It was a great video, Matt. Thanks for sharing it. As a perfectionist myself, I'm sorry to point out a flaw, but at 7:44 you say "37% better", where as it should be either "37 times better"* or "3,600% better". Small tweak to get to that 100% perfect. 😉 *Thanks for correcting me, Gabriel.

Perfectionism has helped me when it pushed me to do more, and has hurt me when it held me back from doing anything at all. My current mantra: "This is good enough for now, I can come back and be perfect later." Saves me so much time when doing video edits, and most of the time I come back and realize my first try was actually pretty good. Great video topic!

Honestly, I think this was more helpful to hear than the video. I love Matt's work, but when any work you make still doesn't feel 90% good enough, it's tough to get even halfway there. However, viewing everything as a ROUGH rough draft to refine later might be more my speed.

"if i'm not aiming for perfection then what the hell am I working towards?" This really hit me because unconsciously that's what I'm focused on, and I'm paralyzed because of it. Perfectionism really plagued my life. I want to stop this thinking and shift my attention to getting it done rather than perfect like you said. Thanks a lot for the video, it was super helpful!

From a recovering perfectionist, this clip was fantastic. It reminded me of the time I made a wedding cake for my son and the middle of the cake had sunk. we just covered it up with more icing. Yes, people did comment on how there was more icing in the middle of the cake 😂 and when one of my family members said something, I replied to her that good enough was good enough. That was when she turned around and told me it was the yummiest wedding cake that she had ever tasted. 😊

Wise perfectionism. Setting realistic goals, so we don't fall into the trap of repeatedly setting high goals and them beating ourselves up. Let perfectionism be the action of "doing" rather than the idea of "meeting goals." This way, we have a blast whether we both finish our projects and lessen the judgmental thoughts that we have relating to the project.

I love that you look at perfectionism as a strength, and finding the balance between progress and perfection. I'm definitely a recovering procrastinating perfectionist and have found great value in finding a "good enough" place for my work. I do allow myself to revisit things that I cannot get off my mind, but most of the time, I leave it be.

I thought this was going to be about a different thing, but I really enjoyed this and I'm going to try to adapt this. I thought you were going to say when you aim for habits, you aim to complete them 90% of the time. I saw someone say this on Reddit, and I adapted it but found 90% to be too much. Instead, I found 75% is the sweet spot. Which means if you have a daily habit you can miss 91 days, which sounds insane, because it's three months worth of days. But it's really not. Because what about when you're sick, Or work makes you stay longer, or you want to go on vacation, etc. Completing goals 75% of the time ism ore than 95% of people Off course that means you have to adjust your goals to reflect not hitting them 100% of the time. So if you set a calorie limit to hit daily, your weight loss goal for the year should reflect that you'll only hit that limit 75% of the time. I wrote this out in case anyone would find this valuable. As a perfectionist, when I missed a day of meditation, or exercise, etc my mental would crumble. Setting 75% really allowed me to have peace of mind. Because even the two day rule Matt does isn't realistic, in my opinion. What if you have the flu? What if a close relative passes away, or what if you have a weekend trip? Now we may say "of course the two day rule doesn't follow here," but us perfectionists know that's a trap. We'll say "well why are those days exceptions and not others, etc." So knowing you have 91 days you can miss, or 78 days for 6 day a week habits or 65 days for 5 days a week, etc. pushes you towards your goals and also gives you peace of mind. Because imagine if you completed healthy habits 75% of time, you'd make great progress by the end. Also to clarify, off days don't count. So when I say a five day a week habit, that means you get to miss 75% of those five days that you're supposed to do your habit. Hope this helped fellow perfectionists!

Thank you! As a perfectionist I really needed to hear this. Two years ago I learned that I love to read audiobooks that I like (science fiction), even though they are fiction I wouldn’t read otherwise, so it was something I would do for fun. Last year, I also found joy in reading paper books. And I didn’t have any pressure on myself because ‘I was not a reader’, so I didn’t need to accomplish anything. Since I read quite a few books, a lot to be me, I set a goal this year, one book a month (or if I had a busy month, 12 books this year). Jan and feb went great, when march came I started skipping days and quickly realized I wouldn’t be able to finish the book at the end of the month, so I stopped completely… I still listen to audiobooks because that is easier, but I still drown myself in guilt because I don’t read paper books as often, maybe once a week… But in a week I will get MANY new books on my birthday, because that’s basically all I’ve asked for, and I will not pressure myself anymore, I will read for fun, to dive into a different reality, and that’s what I love, so I shouldn’t let perfectionism stop me! 🙌🏼🙌🏼

Wow. I came here through Luc Forsyth channel, but this is super helpful and inspiring. Thank you Matt for sharing. I am a filmmaker and often find myself procrastinating - striving to do the best and very seldom publishing my work - kind of saving it in back drawer - hoping one day - comes and I will become famous or successful. I am learning to find ways to overcome my perfectionistic tendencies and just do the work and share it without fear. Thanks for helping along the way.

After some me search. One of the reasons I procrastinate is because I am some kind of perfectionist. But being one has made me a really good learner. When I eventually start learning something, whether it's for a hobby or for school, or start a project I pour so much into them. At some point I get really skilled at many things and impress many people with my project. So I think embracing my "perfectionism" but also leaving somethings "unfinished" from time to time is the right way for me. Thank you for sharing your thoughts and experience on this, Matt!

Thank you so much for showing compassion towards the urge to strive for perfection. I find your video very helpful to any discussion about perfectionism and the relationship with the idea of perfection. I like to think about it like a plant reaching for the sun in order to grow and prosper. Sure it will never actually reach the sun, but opening up and facing the sun allows it to absorb light and transform it into something the plant can live from. And there is a competition amongst plants growing near eachother over their spot in the sunlight because it's such a useful source of energy.

This video came at the “perfect” time for me! I’m currently striving to wrap up the final steps in the production of my Debut Solo Album. 🎶 Starting the project was the hardest part. I made an ambitious deadline goal which I’ve already well surpassed. Still, it’s good I made the goal because it really kickstarted the creation of a lot of music that I simply would not have created otherwise. It was ordinate that I extend my goal. However, after passing the point of diminishing returns, I’ve realized that it’s time to do the second most difficult part of this whole adventure: finish it despite it’s imperfections. I’m really hoping that I can look back at this comment in a couple months with a release that I’m proud of. 🤞

Maladaptive perfectionism gets a lot of people, including myself. Want things to work out, want it done right, want to be good at whatever I try. It's not always realistic and it occasionally stops me from taking further action on things. It could stop me from starting on things as well. Aiming for effort doesn't occasionally work either but hopefully it can change to where effort does pay off. Thank you for an incredible video!

Glad to see someone here mention about a bit more background story about Richard and The Thief and the Cobbler. As an animator myself, our profession is kind of cursed and blessed by perfectionism. Clinging on to the detail that nobody's seems to care are actually the foundation of the art of animation. It takes years to finish a good piece in general which in most of case will be consider " taking too long and is it worth it? " plus the production was often cut short by publishing team and investor to restricted the artist's truth ambition and vision. It's bit like building a cathedrals, Sagrada Família is still been under construction after100 years, such epic project will not be thinkable in modern days, maybe that's why now we no longer have architecture like the pyramid and cathedrals. In most of professional animator's eyes, the achievement and artistic level of The Thief and the Cobbler is way WAY higher than Aladdin, in a way Aladdin was a stolen idea and made fast to beat the original. So does it mean whoever finish the product first is the winner? Is it always ethical? It's very debateable. Till today, there're still a group of animators working on this project to make it the way Richard intended it be. It is a project that NEED this much time and I truly believe, without perfectionism vision of Richard this will not become one of the most amazing traditional animated piece in the history. Unfortunately however much I agree with we need to let go of our perfectionism, The Thief and the Cobbler might not be the best example in this scenario. Great video btw, as always, thank you Matt for your hard work!
