Listen, we all know he can only mimic sound tones because he isn't Billy Corgan and as any musician knows 95% of the sound is that particular persons MAGIC touch the rest is gear. In this instance Billy Corgans tone was his main focus. He was trying to demonstrate that general sound of the Smashing Pumpkins and on a level that an average musician can afford and get. I can tell they took time to make sure they selected gear that most average musicians can possibly afford and obtain easily. I think this was one of the best vids like this I've personally watched. Sam did an EXCELLENT job playing and explaining things and I think captured the general vibe of the Pumpkins sound particularly the 90's tone. Great job guys!

I would say it's more from the studio. Endless overdubs and effects. You can get pretty close with a JCM900, Strat and a Big Muff OP Amp but the rest is all Studio "trickerie".

No, tone is about gear. Touch won’t add fuzz, delay etc. Tone is about timbre, not your overall sound or what you play.

Such a great video. For all you "well, this is not quite right because in fact Billy used KT-88 valves on his JCM800, 2 Big Muffs, Nike trainers for Gish and Doc Marten boots after, lace sensors instead of Strat single coils etc etc", this is a general approach to their sound that the average player can get to without too many mods or too much money. And what a great video it is. This is why you can't have nice things

@jaecenwhite2590
@jaecenwhite2590 4 года назад
On Cherub Rock mix in a track of a cranked barefoot JCM800 and you’ll be there. If you listen to the track there’s a lot of noise outside of the big muff range. Also I think Billy uses a small stone. One trick I’ve used for a live sound is a stereo chorus with two different amps and two different big muffs. It adds some of that double track thickness.. but really the whole key is as much gain as possible.

Good basic rundown. Obviously, as others have stated here in the comments section....there are a few flaws in these demos, and some bits of misinformation here and there, but if you're looking for that sound, this vid will get you most of the way there. I will say, if you can't get your hands on an original op-amp Muff, the reissue featured here is great. I've had a few BMs over the years, and this one is the most "Pumpkin-y"

Couldn't agree with you more @Rock & Roll Music Man. Anyone could be super critical of this, but it is a path, and that's all! So many try to "replicate" instead of create. The ONLY thing I would have added to this to get someone started is a boost of sorts. Corgan used the MXR Distortion ii with the Muff for many of his leads on SD and MCIS. Obviously these aren't around but there are alternatives. Other than missing out on throwing in a boost, this was fantastic. Thanks!

Been wanting to get this sound on some things I want to write so this is useful. Have to have a strat fender type guitar and Gibson ES-335 type hollow body and tons of phaser/fuzz pedals. Doing this on a budget is quite a difficult challenge as Corgan has hundreds of pedals! Marshall JCM 800 is a great amp- so many classic rock and metal bands used it from Corgan to Slayer to Megadeth.
@richardjblackman
@richardjblackman 3 года назад
you're gonna get a bit closer (to siamese dream tone) if you use a strat with lace sensors and use the neck pickup (main reason things sound wrong on this). also no big muff on gish. everything on the JCM800 was dimed and attenuated. good call on the op amp big muff.. took me a long time to understand why my old russian muff didn't sound right. you can also add a fender blender (or copy)

I’ve always wondered how they did the constant electric guitar sound, like the opening riff around the one minute mark in Mayonnaise. It’s a fascinating sound. I think the presenter is saying it was layers and layers of guitar that harmonized into 1 smooth sound?
@TheMattmatic

Some songs on Siamese Dream had over 50 guitar overdubs I think. Mayonaise was also played with a broken guitar that made a wailing feedback sound when you just let it go (”When I can - wEEEEEE” - THAT sound)

Phaser/Reverb/Chorus pedals of your choice when needed to fake the multitracking. Octave pedal for the few songs that actually DO use it. (Rocket comes to mind here)
