg to ankle motion, at least when learning it is very frustrating at first. But you'll get the hang of it eventually.

Samus, you are an indispensable WEALTH of drum knowledge, skill, feel, approach, (add more here), to the WORLD drumming community. I’m not going to sob story and all, but I was a drummer from age 12 to about 10 years ago, age 33. Metal and Jazz by the end of my playing, go figure it was those two styles right?! Anyway, I was born with a neurological disorder that of course progresses as I age. And at first it was just severe pain in my spine, like the whole spine not just my low back or tailbone from a shitty throne. That progressed into limb dysfunction, arms and legs (which ended my drumming) then into losing my hand dexterity (which ended my art career). Long story long, I basically lost my ability physically (not mentally) to continue my arts and career. Which were teaching art and drumming. Now I’m locked in a battle with the state since 2017 suing them for wrongful denial of assistance because the paralysis, by itself, should have qualified me for disability assistance. So I literally vicariously live through the artists I follow and admire. And being a drummer and teacher and metal as fu_k, you are quite the continuing bright spot in the arts that have faded out in my life and I needed to say thank you. Being unable financially to become a member of yours, I didn’t know if you’d see this or whatever, but Goddamnit I’m still putting this out there! So Samus, Thank You for just being you and sharing it with the world. You help cheer me up and it is apparent you do so for a lot of people. You are an amazing artist, and one of my favorite drummers of all time. PS, as soon as my attorneys and I successfully sue the state and I do win my case appeal judgment and I start getting disability assistance, I WILL be becoming a paying member of yours. Thanks Again! j

The over practice one is the most important. Was practicing every day at some point and at reached a phase where i was starting to lose speed and shit and that fucked me up. Recently due to school and other things that have occured i have been at a very bad mental state and hadn't played for like a month or so. Sat behind the kit for the first time in a month and god fucking damn i managed to play lucifer incestus, once upon the cross, some morbid angel songs and in general *fast as fuck shit* i used to not be able to even touch. Take breaks, long ones if needed, its very beneficial.

I can't overstate what a huge game changer working on my weak side was lately. I'm still at the beginning but it improved *everything* , consistency, tightness, speed. I literally feel a change in my body and how I perceive it, as my weak left side gets stronger and more confident. Weird experience. I spend at least a quarter of practice on just improvising grooves, leading with the weak side, doing everything that feels wrong until it starts to feel right. Rudiments also helped immensely with both hands and feet.

If I may add another tip: write out your drumpatterns in notes. Write each foot/bass drum as a separate instrument, this will give you some insights into what foot should play which notes. Especially if you've played with a single bass drum and only one pedal, as then you are used to having the right foot do the off-beat hits as well. Writing some patterns out will help you see when each individual foot should be playing (usually right on-beat and left off-beat) and should help out spreading the work load between both feet, making the difference in control between them smaller too. No need to write entire songs, just some parts or specific patterns should do the trick.

@chewtoy1107
@chewtoy1107 Год назад
@@keithbarnes9419 actually imo at least i find alternating every hit potentially better practice than only alternating for fast stuff, but it just kinda depends. I do feel like I wish I had started that earlier though, as if you get used to only alternating bass drums for fast stuff, it gets harder imo to play certain polyrhythms and rudiments and such So I'd say you're good/ on the right track. But again it just kinda depends. Do what makes sense for the beat/song
@fuge511
@fuge511 Год назад
@@keithbarnes9419 its ok to alternate 8th notes when starting out. the eveness between left and right foot needs to be developed... but at somepoint you must play 16th notes and higher subdivisions, which will requre more speed from each indivual foot. so having good 8th notes with one foot will be important.. but it depends on your drum progress

I think a really good song to practice getting used double bass is the intro to Dream Theater-Under a Glass Moon. It’s fairly slow and only uses 4 16th notes. It gets you used to bringing the left foot in and out and if you aren’t the best at double bass you don’t have to worry about fast 16th note runs. Just getting a solid group of 4 16ths

I started drumming two years ago and just upgraded to an Alesis surge kit and this is my first time having to actually utilize a real quick as opposed to the pedal that was super sensitive. These fundamentals such as foot placement really help.

That combo of feet and hands at 13:24 had a psychedelic effect on my mind, it looks completely insane on a big screen. A great testament to how CONSISTENT you are. And that's why you're a great teacher, I can not stand when the beat is off and no one acknowledges it, it grinds my brain. But when you don't overstep your abilites I can really take in what you say and believe in it. Been looking for a video on doubles that I can take in for all my life, today I finally found it. Thank you! You reignited my creative flame!

I replaced the springs on my iron cobras with really thick ones from the hardware store once.. Helped with the speed, but there was a little bounce back on the single kick parts. A wise drumming master you are Samus!!!
